5Best tv you can buy right now
By Anthony Campo
In my opinion, this tv is the best to be had at this time. To provide some background for that opinion, I have tried the following sets while I still had my Kuro 5020: The VT30, D7000 and the 80" Sharp 632U LED. The Sharp was something I had to try based on some reviews but it really was quite disappointing and never even made it onto the wall. For further information regarding my opinion of the Sharp, please read the comments section where I have answered a question regarding my expereince with this set. The VT30 was quite good but had color issues, uniformity issues and large bezel syndrome. The D7000 was far better than I had expected after reading the nasty comments about it. But none of these sets allowed me to feel good about sending my 9g Kuro packing. With much anticipation, I ordered the 65VT50 from Amazon. The entire process was painless and quick as per usual. Delivery was sooner than expected and professional. They did send only one driver, so be prepared for that. But we managed just fine. I quickly inspected the set and immediately mounted it and got things setup. Everything went smoothly.I did download and install an available update. The only new "feature" I noticed after the update was a fairly long duration banner at TV startup. This is defeatable within the settings, so fear not.**** A second update had been released and is mentioned at the end of this review.****** 09/28/2012 update #3 version 1.17 is out. This may effect a calibrationNow for my impression of this television. This VT50 is simply beautiful. The smaller bezel and overall aesthetics are quite excellent. Gone are the days of "but LCD's are so much slimmer and/or less bulky". This set looks great turned off. I am happy to pay a premium for the single sheet of glass design even if that was the only difference over the GT, but its not. Some complain about the silver trim, but you will be hard pressed to find an owner that does not like it. Personaly, I really like the look. I think the TV would look rather run of the mill and boring without it.The touchpad was easy to pair with the television. I do not imagine myself using the touch pad much, but it does work as advertised. If you use your television to browse at all, you may find the touchpad quite useful. I had no issues navigating with it at all.It is also worth mentioning that this set is also quite a bit lighter than the VT30.To my eye, the blacks are right there with the Kuro I just sold. A meter may say otherwise but it takes a trained eye to see the difference if not side by side. The blacks are inky and satisfying and do not leave me wanting in any way. My eyes are pretty damn good and all I can say is that I do not miss my Kuro one single bit. And the extra real estate is quite nice as well.Equally as impressive is the increased brightness of this panel. If you find that you are really drawn to the brightness of an LCD, but prefer the motion of a plasma, this set should fit your bill perfectly. I have two large windows in my living room and never feel like I need more out of my set in terms of brightness. The anti-glare works excellent as well.If I was forced to come up with a gripe, it would be the red LED that comes on when the set is on. This was poor planning on Panasonics part but I am not losing any sleep over it. A little well trimmed piece of electrical tape takes care of that if it really bothers you.Everything works as it should. HDMI control works perfectly on mine. I can hit the power button once on my Directv remote and everything turns on as it should (STB, TV, and AVR). ARC (Audio Return Channel) is also nice. This allows the audio from the TV to play through your home stereo while utilizing the same HDMI cable that feeds it content. To utilize this feature, you will need to plug your HDMI cable into HDMI #2 on the television. This is great for when you are watching Netflix or something emanating from the TV itself. All this functionality is assuming that you have an AVR that is up to date and HDMI 1.4a compliant as well as your HDMI cables. I use these cables Mediabridge Ultra Series - High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet - (6 Feet) - Category 2 Certified - Supports 3D & Audio Return Channel [Latest HDMI Version Available]. They have worked perfectly for me every single time and the price is nice. I still feel compelled to interupt when I see an employee at a Big Box store trying to convince an unknowing person to spend over $100 on a Monster cable. You will notice that the HDMI ports are extremely close to the edge of the set. If you have rigid cables, it can present a problem and possibly cause them to protrude past the edge. There are several fixes for this. The one I chose was to use two of these connectors Cable Matters Gold Plated HDMI Male to HDMI Female 270 Degree Adapter. Together they create a 180 degree bend to allow your cables to be neatly installed.Bluetooth is a great feature that this TV has. I can place my receiver in standby (bypass mode) and listen to TV at night with my wireless blutooth headset. I will take a quick moment to endorse this headset LG Tone - HBS-700 Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Headset - Retail Packaging - Black/Orange. They work flawlessly on everyting I throw at them from working out, talking on the phone while driving to listening to a TV show while eating a midnight snack. They are ultra comfortable and sound excellent. At any rate, I am unsure why this feature gets such little attention. But keep in mind that you do need to verify that your AVR will pass through sound via HDMI or there will be no sound at all when the AVR is off or in standby mode. This is assuming that you pass your content through a receiver. You can't fault the tv if no sound is getting to it.I have had many high end TVs over the years but this one takes the cake for me as an overall package. No offence to anyone intended, but you could not pay me to place an LED TV in my living room. Sure the Sharp Elite looks great head on, but try going off to an angle, and not even an extreme angle and watch the PQ fall off a cliff. Looking at a plasma from any angle is like looking through a window. Not to mention that motion is far more natural looking on plasma in general. As far as sound is concerned, I personally place very little time in this area. Many people may use the built in speakers for night viewing. I would say that these speakers are quite capable for that purpose. If you are looking for this TV to have a capable 24/7 sound system, then you will probably be let down with this and pretty much any other flat screen offering. If you are going to lay down the funds for this beauty, you should also be ready to invest in a descent sound system if you do not already have one.*** Amended 3D glasses info.Considering how passionate some folks seem to be about the exclusion of 3D glasses, I will only say this: This set does not come with 3D glasses. I am fine with that. You may not be.Now lets talk about breaking in your plasma and some of the myths that go along with that. Many people will religiously use what are called break-in slides for the first 100 hours that they own the television. There are good reasons for this and there are misguided reasons as well. These slides are full screen color slides that you would run at 100 contrast for 100 hours as a slide show. This allows the phosphors to age evenly in there more fragile and impressionable state that is the first 100-200 hours. Now it is just as reasonable to simply watch mixed content for the first 100 hours instead of using slides. You just want to be sure to avoid letter box material or leaving stations on with static logos for long periods of times. The only downside of using content instead of slides is if you plan on using offered calibrated settings from someone like D-Nice on AVS. He has been kind enough in the past to offer calibrated settings to folks in an attempt to help out the community. He will break-in a set with the slides and then calibrate it. He will then post these settings for others to get at least close to a calibrated look. The best way to mimic his results is to break-in your set with the slides as he did. He will also be the first to tell you that panels vary and you may or may not benefit from his offered settings. If you do not use the slides as he did, then you will have less of a chance of benefiting from his settings because the panel will have been aged on a far less consistent scale. At this point in time, D-Nice has not posted settings for this particualr set. So keep this in mind, as there are questions as to whether or not he will at all.Personally, I am not using slides anymore other than for use to inspect my panel for problems. Nobody wants to have a brand new set off limits for 4 days. I know I don't. This time round, I have not used slides and all is well in the world. If I want to get the set calibrated, I will.Running slides in the hopes of matching the exact characteristics of someone elses panel is a gamble that may or may not pay off, and how would you really know if you were getting the most out of these "Free" settings without meters and training to tell you? But, it is fair to say that you will have the least chance for any type of IR in the first 100+ hours by running the slides. There are no logos or bars or HUDs to worry about. I stress the point that they will not CAUSE IR but they will not help remove it. So it is a personal choice and there is most definately no reason not to run the slides other than it makes the set unavailable for 4 days.As a side note, these slides are excellent tools to inspect your new screen for issues such as dead or stuck pixels, micro cracks in the glass and hot spots or uniformity issues. The trick here is to use this tool when you get your set and then leave it alone. If you constantly use these slides to look for issues, you will eventually find one and it will drive you crazy. And in most cases it will end up being something that you will never see while viewing normal content.Slides can be downloaded by searching for "Plasma Break-In DVD Images" . Just select the "Plasma Break-In DVD Images" link. Once downloaded, unzip and place on thumb drive. So there you have it regarding break-in. Use slides or mixed content for the first 100 hours or so and relax. One more thing worth mentioning to those that are unaware. The picture on your set will continue to improve over the first 300+ hours. So please do not base your impression of the set on the picture that comes out of the box. Blacks settle in a touch lower and the picture quality in general will become a bit richer and vibrant.Another common misconception is that slides should be used to help remove IR or image retention. This is simply not the case. Here is an excerpt of something I wrote on AVS:You will never be told to use slides to remove IR. Breakin slides are for breaking in the panel, period. Think about it this way. If you look at your IR while running the slides, you will see that the IR is flashing exactly the same each time. You are simply baking the IR in as far as I am concerned. You are maintaining that exact image over and over again. Now start a pixel flipper or mixed content for that matter. In this case, every pixel involved within the area of the IR is being given it own unique workout independent from the surrounding pixels. This random aging of the pixels will allow the offending pixels involved within the area of IR to hopefully slowly blend in better with the surrounding pixels.Sure, there is an anti-retention tool that is built into the sets software, but do not let that fool you into a false sense of security. If you leave on a station with a static logo for two days straight, the tool will do no more than make the edges of the logo image blurry rather than defined.I should also mention that I have had no hint of IR on my set to date (besides on slides). This is after days of watching Discovery channel who is one of the worst offenders of the infamous logo. They should be sued with other channels that wreak havoc on plasmas with these logos. I almost have to think they have stock in LED technology! lolSettings: The following are the settings that I am currently using post Luminance patch. They are a combination of my own and others. I feel I have struck a very nice balance without having had an actual calibration performed. This is in no way intended or claimed to be professional calibrated settings. I would be happy if they work for you though. So it definitely does not hurt to give them a try. If you find colors to be off on your particular panel, simply disregard the Pro settings and only use the Basic settings.Picture Mode: CustomContrast: 82 "Bright Room" Setting 98Brightness: 52-54 "Bright Room" Setting 70Color: 50Tint: 0Sharpness: 14-24 *If you have an external VP you may want this at zeroColor Temp: Warm 2 (or Warm 1) * Warm 1 will not be as accurate, but you may prefer it anyway as it will spruce up the whites a touch.Cats: OffVideo NR: OffAspect adjustments submenuScreen format: FullHD size: Size 2 (Size 1 will perform a 95% overscan. All plasmas buzz....period. It is an inherent aspect of the technology. A perfect way to hear how this buzzing is effected by what is on the screen is by using the slides we talked about. Typically, the buzzing will be loudest on an all white or very bright screen. As you flip through the different colored slides, you will notice the buzzing changing in its intensity. Now some sets will obviously buzz more than others. You may have two identical sets that are side by side and one may be louder than the other. So if you have a set that you feel buzzes too much for you, an exchange may be in order. But be ready for no change, less noise and possibly more noise. But please do not base your impression while you are standing in a silent room with your head behind the TV. Listen to the TV sitting in your normal viewing location with volume at what you would consider "normal" or slightly below that. Then see if you can even hear it at all. Personally, I have to have my volume very low to hear it at all. Under my normal listening conditions, I NEVER hear my set buzz. There are many other factors involved that can contribute to the buzzing. Some of which include proximity of TV to the surrounding walls, room acoustics, sensitive hearing, furniture in the room, carpet, etc.....I hope this information helps you in your decision. I know the feeling of being overwhelmed when you are are trying to make an educated choice amid a sea of conflicting information. When all is said and done, I feel great about my purchase and highly recommend the television.TopperMcFlyUpdate 07/31/2012:Panasonic has released another update. This update resolves the issue with CMS color Luminance not functioning. ;-)Picture settings are reflected and noted above.Update 08/19/2012:In order to put minds at ease, I begrudgingly put the colored slides up after about 750 hours of use to see if I have any IR. I expected to at least see some minor IR but the fact is that I have ZERO IR! If you are worried about IR, stop. Follow my instructions and advice and it will be a non-issue.And btw, my picture quality has steadily improved over the entire 700+ hours it has been running. What a gem.

4Sets the new high bar for home television
By Brandon
Pilot freight services delivered my unit May 8th, 3-days sooner than advertised. While I was apprehensive about set-up, an HDMI (not included) and power cord were all that was needed to start watching programs through my receiver. I'm a big guy, so hefting the TV onto its base wasn't such an ordeal, but I will note that most people will need help with this chore. I opted not to put it on the wall due to its weight and my living room's space restrictions (not to mention the extra price/non-availability of a wall bracket). The pedestal required a Philips screwdriver to construct and does not swivel in the slightest. Upgrading to 65-inches, I don't miss that feature. The viewing experience is as advertised. Out of the box, the VT50 is set very dark. Unless the unit will be placed in a home theater, you will need to use a custom or the "THX Bright Room" setting. At any setting, however, you will note the incredible degree to which blacks are displayed. I tested some modifications while watching a MLB game broadcast in HD. Its difficult to describe the "new" shades of black and grey that I could discern on this set, but I can say that I never saw them before. Every detail that I thought of or tried to see was simply: there. The one sheet of glass addition is gorgeous, though when the TV is on it kind of disappears. Simply put, I've never seen a better looking plasma display.VIERA functionality is running wirelessly and almost seamlessly through my Netgear N900. Every app I've tried (I'm not a subscriber to anything like Netflix, so I don't know how well pay apps function) loads quickly. The on board browser is ever so slightly slower than one on a dated laptop I've got, but every web-page loaded without issue. I found streaming videos from a networked PC not to work unless I ran them from a my X-box 360. I can only assume that this is a codec issue. The speakers are "Meh". At this level of monitor, you better already have standalone speakers running through an amp or your missing out. Form factor-wise, the included speakers and woofer melt into the VT50's body. Frankly, I wouldn't have known they were there had I not read the specs. Additionally, and this probably can be attributed to my Pioneer receiver or an HDMI bug, you cannot listen to the set's speakers and your externals at the same time. The touch-remote is a nice addition, but responsiveness and fine movement leave a little to be desired. It's not a laptop/ipad... er, pad. I've got an android smart phone that quickly synched with the VT50 and functions better during internet browsing. Media transfer from the TV to the phone was a button click away, however, going the other way around has escaped me for the moment. Attempts to "flick" a pic or .mov from my phone all end in a triangle inset with an "!" on the TV. There's probably a work around, but I'm a little disappointed it didn't work out of the box.On the disappointment front, I feel obligated to express mine at the lack of 3D glasses included at purchase. I knew that going in, but never the less, it still stings not to have the ability to test such a significant function of the VT50. At around $3,800 I think I've earned at least one pair. Additionally, don't let some idiot at your local big-box store attempt to sell you last years glasses (not that this happened to me, even though it did). The VT30 & VT50 are incompatible. Finally, I live in Colorado and my front door opens at 6,170 feet-ish. My previous plasma was built in 2003 and did not like this altitude. It ran hot and buzzed incessantly. 15-min of use and you can feel the heat escaping the top of the VT50's rear vents with a wave of your hand. It doesn't heat my living room after being on for an hour or buzz at all like my previous set, but I'll be sure to update this review if anything changes. Panasonic's own tech support sent me an email before I purchased it, ensuring me the all their plasmas were rated to 8,000ft, and a local specialist told me that I'd be safe up to 11,000ft.To be clear: I took a star off my review due to the lack of included glasses at this price. It's like buying a pick-up truck and being told that the lever/toggle switch for your included 4-wheel drive is an extra. Bad marketing Panasonic, bad. Other than that, and the odd Android functionality, I cannot recommend this Plasma any more than if I were to post a picture of me hugging it. The P65VT50 is truly fantastic. While I cannot speak for a comparison between this set an a comparable LED, I would figure the LED to be brighter. But if you do most of your TV watching at night, as I do, I'd stick with the Plasma.

5A triumph in design and image quality
By jordan
My VT50 arrived a little over two weeks ago and I feel that I'm now familiar enough with it to write a review. This review is for the 55" model. The VT50 replaced my 50" G-Series Panasonic plasma from 2010. While I liked it just fine, it was a tiny bit too small, had a bezel that got uglier over time, and suffered from floating blacks, which was very annoying since my primary use of the display is watching Blu-Ray content in the dark. I had been anxiously awaiting the release of the VT50 - so much so, that I ordered one without seeing it first, reasoning to myself that if I didn't like it, then I wouldn't be satisfied with any TV this year. The VT50 arrived. Once unpacked and set up, I marveled at the TV before I even turned it on. Was this TV really made by Panasonic, the company known for being helplessly behind the competition is terms of industrial design? The svelte single sheet of glass design is beautiful. The VT50 takes the design introduced with last year's clunky VT30 and trims it down to perfection. The bezel is much smaller than Samsung's E7/8000 and much more attractive in my opinion. It features a nice silver trim around the edges and a classy stand with a silver/black gradient. I can see how the silver edge might be a problem in a very bright room, but I really like it.But design is secondary, isn't it? Picture quality is why anyone buys a flagship model and the VT50 more than delivers. Panasonic has made major improvements over 2011 models, with a new driving method, redesigned panel, and improved filter. Once initial set-up is done, the TV defaults to standard mode, which looks awful - dull and lifeless with egregious line bleed. Thankfully there's an easy fix - this a THX certified display, and new for 2012 Panasonic includes two separate THX modes for 2D viewing - THX Cinema and THX Bright Room. These modes look great out of the box. THX Cinema is what I mainly watch with, although I sometimes use Bright Room mode, albeit with contrast scaled back to 80. Compared to the THX mode on my last Panasonic, the mode here is much improved and lacks the greenish push that I noticed before. I think rather than try to eyeball it, since I'm not a calibrator, I'm going to leave it in THX mode sans any adjustment and pay someone to calibrate it later this year. Compressed satellite HD actually looks surprisingly great, image processing is top notch here and is good at masking artifacts from less-than-stellar feeds. Definitely better than my old Panny. The picture also has a characteristic that is hard to describe - perhaps "smoother" is the word I'm looking for here; it just looks incredibly natural and effortless in subtle color transitions and gradients. I suppose that can be attributed to Panasonic's claim of improved shades of gradation. The real test, however, was when I turned off the lights and fired up the Blu-Ray player. The home menu on my Sony Blu-Ray player is a light gray, which is great for testing panels for flaws in uniformity. Knowing problems with banding, blobbing, and splotching Panasonic had with last year's model, I nervously inspected every part of the panel. No anomalies to be found, whew. I pressed play and ended up sampling a variety of content, and the VT muscled through all of it with incredible prowess. The black level here is impressive - I've seen a VT30 in the dark and this rightfully trounces it. I've also seen an E8000 in the dark and it can't get quite as dark as the VT. Letterbox bars blend into the bezel. Thanks to the deep, dark blacks the VT50 is blessed with incredible contrast. Images have an abundance of pop and lifelike depth, and recall the tangible realism produced by later-generation Pioneer plasma panels. Motion is natural, cinematic, and artifact-free when the 4:4 pulldown 96Hz mode is engaged. I do not notice any flicker either. It should also be noted that I have watched enough on it to verify that the image is rock-solid - no floating blacks, fluctuating brightness, no distractions. Just a beautifully rendered, film-like image that pulls you in.3D performance: Using THX Cinema 3D mode, the 3D image looks great. This is the first 3D TV I've owned but I've seen plenty of 3D on other flat panels and some projectors. 96Hz is unavailable here. Great sense of depth and minimal crosstalk, although I do notice some in higher contrast scenes. This can be somewhat remedied by switching from 60 to 48Hz mode, but it introduces some annoying flicker. I tested using Blu-Ray content like Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D, Hugo, Tron:Legacy, Arabia 3D, and the Adventures of Tintin 3D. 2D>3D conversion is still unimpressive, even after making 3D adjustments, but I suppose it's not too bad considering the display is doing the conversion on the fly. Not a big deal. Please note that Panasonic does not include glasses in the box for North American sets this year. Yeah, it's a bummer, but the good news is that this year Samsung's cheap SSG-4100 glasses are fully operational with the VT50. I own a pair and a pair of the official Panasonic-made TY-ER3D4MU glasses, and performance is identical, although I find the Panasonic glasses have bigger lenses and are more comfortable. One thing I did not test much is the Viera Connect platform. I poked around a bit, and it seems largely identical to the interface on my BDT310 Blu-Ray player but with the addition of the web browser. Since the VT50 has a dual-core processor it is quite a bit snappier loading apps and navigating between them, however. Panasonic includes a touchpad remote to make web browsing easier but I found it a bit awkward to use, and while the web browser is decent, I don't see myself ever using it. I don't want to browse the web on my TV, but for those that do, it's not bad.So while I generally try to shy away from giving products five-star reviews, I have a hard time finding anything bad to say about the VT50. The only thing I can really knock it for is the anti-glare filter - while it's incredibly effective, it does compromise the vertical viewing angle of the TV. I'm assuming it functions by absorbing ambient light from above and below the panel and rejecting it, resulting in a darkened image from above or below. The horizontal viewing angle is not compromised, so I certainly don't think it's worth taking a point away, especially considering that neither I nor anybody I know watches TV sitting below the screen or standing above it.All told, the VT50 is, simply put, the best plasma Panasonic has ever made, and represents more than a minor improvement over the VT30. Panasonic has set the bar not only for themselves, but has left Samsung in the dust this year. While Panasonic focused on drastically improving image quality this year, Samsung seems content with making minor improvements while adding a camera and frustratingly stupid gesture control to their plasmas. Highly recommended!

4Great TV for the size and price
By Daniel R. Gresko
Had this TV for about 1 month now. Got at BJs, delivered for under $1200. Set up pretty simple. I used the THX Optimizer which is found on most Lucas DVDs such as any Star Wars. So far, Id say the picture is great. Normal cable is what it is, its ok. But I have HD programming and a PS3, which I use for Blue Ray disks. HD looks great! Ive seen so many posts on the net that say 1080 on a TV less that 42 in is not noticable...well, thats BS. I can see a huge difference and the HD and Blue rays look very nice. Also, with 5ms response time, I have no blurring or ghosting when I game, and I play a lot of fast race games.Pros - Great picture and easy to set up.Cons - Only one so far is the remote needs to be aimed right at the TV or it wont work.If a 40 In TV will fit your needs( I have a 800 SF apt, and this TV is a perfect fit), you cant go wront with this TV.

5Excellent initial impression
By Guillermo Pineda
I've had this 1080p/20000:1/5ms/60Hz LCD for a week and my initial experience is extremely satisfactory. It performs as advertised for HDTV, DVD, & PC (haven't tried gaming yet). Works great in a brigth room. No pixelation in fast scenes. Easy access menus. Plenty of inputs for my needs. Looks great. After offers and coupons, my total price at a local B&M store was $1,356 including the LCD, a sleek Samsung 1080 up-conv. DVD player, a 4-year extended warranty and taxes. Can't complain!Minor cons: Below average sound. Remote control must be carefully aimed at the front of the TV, very narrow angle of operation.Bottom line: If a 40-inch screen size is enough for your viewing needs, this unit holds its own against any other top competitor brands in this category.

5Samsung LN40A530 40-inch 1080p LCD HDTV
By Desertdaddio
Samsung LN40A530 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTVWhat a bargain. I went shopping for a Sony and ended up with this great TV. Everything is there for your needs. I have no reason to connect my laptop, but it will do that if you want. The picture is stunning. I compared this to the more expensive models in both Samsung and Sony, and didn't notice much difference. The sound is exceptional, so I don't run it through my system except for some movies. There are three energy saving modes. I have mine set at medium at night. If you have the setting off, it's brilliantly blinding! You need to have additional lighting on.A great value, great picture (5 ms), and great sound. The manufactures website hasn't caught up with certain stats, so don't rely on everything you read on there site. Why spend more!

5Unexpectedly FANTASTIC!
By Ethan A. Winning
We have had two new HD TVs for just a bit over 5 months. One is a 23" Sony and one a 32" LG. The Sony hooked up easily, but the LG was like our first color set. We diddled with picture, sound, aspect ratio, and other settings to get the best picture and sound on each channel. I still don't know if the differences between channels is resolution, settings, or in the case of the news, makeup. But we were just happy to get it so that we could see all the face lifts...Now for the Haier, a relatively unknown Chinese brand of high definition TV. I plugged it into our Comcast cable box using an HDMI cable, and bingo, a bright and sharp picture with wonderful sound. For a few minutes I was sure a mistake was made, and we had been given a 1080p instead of the 720 that was on the box. Perhaps anything under 50 inches doesn't matter. We think that the Haier is just as good and maybe even a little better picture than the LG! Not one factory setting had to be changed! The sound from the built-in speakers is excellent - in part due to using an HTMI cable - and the Sound Leveler really works. No more spikes when changing channels and it even works on commercials that used to blare 10 db higher than the program.(The hookups and quality are very good with our DVD player and photographs on a flash drive, but they will not be used very much. The TV will not be used with our computer, so I can't address that either. Some will complain about the inputs being placed under a lip in the back, but most HD TVs use the same configuration because so many people will wall mount the TV. If the plugs were straight in, the TV would not be flush with the wall.)Initially, we had so much trouble with the remote from Comcast, that I was about to give this only 4 stars. We can only get HD through the Comcast box, and the Comcast remote - as bad as it is - should be our only remote. But the Comcast remote would not accept the two codes for the Haier TV, and I thought we would have to use two remotes. I called Comcast, and they gave me the same two numbers that came with their box. I called Haier, and they told me that they DIDN'T HAVE CODES FOR Comcast. All was not lost, however. I went on line, asked for "Comcast remote codes for Haier," and the second link was a discussion where one respondent said, "Try the codes for DURABRAND."The third code under Durabrand (10178), and we were set!(And, since I've now been asked this question 4 times by people who are concerned about whether it will fit into their cabinets, the set is 31.25 inches wide, i.e., side-to-side! The 37.8 inches they refer to is diagonally!)I said in the title of this review that it was unexpectedly fantastic. Well, this is a phenomenal TV especially considering that it was the least expensive of all 32 inch HD sets. We now have great Hi Def in our bedroom where, in six minutes, I'm going to watch the last game of the World Series! (Sure, I could watch it in the living room, but I like new experiences.)EW

5Great picture quality with a great price!
By Michael Daugherty
I purchased this TV to replace an aging 55" rear projection Mitsubitshi that i had set up in my office. While browsing the deal sites I noticed this TV listed at $197 dollars and clicked the link to the Amazon site. I was not familiar with the Haier brand of televisions and thought of it as a cheap knockoff TV with subpar screens. There were only four reviews of this TV while i was contemplating the purchase and though they were mostly good i was a little leery about buying this. Amazon made the decision easier by offering a 30 day guarantee with free return shipping so I went ahead and purchased the TV. I am a subscriber to Amazon Prime, so 2 day shipping was free. The TV showed up on my doorstep 2 days after the purchase. Thank you Amazon. The box that the TV came in was in great shape. There were no dents and it didn't look like the box had been abused. The packaging for the TV was superb. I unwrapped the TV and removed the plastic on the front of the TV. The front bezel is a very shiny plastic. The stand which is also a shiny black plastic comes with 4 screws to attach to the TV. This TV comes with a glowing light at the bottom center of the bezel which indicates whether the TV is on or off. It shows red when off and green when on. Nice touch for such a low priced TV. I hooked my DirectTV box to the TV and selected the correct HDMI input. The inputs on the back are not exactly in the best positioning for connection of your devices. I assume they configured the hookups that away because some people like to hang the TV's on the wall install of the stand. The picture on this TV is very clear with very good color saturation. Some TV's look a bit washed out but not this TV. Would this TV compare to a high definition TV such a Sony or Samsung? I would say no, but you would pay much more for one of those TV's. Some people have said that the sound is not very good on this TV. I find that the sound is more than adequate. It gets plenty loud in my office. I've never owned any TV where the sound is great coming out of its own speakers. Thats why they have surround systems. People, for the price you cannot go wrong with this TV. If this is the size of TV you are looking for and are wanting to use it in a bedroom or office or anywhere a smaller TV is adequate I would say...Buy it now!!! Before the price goes up.

Samsung LN-S4695D 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Product Description

The quintessential 46" flat-panel LCD screen is capable of producing 1080p (progressive) image resolution that takes HDTV to an even higher range of detail. With up to a 6000:1 contrast ratio blacks are blacker and white are whiter for images that exceed anything previously displayed by other LCD TV screens. There are over two million pixels resulting from the 1920x1080p resolution of this screen that is fully capable of displaying HD images in the true 1080p ideal. That's about twice as many pixels as a typical HDTV LCD screen (at 1366x768). Most other screens can only display 720p or 1080i in HDTV modes. When considering new external high-definition video sources, this LCD takes you to a higher realm than typical HDTV. It is capable of displaying over 12.8 billion color combinations. The new, optimized game mode and fast 8ms response time will thrill avid gamers with its movie-like visuals. The audio system is equally impressive, with hidden bottom speakers that offer SRS TruSurround XT sound. A 178-degree viewing angle and convenient swivel stand let you enjoy shows from anywhere in the master bedroom, living room or den. We should make a brief pause to discuss the achievement of 6,000:1 contrast-ratio from an LCD screen. Contrast ratio deals with the integrity and optimal range of black and white shading on your screen. While most large LCD screens previously achieved about 1200:1 or 2,000:1 readings, plasma screens delivered up to 10,000:1. Offering 6,000:1 means delivery of the best picture available on a home LCD flat-panel. It also makes a great PC monitor. This is high-definition as it was meant to be! Fast 8ms response time + New optimized game mode Includes Swivel stand but may also be optionally wall-mounted with a VESA compliant bracket ?Hidden? bottom speakers SRS TruSurround XT 10 Watts by 2 channels power output Connectivity - 2 HDMI / 2 Component video inputs (Y,Pb,Pr) / S-video an

5Awesome TV!
By Rahul Deshpande
Bought the TV a week back after months of agonizing over Sony XBR and Samsung, and I am glad of the choice I made. It's probably the best LCD tv I came across with eye-opening contrast. The picture is exceptionally clear, even for the SD programs. Obviously, I can't test 1080p, but its a probably a good thing to have for 'future-proofing'. ( I did see a Samsung demo of 1080p on this model...its quite impressive). The native resolution of 1920x1080 also works great for connecting to PC. Movie Picture mode produces great black levels comparable to Plasmas.Advantages -1. Great looking - elegant.2. 1080p with 1980x1080 native resolution.3. Great dynamic contrast ratio - 6000:14. Separate Game mode.5. Great even for SD.6. 8 ms response time7. less expensive than XBR.Disadvantages -1. The only difference I could think of between Bravia XBR and this one is 2 HDMI inputs instead of 3 for BRAVIA. Not a big deal for me.Overall - I love it.

5Awesome!
By KRL
Did tons of research and Samsung seemed the way to go. Even though all my purchases thru Amazon were great, I was a bit leary of buying this TV online due to the return policy. I decided to go for it since I would save close to 1000.00 which included free shipping and no tax. Amazon came thru again, and everything was perfect. The TV is very slick in design and the picture is beautiful.Do not expect to see a picture like you do in the stores. Unless you have High Def channels available, your picture will not be as clear. It looks great from 10 feet away, but as you get closer the resolution is not as good. High Def channels make a HUGE difference.

5Great Set
By C. Longo
I have been dragging my heels entering the HDTV era for years now. I sat by while my early adopter friends bought their first HD sets, waiting for HD to reach "prime time" status. Finally, the combination of 1) 1080p 2) HDMI 3) lower prices across the board are what ultimately drove towards me to getting my first HD set.I researched models for months before buying. I first looked at the Sharp Aquos line which seemed great until I started reading of "banding" issues (a manufacturing flaw) which plagued nearly all Aquos models 40-inches and over. Being the obsessive type, I could not justify spending that much money on a set with problems out of the box. Next I looked at the Sony XBR2 and XBR3 series, which also seemed great. In the end, two things turned me off 1) The price was $500 - $1000 more than comparable Samsung or Sharp models and 2) Reports of "clouding" issues, where black screens have noticeable white blotches, another manufacturing flaw.I spent hours upon hours reading threads at the excellent AVS Forums about the Samsung models and was surprised to see nary a complaint uttered. For those who don't know, AVS is a haven for hardcore home theater enthusiasts. These guys mull over every single pixel of a display. If there is something wrong with the set -- they will let you know. Post after post were overwhelming positive about the Samsung sets, both the LN-S and LN-T lines, even in threads about Sharp and Sony sets :) Comfortable I was not about to drop over two large on a lemon, I pulled the trigger.I've had the set for three weeks now and I have zero regrets. The thing I worried the most about before receiving the set was the black levels. Apparently, LCD displays cannot render truly deep blacks that Plasma displays can. I worried for nothing. The blacks seem plenty black to me, even with all the lights off. There's also an "Energy Saver" mode available directly from the remote which toggles the backlight between four levels, so you can adjust the black levels even further. The colors on this set just "pop" -- it's amazing. I've started watching "Sunrise Earth" on Discovery HD every morning while getting ready for work because it just looks so good. This is going to sound like total BS, but the first day I played Sunrise Earth on the new set there were ducks on onscreen and my dog ran across the room, sat down in front of the set, and started barking :)The set has a DNIe mode which automatically tweaks the onscreen colors and sharpens the picture. This mode can provide some amazing images for most content, but I found it cause artifacts in DVDs and sports. I suggest anyone who dislikes what DNIe does to DVD content turn it off and get a Lucas Films DVD and use the included THX Optimizer to tweak the set yourself. The truth is that 90% of the people who buy this set won't care about such subtleties and don't have to touch a setting to get a great picture.Overall five stars. Great picture, great price. Two HDMI ports and 1080p make it future proof. The Samsung LN-S and LN-T lines are, at the moment, the best bang for the buck in the LCD market.

1Piece of Junk
By TABITHA D SAUCIER
I bought this tv a little over a year ago, the picture quality was amazing, however after a month after one year the tv turned green in color. I had the extended warranty and was able to get the problem fixed, two weeks later the tv screen started going black every 20 minutes or so. I again called the tv repair company and they came out and fixed the TV again.. I have had both the power supply, main board, and tv screen fixed and the tv screen is again turning off. I can't believe not even the new parts are working. this is crazy. I paid over 1100 for this tv and It is the worst thing ever.

5Best picture for the price!
By RoyBoy
I bought this item on Cyber monday and I have been wowed ever since. I was looking at other tv's at a store and none with 4 or 5 hundred more dollars on the tag even looked better. I play my video games on it, watch much football and many movies and I have nothing but good to say. I just hope I am still saying this a year from now, I will update if the status changes.

5I'm happy
By Pastor Zeb
What a great price! What a great TV! I could have spent more money and gotten a newer model, but this TV had an RCA audio output for connection to my home entertainment center that the others lacked. (The sound from most flat screen TV's is notoriously poor, and I didn't want to hassle with a sound bar.) The picture is great, and setup was a breeze. It was also kinda neat that the delivery guy wanted to stick around and play with it once we got it out of the box!

5Excellent TV
By Tommy J
Well, I finally broke down and bought an LCD tv. After studying LCDs for about a year. I decided against WIFI in a tv. The problem is keeping a wifi tv updated with current apps. It seems that due to models rapid changes that most TV companies do not wish to spend the resources to keep old models (probably discontinued) updated. So the best option is to save the money abd add a Roku to handle the wifi apps. Roku automatically updates as necessary. I have had a Roku for a few years and they are rock solid.I have presently an old 37 tube type tv. It has been a good tv but it is hopelessly outdated. Now the only problem I have is getting someone to remove it (it weighs a ton) and dispose of it. It still works but it is not a digital tv (got to have the "box" for conversion) or in my case Direct TV..I also, didn't want a 3D TV. 1. I get headaches watching a neighbor's 3D. 2. 3D movies (mostly cartoons)are hokey expensive refurbs (~30-50 bucks). 3. The glasses are expensive. Also, I didn't want the super-duper "easy" controller. Most of these things are a pain. So why waste the money? The LG 570 is very well designed and the menus are easy to navigate. Most are for fine tuning if that is your bag. Me, I plugged it in ran the basic setup time zone, picture, and etc. It works great. I plug in the Roku and wow,, beautiful picture. The remote is well laid out and logical. I dislike those "control" everything remotes as they are a major pain to set up and only halfway work.Just a suggestion on unpacking. When messing with LCDs never touch the screen. I turned the box upside down edgewise. carefully cut the tape. Open the flaps tape them open if necessary. Turn the box top side up edgewise. Then simply left the box off while holding the TV. Now carefully study the stand installation in the included manual. There is an extra part (dust cover) which is installed when wall mounting the TV. It covers up the hole the table stand is installed in.The screws are in the bag the manual was in. I wouldn't use a power screw driver. Gently tighten each screw when all the other screws are installed. I propped the TV up by the backside. In my opinion it is not a good idea to lay it screen down even if the surface looks flat. The two table stand parts fit perfectly together. Attach four screws and snug them down. If you have to force the parts you have them wrong. Then drop the stand into the mount hole on TV. Of course the wide part of stand is to the front of TV. Install and snug four screws.I downloaded the full manual (about 70 pages)from the LG tech support website. Note; When searching the model number leave off LG letters. There is a ton of features available explained in the big manual. The included manual is just a bare bones getting started type..I got a handyman coming over take out the old TV (too heavy for me and my bad knee). Then I can hook up surround sound (fiber optic connection). There is no analog sound output. There is an input button on the top of the remote that brings up the input screen. Only those inputs that are active are selected. Also, you can create labels for the inputsI tried out a USB dongle with a ton of pictures. The folder navigator works good. There is a Vista type picture player that pops up when you select a picture and then you can do a slide show. Works very smooth.Ye Gods, 42 inches is HUGE. My first TV (cost about $1000 in today's money) was a 19 inch Admiral (that was a big one in 1950). Hey, 20 yrs before I had a "cat whisker" crystal radio. Grandpa said I was crazy to spend that kind of money on a silly box that was just a "fad". He sure enjoyed the old "Oprey" on the "fad".The local antenna input has an automatic scanner that picks out the "good"signal channels. It takes a bit of time in the Phoenix area. Just be patient. Geezz,I didn't realize how many digital channels there are. You may have to go back and delete some. The Quick menu is fast for deletes and adding. Note: when local antenna is hooked up no signal will be present until the scan is completed.I will do updates as time goes by. So far I LOVE IT!!!!Update (next day): AUDIOWell, hooking up the surround sound (7 speakers )was a learning experience. Hooking up the fiber optic cable is a lot easier if you remember to remove the dust covers on each end of the cable (Amazon has them cheap). The sound is incredibly crystal clear. I knew there was loss in the analog cables, but I had no idea it was that much! Wow!! The Bose speakers came alive. I could blow out the windows at half power. My ears would probably go first. So I was careful with the sound level.A big problem with a audio optic output is that there is no volume control on the source. The sound level is controlled only by the speaker power amp. But the crystal clear sound is worth the inconvenience. When using my DirectTV box there was no optical output so I ran the cable (yellow, red white)into AV1 on the TV. I put the Ruko on HDMi 1. Every thing worked great. Now back to the sound level problem: The TV in house speakers are good (not great)but the sound volume control on remote works good. I have a 19 LCD tv and it had terrible speakers so I installed a Logitech computer sound system with bass unit(Amazon) plugged into the headphone jack on TV. Problem solved. As the LG has a headphone jack, I may do the same.Tune the Direct TV to ch 802 power up the surround sound the 1950's Doo Wop rocks (best music ever written of course Glenn Miller and Neil Diamond are close). The bass box rattles the windows. I mute the sound on the TV kick back and let the Malt shop memories flood back (News Flash: To all male younguns out there: Girls are predators and always have been)! Now I am going to dump my old DVD player and get one with optical output.Update:The Direct TV programming code for DTV remote is 10178.The DTV remote programming is in the system menu. You hold down the mute and select buttons until the TV light (move selector to TV) on Remote blinks 3 times. Then enter code. The sound button on DTV remote should popup the volume level indicator on TV screen. If so move the selector back to DTV and you are in business.New Update: The in house speakers are so, so. I took the logictech computer speaker system and plugged them into the TV phone jack. Much better sound. The bass unit is really good.PROBLEM: When you plug into head phone jack the fiber optic sound output cuts off. RATS, why did they do that? I wanted leave the computer speakers in and still be able to use the surround sound system for Netflix. So I am stuck with the cheapy in house speakers. The audio features are not well thought out...If you don't need the fiber optic audio out. Then get Logitech speakers with bass unit. They sound MUCH better than the in house speakers...

5Comments Actually Pertaining to this Specific TV Model
By W
I decided to buy LG's (well-reviewed) 42LK520 at the exact time it was discontinued and no longer available. That's what I get for procrastinating. The replacement for 2011's 42LK520 is 2012's 42CS570. On paper, the basic specifications are almost the same as the 42LK520. Since new-model reviews aren't available yet, I had no reason to not get the 42CS570 given the similarities. The owner's manual available from LG's support website details the inputs, outputs, and menu options available on the TV. The manual appears to be accurate and only covers the 42CS570 and 47CS570 models (ie - not too much "depends on model" content). Specifications are finally up on LG's product page, though they still have some errors. For instance, they only list one rear AV input. In fact, there is also a second, side AV input. The 42CS570 is a 42-inch, 1080P, 120Hz, LCD TV listed for $699.99. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 150,000:1 contrast ratio. On the rear panel, there are 2 HDMI, 2 Component, 1 AV (Composite), 1 RGB (PC), 1 Antenna / Cable (RF), and 1 Audio (RGB / DVI) inputs, with 1 Optical Audio output. On the side panel, there are: 1 USB, 1 HDMI, and 1 AV (Composite) inputs, with 1 Headphone Audio output. The channel, volume, and other controls are touch-sensitive areas on the front of the TV.The TruMotion menu option has two components: De-Judder and De-Blur. Both components take a value between 0 and 10. There are three pre-set options: Off (0, 0), Low (3, 3), High (7, 7). A fourth option, User, allows for either component to be set to preference. The TV comes with a power-saving / screen-dimming feature turned On. At night, I actually thought this was sort of nice. During the day I turned the feature Off. Otherwise, I thought the picture settings out-of-the-box were actually pretty good. Setup was quick and easy.According to an online source, the TV (like LG's other 1080P models) has only IPS panels. My TV has the following product code: 42CS570-UD-AUSYLUR. Other online sources stated that the "Y" in the 4th-from-right position indicates an IPS panel. The shipping dimensions (W x H x D) are roughly: 48 inches x 30 inches x 6 inches.I replaced an old 32-inch Panasonic CRT TV. So, obviously this LG HD TV is a noticeable upgrade. That said, I can't really comment on how the screen or engine compares to other HD TVs. I'm receiving over-the-air HD channels through a cheap, GE indoor antenna I've had for years, similar to the 24731. I have my Wii connected through a Monoprice Composite cable. Through a Monoprice HDMI cable, I'm running a Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Blu-ray player I purchased for Blu-ray content, streaming content, and miscellaneous content I have on my Synology DS211J NAS acting as a DLNA server. Just for giggles, I also ran a 25-foot Monoprice VGA cable (with audio) from my laptop to the TV. Everything works as well as expected. Picture is great for all uses. Sound is good as well. With realistic expectations, I haven't run into anything to complain about yet.If you have other hardware to handle "smart" services, or just don't care for those services, and don't care to be on the cutting edge of 3D and LED panels, this is an ideal TV. As a 1080P, 120Hz TV with a good set of inputs, this is a quality HD TV that lists for $100 less than last year's nearly identical model.Obviously, I can't comment on the device's longevity. I've run plenty of test scenarios, but I've only had it for a few days. Time will tell. Advertised warranty is 1 year parts, 1 year labor. For the record, I wanted nothing to do with 3D. I had to consider screen glare. I felt a 42-inch TV best fit my living room layout and I had a budget to meet. For my budget, I preferred 120Hz LCD over 60Hz LED-LCD and I preferred 1080P LCD over 720P plasma. Compare to other 42-inch LG models for price and features.42LM6200 = 42-inch, 3D, 1080P, 120Hz, Smart, LED-LCD TV listed for $1,299.9942LM5800 = 42-inch, 3D, 1080P, 120Hz, LED-LCD (not yet available)42LS5700 = 42-inch, 1080P, 120Hz, Smart, LED-LCD TV listed for $1,099.9942LS3400 = 42-inch, 1080P, 60Hz, LED-LCD TV listed for $719.9942CS560 = 42-inch, 1080P, 60Hz, LCD TV listed for $629.9942PM4700 = 42-inch, 3D, 720P, 600Hz, Smart, plasma TV listed for $699.9942PA4500 = 42-inch, 720P, 600Hz, plasma TV listed for $549.99

5Xbr vs Sumsung Are you looking for an LCD???
By DB
I don't usually write alot of reviews, but I did a lot of research for this tv purchase. We were upgrading our family room tv from a 35in 720p toshiba tv. We were looking at the 52 inch mark, plasma vs lcd. In a quick review make sure you consider what room you will be placing your new tv into. You are about to spend big bucks make sure you are honest about where these tvs are going or you will be unhappy!First Plasma vs LCD (This comes from my reading again at higher end plasma vs lcd at the $3000-4000 range 52in-61in)PlasmaGood-Clearly plasma edges lcd in contrast. If you are looking for the truest blacks plasma wins hands down-Long life 80000+ viewing hours-Some people complain of motion artifact in lcds. The "triple football" effect. Plasma does not seem to have this problem.-Clearly cheaper than lcd at the 46in+ mark, Significantly cheaper if looking at the 60+ inchBad-Heavy (don't think you are going to mount this baby on the wall yourself-Screen reflection (Must be in a room with low light to no light to really enjoy) Great for dedicated movie room ...family room with windows not so much.-Burn in for gamers---I think they are working on this but don't take a chanceLCDsGoodMaybe not the best for true black, but truly excellent. You won't know unless you are a cnet reviewer.Light- you can move this with your significant otherNo chance of burn inNew 120hz refresh has made ghosting football effect no longer an issueNow have big computer screen if you want to hook up a pcNo reflection from screen. Works well in rooms with lightBadIf you are looking at 60+inch tv's the price is crazy for lcd--- go get a plasma or direct viewNot the truest of blacks if you must have the truest of trueOk so that being said the sony xbr seemed like it fit the bill for me. I needed ~52inch, has to go in family room, must work with xbox/playstation. I also watch lots of football so I had to take that into consideration.Armed with this I went out looking at tv's. LCD overall fit what I was looking for and as I said unless you are making a dedicated movie room go with lcd. As a note sony believes in lcd tech so much they stopped making plasma screens! Don't know if this is all that but sony usually knows their business. So going out looking at 52 inch lcds you will run into a few choices---Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sharp.Quickly I will note that toshiba and sharp are on the lower end. Less contrast, less hdmi inputs etc...however are usually less money! So be sure to look, but overall the samsung and sony tvs are far superior for a few hundred extra. So if you are reading this you are clearly looking at the xbr sonys. It really came down for me to Sony xbr4 vs the Samsung 71 series. These are really close or even almost the same tvs. The sony xbr4 has 3hdmi, 1:13000 contrast, and 120hz. The samsung 71 also 3hdmi, 120hz, but 1-25000 contrast. The contrast generally considered the amount of true black from the screen. Overall I would say that gave the edge to the samsung and if you read reviews you will see people raving about the samsung vs the sony xbr. However! and this is a big however! Samsung coats their lcd's with a coating that does have a moderate amount of reflection. I have no idea why as this killed it for me. And I am serious that you need to think about the lights in your room. If you have any windows or lights if front of the tv that is what you will be seeing in a plasma or samsung. It will drive you nuts! There is no NO reflection from the xbr4. So ultimately I purchased the xbr4 from amazon. The picture is amazing from my hd tivo to bluray, hd dvd, and standard is well standard. Although numbers say the samsung is better in the real world you will not notice the difference. So I am happy to say this is a five star tv.Also of note:Sony offers the xbr5 version of this tv. $400 for a piano gloss black rim. Not worth it to me for plastic.Samsung also offers an 81 series, with 1:500000, and increased backlights. They are about 1G more than the 71 series and xbrs and if you are looking at high end plasmas, I would take a look at these too. However, same reflective coat.Decide this isn't for you and want to go plasma... Well I looked at that too. Stick to Panasonic and Pioneer and you can't go wrong. Pioneer kuros hands down the best plasma to date!!!!Good luckPS-----I didn't have any problems with amazon white glove. TV was purfect. I was called and two guys unpacked with no problem, even helped move the other tv.

5A Great Sony LCD-TV!
By Curtis Bard
I love Amazon for allowing these reviews, they could censor them to edit out info about other companies and competing sources, but they don't. These reviews have helped me immeasurably in choosing the right TV and other items, so I'm posting this so others can likewise be helped by my experience. We researched LCDs and Plasma TVs for one whole year, and we agree with most other reviewers who report that the new Samsung and Sony 46" and 52" LCD-TVs are the best. Up to this point Consumer Reports had placed the 50" Panasonic at number 1, but that is last years models. I'm confident that when they rate all the new models this and other Sony and Samsungs will be at the top of the list.We visually compared all the latest models and every time we found the same thing: that the best HD picture was with the Sony (#1) and the Samsung (#2). The Sony had slightly better clarity and sharpness and color, and sound, and the Samsung had slightly brighter whites. We even created our own little weighted feature comparison chart, and when cost was considered, these two makes came out almost exactly the same. You can tell by the reviews that many more people purchase (the 46" & 52") Samsung instead of the Sony. That is because the Samsung costs so much less, and goes on sale at a higher discount. The Sony is the best of the two, but the Samsung is the best value because of the price. We even compared them with the 50" Panasonic and the highly respected Kuro Pioneer 50" sets, and the Sony and Samsung came out ahead.Conventional wisdom says that Plasma TVs have better market share, prices, blacks, contrast, and are generally speaking a little better than LCD TVs, but when comparing these two LCD brands (Samsung & Sony) with various Plasmas in regard to overall color, contrast, brightness, and clarity, our opinion is that the Plasmas have now met their match, and then some when all aspects of HD-TVs are considered. Some reviewers have said that the automatic volume control (IMHO, a much needed feature) does not work on the Samsungs or on the Sonys. I can't confirm that this is true in regard to the Sony, because we use the Sony with a surround sound (Onkyo) system which automatically disables the TV speakers and the Steady Sound feature which only works when the TV speakers are being used.last years TVs (even the Sonys) had relatively poor Standard Definition, but the newer 120 hz models with the faster refresh rate have excellent HD quality and VERY good SD quality. Some people like a glossy screen (like glossy photos) it seems to make the picture look deeper or better, but if you have a lot of light or windows in your TV room, then the Sony is for you. It has a coating that almost makes reflection a non-issue. And the Sony backlight automatically adjusts itself in bright / dark rooms. We bought Onkyo HT-SP908 7.1 Channel Home Theater System, speaker stands, a Playstation 3 to play Blu-ray HD DVDs, a couple of the recommended Monster 1000 HDMI cables, and a wall bracket to mount the TV on the wall later. So if you want the BEST PICTURE without regard to price- buy the SONY. If you want the BEST VALUE for your money - buy the SAMSUNG!

5Very, very good TV
By Demon3
I previously owned a Samsung 46 inch LCD with 720p resolution and sold that to get something bigger and better. I mention that to set the context that I am used to HD TV and the picture quality.I was not expecting that the picture would be noticeably better than a TV from last year but I was wrong. Having looked at every 52 inch LCD and many 46 inch LCDs it was clear that this and the Samsung 120Hz TV are the best at the moment. I went for this Sony and I am thrilled at how great the picture is. On HD TV it is very satisfying. Running off an HD DVD player (yes 1080p), the picture is breathtaking. The Planet Earth HD DVDs are incredible (the BBC full version). If you are hesitating as I was then I can only say that if you take the plunge and buy this then there will be no regrets regarding picture quality. The Samsung is also superb. If you see no difference between the picture on this in the store and something cheaper then save your money.-update- after 3 months I am equally stunned by the picture, this is one of the best purchases I have ever made. To see a breathtaking image quality try Hot Fuzz on HD DVD.
