4Excellet TV overall, Oustanding when viewed from front and center
By SGatefield
As of this writing (Sept. 25, 2011), I've had the Sony XBR-55HX929 for just over two months, so I thought it was about time I shared my impressions of it. Nothing I have to say differs significantly from what other (positive) reviews have said, but I thought I'd contribute to the collective wisdom.Let me start off with a bit of context: I have had, at least briefly, five HDTVs since March 2011: a 62" Mitsubishi WD-62525 (a rear projection TV with 720p native resolution), a Panasonic TC-P55ST30 (plasma), a Samsung PN59D6500 (also a plasma), a Samsung UN55D6900 (an LED edge-lit LCD), and the Sony XBR-55HX929 (LED backlit LCD with local dimming). The Mitsubishi died in late March and I have been searching for a replacement. As you can see, I've tried out just about the full array of TV technologies. My search has ended with the Sony XBR-55HX929, and I am very happy with it. I will compare the Sony with some of the other sets I've had below. There are a number of concerns that owners or prospective owners of the Sony have had, so let me address those. First, the build date. I ordered my set from Amazon.com on July 9, it shipped on the 13th and was delivered the 20th. It was assembled in Mexico in March 2011.The dreaded "crease": Yes, mine has the crease (a slightly darker "line" that appears along the sides of the image on many of these Sonys, usually on the left and right, but sometimes along the top and bottom edges, about an inch in from the bezel). I have fairly faint creasing on both the left and right sides. It seems a bit darker towards the bottom of the screen. However: I agree with many owners and contributors to discussion forums that under normal viewing circumstances--when you are watching "real content" rather putting up a uniform (or nearly uniform) field of color for inspection purposes--I never notice it. My wife has never noticed it, nor has anyone who has come over to see the set. I can see it on the PS3's home screen, but that hardly bothers me. It surprises me a bit that I say this, since I am quite picky and minor imperfections often irritate me to no end (this is one reason I've gone through all the sets mentioned above!). If I could see it when I viewed typical content, I'd return the set. But I don't. As it is now, I wouldn't dream of returning the set.So, my view is that the "crease" issue should not deter you from getting the Sony XBR-HX929. If you don't need a new set right away, by all means wait a couple of months and perhaps there will be a reliable stream of crease-free sets (though a recent comment from Sony UK has me somewhat doubtful). If you must buy now, I don't think the crease should scare you away from this set. (Well... I'm a bit torn about this actually: Despite what Sony UK has recently said, the crease is probably a manufacturing defect, and a top-of-the-line item shouldn't have manufacturing defects. So, I can sympathize with those who do not want to give Sony money for releasing a very expensive product with such a defect.)Like some others, I am planning to put a call it to Sony to report the crease. The more they hear about it, the more likely they are to do something. Also, if there is a recall, or an offer to replace sets with the crease, etc., I would certainly be interested in taking Sony up on that.Picture quality: I'm using David Katzmaier's (from CNET) recommended settings. Viewed from straight on, front and center, at eye level, the picture is outstanding (4.5 or 5 out of 5 stars). The blacks are truly black--deep, inky, and virtually indistinguishable from the bezel, especially when you view from a high-quality source like a Blu-ray. It is the only TV of those I've owned with blacks as deep as the Panasonic plasma's. These deep blacks make for excellent contrast, which (along with strong shadow detail and good gamma) gives the image natural depth and that "pop" that impresses viewers so much.Colors are both rich and realistic. Shadow detail is excellent. Blu-ray movies I've watched on this set so far include Toy Story 3, Baraka, Master and Commander, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Rango. All looked absolutely fantastic (though I give the overall nod to Toy Story 3). Best in-home theater experiences I've ever had. I am consistently "wow-ed" by the picture on this set.Comparison with the Samsung UN55D6900 LCD. The colors on the Samsung were excellent (once I got the user-adjustable settings right--which is relatively easy on the Samsung thanks to its RGB-only mode: one of the things I like better about Samsung than the Sony). Still, the Sony's are at least as good (I didn't do a side-by-side, simultaneous comparison, so it is difficult to say for sure which was better). However, there is one area in which the Sony clearly and, in my view, crucially bests the Samsung. The Samsung is an edge-lit LED-LCD (as are all of the upper end Samsung LCDs), which means that the LEDs that provide the light for the TV's picture shine in from the edges of the set--parallel to the surface of the screen/LCD. Like many owners of Samsung's LCDs (see user forums), I was really bothered by the flashlighting (when light from the LEDs bleeds into a corner of the image), clouding (areas of the screen that appear lighter than they should) and generally uneven dark-scene performance exhibited by this set. The Sony's full-array LED backlighting (in which the light producing LEDs are arranged behind the screen, shining light perpendicular to the surface of, or out through, the LCD screen) with local dimming is superior in this regard, hands down. Even my wife agrees. (Though she didn't think the improvement was worth the heftier price tag. Obviously I disagreed!) Using the PLUGE pattern on the DVE calibration disc, I could never get the 2%-above-black bars on either side of the central gray-scale bar to be equally visible on the Samsung--when the one to the left of the center gray scale was just visible, the one on the right wouldn't be. To improve this, I had to crank up the brightness, which improved shadow detail, but (obviously) hurt black levels. No such problem on the Sony. Both +2% bars are equally visible while the blacks stay black and shadow detail is preserved.Viewing angles: A weakness, and one of the reasons I don't give the set a 5-star rating. The Sony cannot compete with the Panasonic or Samsung plasmas on this aspect of picture quality. Still, the viewing angles are not as bad as I feared from reading reviews and some other user comments. The picture washes out worst as you move away from front-and-center when the material is dark, but from my usual viewing distance of about 10 feet, I can sit on either side of my couch (a three-cushion, 6.5ft couch) and notice very little change in the picture. I would say that viewing angles are comparable to the Samsung LCD (though I didn't do extensive tests on this--I was primarily concerned with screen uniformity when comparing these). For something like sports on ESPN, and most cable/ local broadcasts, I can walk from one side of the room to the other without any bothersome loss of picture quality.Blooming (a "halo" of light that shouldn't be there surrounding a bright object on a dark background): It happens, but again, not as bad as I feared. (It is worth noting that some blooming is virtually unavoidable on LED backlit LCD televisions.) With actual viewing material (blu-rays, dvd movies), viewed from front center, I observe infrequent blooming. Blooming is really only apparent on end credits, and images like PS3 pause and quit screens, but that hardly matters to me.Now, off-angle blooming is a different story. Not only does the screen wash out if you view from too far off-center, blooming becomes significant. Bad enough that it is another reason I don't give the set 5 stars. The moral: watch from front and center when you want that ultimate home theater experience! The edge-lit Samsung LCD didn't exhibit blooming to the same degree, even off angle--but I'll take the off angle and credit-screen blooming over flashlighting and clouding problems. (They are related problems, actually: all result when light from the LEDs shows up where it shouldn't.)Plasmas don't (or shouldn't) exhibit blooming, so again, the clear advantage goes to the Samsung and Panasonic plasmas on this aspect of picture quality.Dirty Screen Effect (uneven picture uniformity during pans that makes it look like there is something on the screen--sort of like a thin film of dirt): Yes, I notice it occasionally, but mainly on standard definition and pseudo-HD sources like Netflix streaming. I didn't notice it on any of the blu-ray movies I watched (see above).Video games/response time: My test material is Zen Pinball on the PS3. Good response times are important for this game (though not as much as for fighting games), since you want the "paddles" to move the instant you hit the shoulder buttons. Response time is good. Significantly better than on the Samsung LCD. I would say it is comparable or perhaps just slightly worse than the Panasonic plasma, though this is a memory-based judgment of which I am not terribly confident, so take it for what it is worth. Also: none of these sets were on Game Mode. I have local dimming set to Standard on the Sony. Response times are improved with local dimming set to Off and when the set is put in Game Mode. Nevertheless, I'm perfectly happy with the response times, even with local dimming On (the picture is better this way).Appearance: I think this is an awesome-looking set. The monolithic design, with the single sheet of glass from edge to edge is really cool. It is better looking than either plasma (the Panasonic has the most boring design), no question. It's a tough call between the Sony and the Samsung LCD. I thought the Samsung was also very good looking. It's a toss up, and I could see someone going either way. The Samsung is a bit flashier, a bit sexier, with the super-thin bezel and clear strip of plastic around the edge, but the Sony has a more refined, sophisticated look to it. I do wish you could turn off the green "on" light though... I don't need to be told that the set is on when there is an image on the screen!Reflectiveness: This was a pleasant surprise. CNET's review had me concerned that it would be very reflective, but it isn't. It is significantly less reflective than the Samsung LCD. It is similar to the Panasonic plasma. Can you see reflections? Yes, absolutely. But they are dull, muted and rather faint, despite the fact that I have two fairly large windows on the south-facing side of my 12'x10' living room (perpendicular to the direction the TV faces).Table-top stand: Yes, the TV wobbles when it is on the stand and you swivel the TV. I think any "single-stalk" swivel stand, as is also used by Samsung, will allow the TV to wobble. But unlike some others, I have no significant "tilting" or "listing" of the TV on the stand. Use a level when you put the stand together, check it when you put the TV on the stand, and only tighten the screws when you have it level (it can help to have another person hold the TV in the level position. You should be able to get it very level this way. The stand is much better than the Samsung's stand (I did have issues with the Samsungs, both the LCD and the plasma, being level) and it is made of tougher material. The Panasonic plasma was the sturdiest of the bunch, by far (but the Panasonic's stand was not a swivel stand, so...).Remote: I think the Sony remote is good. A little bulky, but the buttons are nicely arranged and on the whole it is very functional. The concave top really does guide your thumb naturally to the all-important central "enter" button. I like the dedicated Netflix button too--there's no easier way to watch Netflix: just two button pushes ("TV On" then "Netflix")!3D: I haven't used 3D on this TV yet, so I cannot comment. Reviews such as CNET's suggest that 3D is not this set's strong suit, and user forums don't do much to refute this. I do think it is ridiculous that Sony doesn't include a pair of 3D glasses, especially given the price of this TV. Which brings me to...Price: Prices have come down lately, and with the LG LW9800 and the Sharp Elite hitting the streets, it is no longer the most expensive consumer television in its category. But none of this changes the fact that this is a really expensive television. It is the most expensive I've had, and I never intended to spend this much. The Panasonic and Samsung plasmas offer much better value, in my opinion, while the uniformity issues with the Samsung LCD keep it from being a good value.Other: Some folks have complained about the organization/ ease of use of the menu systems, but I actually find the menus pretty sensible (of course, I'm used to the basic set up since I have a PS3, so...). Internet content is solid. Unlike some others, I have been able to use the browser--but it is quite slow and I prefer to do my browsing on a computer or an iPad anyway. It would be nice if Sony added the vTuner internet radio, as Samsung did, but this is a very minor complaint. Samsung offers the best suite of Internet options, in my opinion. But more importantly (for me), the Sony handles streaming video (e.g., Netflix) better than the Samsung LCD did. Streaming video often had significant "stutter" on the Samsung. To get rid of it I had to use motion smoothing, which resulted in the dreaded "soap opera effect", which I hate. True, I was able to tweak the settings to get it to look right, but the constant tweaking I was doing on the Samsung LCD was itself a problem. The Sony handles Internet content well in my preferred settings (and sometimes automatically shifts to a different setting, which also works well, then automatically returns to my custom setting when, for instance, I pop in a blu-ray).I have been very happy with how well the Sony works with my AV receiver--a Pioneer VSX-1021-K. The HDMI ARC works flawlessly (it was hit-or-miss with the Samsung LCD), and the Sony automatically turns the AVR on when I turn it on (doesn't automatically turn it off though), which is convenient. I never had to do anything to get it to do that (other than connect the two devices via their ARC-capable HDMI ports).I think that about covers it. Overall, the Sony XBR-55HX929 is an excellent TV. I initially wanted a plasma, but unfortunately I see "phosphor trails" when I watch plasmas (yellow after images/ flashes when I move my eyes or when a light object moves across a dark background) and I'm sensitive to the 60Hz refresh rate that Panasonic plasmas use, so no plasma for me. I'm happy to have found an LCD with a comparable, and in some ways better, picture--as long as you watch from front and center! Is this TV for you? It depends. First, you need to decide whether you want to get an LCD or a plasma. Many plasmas provide comparable or better overall picture quality for much less money. The Panasonic TC-P55ST30, for instance, is nearly as good as this Sony on black levels and color, while being clearly superior with respect to blooming and viewing angles, yet costs about half the price. But if you have a very bright room, or don't want to take reasonable precautions to avoid plasma burn in, or insist on the most energy efficient devices, then an LCD is probably the way to go. In that case, if you've got the money, insist on top-notch picture quality, and you (and maybe one other person) can typically watch TV from front and center, then you will be very happy with the Sony XBR-55HX929.

2Screen defects
By Gary
In sum, expect the beautiful display to be embarrassingly scarred after an inexcusably short amount of time, and then having to wait weeks for Sony to fix it. Picture looks great until screen fails - and it will. I haven't had the TV longer than 90 days, and a blue vertical stripe has developed running the entire height of the screen. I did some online research and this is a common problem. For the price I paid, and it being the "flagship" of Sony's TVs, this is not acceptable. Worse, the warranty repair won't even be scheduled for at least a week, and then who knows how long it will take before they can actually arrive and fix it (and the Sony phone rep disclosed that it will be another week if they have to order parts). In the past, I had similar problems with a Sony XBR projection TV, when the optical blocks had issues and the screen had yellow blotches just within a year or two of use. I should have learned my lesson then. Sony's poor track record of quality on their high-end TV's will burn them in loss of customer loyalty. Avoid this TV - not worth the price, shoddy quality, and hassle. **UPDATE: SONY decided to send me a replacement TV rather than sending a repair person. Per their manufacture's warranty agreement, SONY has the right to replace the TV with a referbished model, and that's exactly what the did. There's a sticker on the back declaring it refirbished along with several minor scratches on the back of the unit. Worse, the lower frame of the TV bulges down on the left side - looks like it wasn't glued or set properly (flush) with the screen glass. The TV also leans to the left on the stand by about a half inch, and there is noting I can do to fix it. In sum, it took SONY weeks to replace the TV, and they did it with a scatch n' dent model. This is nowhere near acceptable for a TV of this price, bought new, and less than 90 days old.

4Outstanding TV
By kcmurphy22
I waited 4 months for the TV just to make sure I wasnt going to miss something in my search for a new TV. I'm glad I waited. As a disclaimer I will say that the 3D aspect of the features were insignificant to me and my wife. I just wanted the best 2D picture I could find and right now I dont even own any 3d glasses, so it was a minor issue. I had looked at all the models and it was between the Samsung 8000 and LG W6500 and perhaps the Sony if it measured up (as it was late in releasing). Alot of things to like on all three models and I had looked at the LG and Samsung 20 times. Head on the Samsung has an outstanding picture. Even with slight angles the color saturation dropped as did the blacks etc. The LG kept them much better and with the Passive 3d and lower price I was pretty sure thats what I would be buying but opted to wait for Sony just so I wouldnt kick myself later.I would have. Seen side by side, all three of them, there was simply no comaprison and even my wife who is very uninterested commented on how much nicer the over all picture was (all sets in the store were set on vivid with no other adjustments). With even steep angle viewing the Sony lost far less than the Samsung and even the LG. The full array makes a huge difference and from 30 ft away the Sony leapt out in clarity, depth with virtually no judder (shudder, blurring) or whatever they call it. Picture is phenominal. It is as clean and pretty shut off as a TV can be. The Gorilla glass is ver nice, you can just use a nice clean rag and glass cleaner and it comes out beautiful Also while opening a cd case two fell out of my hand and hit the front. Probably wouldnt have hurt anything else but not a mark.CONS: Why I gave it 4 stars and not five. The directions stink and I just generally figured stuff out and the "internet" side of it is very slow (but thats why I have a Mac). The stand which is well designed and suitably robust still has a potential flaw and mine sags ever so slightly to the right but apparently Sony is sending someone out to see it which is impressive as I dont think they have alot out there. Lastly, it's expensive and it was hard to justify almost a thousand more in comparison to the LG but to me the picture warranted the difference. To others possibly not. Overall I am glad I waited. Compare them if possible side by side, close your eyes and sign the check it's probably worth it!

4After Firmware Upgrade - A Fine Small LCD TV for the Price
By JB
After my previous 13 inch Sharp LCD TV died recently, I was in the market for a new small LCD TV for the kitchen. After shopping around I purchased the Philips 19PFL3504D/F7 19 inch LCD HDTV from a B&M Target store; this is the same TV available here either from Amazon itself or sold through Amazon by target.com/ITC. IMHO this set competes with other 19 inch sets such as the Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black and Samsung LN19B360 19-Inch 720p LCD HDTV, Black, which cost $45 to $80 more than the price I paid for the Philips. (Due to reliability / customer service concerns I did not consider any of the numerous no-name or store brand TVs available.)First things first, at present the Philips requires a firmware upgrade (available at the Philips website) to eliminate an annoying high-pitched hum that occurs when the TV is powered off. If you have a computer and a USB flash drive this is an easy fix. Hopefully this will not be required on future shipment of the TV.Setup of the Philips was very straightforward, and includes a guided setup which displays several test images and has the user select their brightness / sharpness / color preferences. This appears to be a faster way to get a decent picture than having to manually guess what backlight / sharpness / brightness / color / tint settings are needed. Of course these manual adjustments are available if needed. After 20 minutes to initially scan analog / digital channels, the TV was ready to go. The QAM tuner was able to pick up all of the digital cable channels (SD and HD) present; due to the distance from broadcast towers I could not check OTA performance. Unwanted channels can be "skipped" via the Setup menu. The HD picture was excellent, with a bright picture, saturated colors, and good contrast. The SD picture was obviously a step down, but analog and digital SD channels were reasonably good. There are several options to present SD content stretched to fill the screen, but I preferred to stay in Normal mode and leave black bars on the side for SD content. The sound of the unit is fine, even though I was surprised to see that the speakers are located on the bottom of the TV (the pictures on Amazon make it look like these are front facing speakers). I had no issue getting adequate volume out of the speakers, and the sound quality is good considering the small size of this TV.The Philips tilts forward a bit and tilts backwards a bit more, which is useful if viewing the TV from above or slightly below. The horizontal viewing angles are very good, no real degradation of the image when standing to the left or right of the TV. Viewing from above is OK up to about 45 degrees. Viewing from way below can become a problem, so if mounting this TV high up (say on a wall mount) make sure you can tilt it down towards the viewer. (Note: most TVs I looked at locally exhibit the same issue when viewing from below - some at a much smaller angle than the Philips.)The Philips includes 2 HDMI inputs, component input, S-video / composite input, and VGA input. There is both a digital audio jack (coax) and headphone jack. Other standard features include sleep timer, parental controls, and sound equalizer. The two features I wish this TV had was a channel label feature (particularly useful to label the myriad digital channels this TV now picks up) and some type of Favorites feature to quickly tune to certain channels; the Toshiba mentioned above has these features at a higher price. I also have some concern over the long term reliability of this TV, as older 19 inch Philips models have some reliability complaints on here. I'll update this review if needed (hopefully not).In summary, after using this set for a while I would say that this is a fine TV for the price, particularly if you are able to get the unit on sale. It is missing a few features from higher priced Toshiba and Samsung offerings, but has fine picture and sound at a price competitive with the no-name brands.

2Great TV, but i'll never buy another Philips product.
By M. Coffer
I'll keep this short and sweet. This TV is really great. It's worth every penny. If it works. After having mine for about 8 months, I started having issues very suddenly. There was no power surge, no thunder storm, no dropping it or kicking it or anything of the sort. It just started not turning on. I called tech support and they told me how to fix it: hold down the power button for 15 seconds. Worked great...the first time. After that, I spent 20 minutes figuring out that I had to unplug the power cord for at least 20 seconds and then plug it back in before it would turn on again. I called Philips tech support again, and they told me they would send me a "new or refurbished" replacement. 8 days later, I received it, and opened it to find a horribly beat up, scratched and wobbly replacement. I immediately called Philips again and told them that it was absurd for them to send me a beat up replacement for my nearly-mint-condition TV (aside from THEIR manufacturing error with the power supply). I was told I would have to just live with it because Philips considered "cosmetic issues" unworthy of consideration, begging environmental conservation as their excuse. Why they can't just sell these crappy refurbished models to knowing consumers is beyond me.Long story short, after 8 months of treating my property with care and consideration, Philips gave me the shaft and despite the issue being their own fault as a manufacturer, repaid my patronage with a shrug of apathy.

1cheap, but to cheap
By Ryan J. Schaefer
Being a college student I am always searching for great deals on electronics, recently I have been looking for a small TV for my bedroom and I came across this philips 19' refurb for $134. I was a bit skeptical and read the reviews, most reviews were negative especially on the refurbished models. I went and purchased the TV anyway since I have had success with refurbished electronics in the past. Well this was my first bad experience, the reviews were true to their word. The power for the TV stopped working and i was no longer able to turn the TV on or off with the remote and this was the third day i had it, the only way i could get it to come on was to unplug the TV from the wall for a while. I called philips and they offered me the same model refurbished i said no thanks, I returned it and purchased a samsung 19' for $170, this TV had the best ratings and the fewest problems it is a little more expensive and the TV must be sitting at eye level to see the best picture, but i would rather have a TV with a little bit of an obscure viewing angle then a TV that doesn't turn on.

4Great HDTV, Huge Screen
By SMcrossbay
I have had this tv for 1 1/2 years now. The lamp died about 2 weeks before the manufacturer's warranty was up so i got a free one. Mitsubishi was very easy to work with, I faxed them my original invoice gave them the serial number and they sent a new lamp in 4 days, no cost to us at all. We only paid $599 for this HDTV, got it brand new on clearance sale so we feel like we got a awesome deal on this. I STRONGLY suggest the purchase of extended warranties on these if possible, the lamps cost approx. $240 to replace. We now have another year and a half extended warranty from the store we bought it from that will cover any work, parts & labor and a one time lamp replacement (we were lucky to be able to have the manufacturer replace the first lamp:) Overall great product. I Like the fact that it allows each input to be adjusted with individual video & audio settings. This model has Picture-In-Picture capability, and our satalite reciever also has P.I.P so we have the ability to watch 4 programs(football games:) at the same time. HD programing is superb. I hook up my computer through the side S-Video panel to play online games and its awesome.Problems: Only problem we have had so far is the lamp going out. It still had 2 weeks left under Mitsubishi's one year warranty so they sent us a replacement through the mail with instructions on how to install, it was easy to install. Make sure you hang on to your original reciept/invoice in case of warranty issues and always register new products with the manufacturer. Some companies require you to register products with them in order to activate your warranty and if you don't register it they don't have to honer the warranty! Always read the fine print. Recently the lamp light came on again and it seemed the after only about 5-6 months the new lamps had died. When i took the lamp out the go get it replaced i noticed that it looked just fine. I plugged it back in, closed tha panel hit the reset button, and it has worked just fine for almost 2 weeks now. I called mitsubishi and they said if it was bad it would most likely looked like it blew up inside the lamp and the tv might give a false dead lamp light and in order to fix it you have to open the lamp panel, take out the lamp, re-insert it, close the panel(tv will not turn on with the panel open,) hit the reset button, then see if it works.

4Solid HD picture. NO reflections from screen!
By Aaron
This review is for anyone considering purchase of a used WD-62531 (or the related models like WD-62530), because I found very few reviews when buying one.I purchased a used WD-62531 and it has a solid picture for HD source material. I've had it for about a week. General impressions:* BIG screen* Good quality image with HD source material. Even at 720p, still makes me sit there and watch nature programs that are quite lifelike* Mediocre quality with SD sources. Stretch mode is bad and distractive, so I view in 4:3 ratio with black bars on sides* Compact cabinet, especially with the matching stand (base of TV slides into custom contouring on stand). Screen is not overly high from ground so no neck strain if sitting on floor. Slides very nicely into a corner of the room.* Wide viewing angles, horizontal & vertical* Absolutely NO reflections off the screen. Quite astounding. I previously had a TV that was quite reflective and distracting. The 62531's screen doesn't reflect anything* Minor screen-door effect where things shimmer. Only noticed a couple of times on backgrounds with subtle gradients, like ice in a hockey game, and the blue sea in Finding Nemo.* Skin-tone color isn't quite right - slightly reddish. I'm still making some adjustments to the color settings, so perhaps with a little more experimentation this will improve.

4Good Product.
By Michael Cowans
I purchased the Mitsubishi brand TV after carefully doing some research on DLP type TV's. I was impressed from the start. I purchased a 62inch set in mid 2005 and had no problems for 2 years. When I did have a problem it was the lamp ($210.00) Shortly after that the Ballast went. $300 for part and $280 Labor.I can only say that make sure you purchase the extended warranty.I still like their TV's and would purchase another one.

3Lessons Learned
By Scotty D
Owning this, my first high-def TV, has taught me a lot,Pros:-Very good picture (although not the, "Wow!" you get when viewing others)-Two HDMI inputsCons:-No 1080p-Only 60 Hz-No DLP-No digital audio in-No dedicated DVI to connect a computer-Built-in tuner is extremely slow, essentially unusable-Built-in speakers are terrible, definitely going to need an external amp and stereo or surround sound speakers-The ballast went out after 18 months. $300 part $300 labor. The repair man stated that bad ballasts are a common problem with this product line. Thus, buy the extended warranty if you purchase this or the 2006/2007 version.

5Fantastic Image Display
By tbone
The picture on this TV was stunning right out of the box. After a few minor adjustments it was as close to perfect as I could imagine. It came with the SQ01 panel and it would be hard to differentiate the color depth and quality from some of the plasma sets I looked at. The TV is in a very bright room and the matte screen cuts out glare with no picture degradation. The viewing angle is very good, though we are never more than 25 to 30 degrees off center. The picture is very stable from channel to channel with no change in the back lighting that I can see, and the standard definition picture is almost HD quality when using the 16:9 picture format. It has separate settings for processing speed and anti-judder for motion blur when using the Custom view mode, unlike the majority of sets that combine both settings into one. I watch a lot of sports and really don't notice motion blur at 60hz so its certainly not an issue at 120hz. I'm not a gamer, so for my viewing habits I see no need to spend more for a 240hz option. The sound is very good for normal TV viewing. It can be connected to a home network and I have also hooked it up to my laptop using the VGA connection to watch Netflix and even that produces an acceptable SD picture. There are multiple picture settings you can use to suit just about any programming source, including watching at 120hz without the "soap opera" effect that some people find so annoying. There are 4 HDMI and 2 USB connections, plus one for headphones. There is no S video so you may need cables to hook up older external equipment. UVerse is the programming source. One thing about settings. The first evening the picture suddenly got much darker and even though I would reset the brightness, it would get dark again once I left the menu. I spoke with Samsung and they had no idea why this was happening. It turns out this set automatically adjusts the picture to your room brightness in the Standard viewing mode, which is the factory default. You can change this in the Eco portion of the picture menu to never go below a certain brightness level or you can turn it off completely. This is not an issue when using any other viewing mode. The last time I bought a LCD I continued to look around in case I found something better. That will not be the case this time as I am completely satisfied. Pilot shipping through Amazon was great. They delivered on time, set up the TV and swivel stand, and had everything working in 5-10 minutes.Added note on Warranty: If you purchase an item with your Amazon Visa, or pretty much any credit card from a major bank, it extends the manufacturer's warranty 100% over the original duration (one year to two, etc.) at no cost. Amazon verified this but check with your bank if you use a non-Amazon card.

5A Home Theater Centerpiece
By J. Hopkins
Firstly, it's important to point out that I was shopping strictly for a high quality 1080p display. I have a home theater with external speakers and an advanced learning remote so the TV's audio quality and stock remote played an insignificant role in my decision to purchase this model. Now then, the LN46C630 was the best 46" 1080p display I could find that had all the features I was looking for. My criteria were for a model with 120hz, an adequate amount of HDMI inputs (4), a pc input, largely tweakable picture controls, excellent black levels, an absence of motion blur, and a cost of under $1000. This TV possesses all of those things, and beat out the competition of similar LG and Sony models because of what I deemed to be the cleanest, most well defined image, along with superior black levels. The only thing I felt lacking on this TV was the screen texture which is more prone to glare. Though, because my room is quite dark that was of no real concern either, but could be to others with more ambient light in there viewing room. Here are a couple features I learned about only after I had the set that may be useful in making a decision.:-The TV has Eco Sensor which will automatically adjust the brightness of the TV based on the ambient light of the room. No worries, this CAN easily be turned off, and is definitely something to be aware of.-In the Advanced settings menu there are 2 expert patterns that you can use to dial in your picture settings. One is a contrast / brightness pattern, the other a color pattern.-If you'll be using the TV's speakers there is volume equalization which adjusts the volume automatically as you switch channel to channel.-You can stream media to this TV through your wired LAN or from an external USB storage device. if you want to do wireless, you'll need Samsung's optional wireless adapter.-The stock remote has a very narrow IR stream. You'll want to point it not at the center of the screen as most people do, but at the bottom right corner. It works fantastic once you learn to do that. Some other important notes I'd mention to those that purchase this model:-At default levels the contrast is maxed out to 100 for every input. I and many others refer to this as "torch mode". That setting will shorten the life of your TV immensely and it needs to be adjusted first thing for each input. While properly calibrating your TV is more than I care to get into here (and pointless since every display is different as well as every input), a setting of 50 contrast and 50 brightness is good place to start for those that don't have any other means of calibrating it more precisely. I also lowered the back light from a default 14 to 10.-Under the picture options there is a setting called Auto Motion Plus. This is what controls motion blur. Familiarize yourself with the effects of this control. If you are like me it's going be disturbing to have this control on "Standard' to view bluray movies because it removes the natural blur of the camera moving and panning which to me is an annoyance. I use the "Clear" mode or just turn it off for movies.-Also the effects of the sharpness control only add noise to your image, use the sharpness control very judiciously. I have mine all the way down to a setting of 9.All in all this is a fantastic set for the price. The very minor issues it has are far outweighed by the price, the amazing picture quality, and the tremendous control you have over adjusting the image to your liking.

3It has great potential
By rainmakr
I first ordered this set in early August and I really wanted to like this television. It is easy to set up, it has a good remote, and the built-in speakers are acceptable. At first glance, the picture is very good (once taken out of "torch mode" and the "soap opera effect" has been minimized by turning off (or minimizing) the Auto Motion Plus feature. The backlit remote is nice, but not *all* of the buttons are lit. I'm not sure why, and there were times when I needed the unlit ones. And, being unfamiliar with the remote, had to turn on/up the room lights to see what I was doing. But, the main problem I encountered with this set was the color uniformity. After having watched for a week and having some time to get past my initial awe at how good this set seemed to be, I noticed a flaw in the left side of the picture. When panning a football field, I saw that the left 6" or so of the screen was lighter than the rest. And when viewing scenes that had a lot of red in them, the left 6" of the screen was significantly lighter than the rest of the screen. Note that I was sitting about 8' away, dead center -- off-axis viewing was not the issue.I tried to ignore it, but finally created some solid color slides and viewed them using the television's built-in slide-show feature. What I found was that the left side was significantly lighter than the rest of the screen. It wasn't very noticeable on blue slides, but was very prominent on red and green slides, though bright reds & greens were less of an issue. I kept the TV second week, trying to get past it, but the problem was distracting when watching football. And, when watching interviews with "America's Got Talent" judges, their skin tone and the red backdrop was frequently discolored (interviews were usually framed with the face on the left side of the screen).I asked Amazon for a replacement, which they sent without a problem and at their expense (as was the return shipping). The replacement set I received was better. But, again about a week after having the set, I noticed the same problem (though not as pronounced). Again, I tried to get past it -- not only did I not want to deal with a return, but didn't want to deal with researching a replacement make and model. Just when I thought I could live with it, I noticed a 2" (approx.) vertical stripe on the left side of the screen. The stripe was a section of panel that was brighter than the rest of the panel. It had hard edges, indicating to me that it was a panel problem. During most shows I didn't notice it; but, it was very prominent during a few dark scenes of Up, Star Trek, and a few others.Again, I loaded the color slides I had made, which revealed light leakage (or clouding, whatever it's called), similar to the first set. It also revealed the stripe in quite a few of the slides. Considering the price of this television, I called Amazon and asked to return it. I was offered a replacement, which I considered, but ultimately decided to return it and get something else (Panasonic TC-P46G25).For those wondering, labels on both sets (and the boxes they came in) indicated an AA02 panel.Summary:-------PROS:- adequate sound quality from built-in speakers- decent remote- picture mode button on remote (Vivid, movie, etc)- Sleep button on remote- backlit remote- back of television has a kensington lock slot- non-glare screen is very good in rooms with a lot of windows & ambient lightCONS:- not all buttons on remote are backlit- default Auto Motion Plus (AMP) setting results in a horrible "soap opera" effect- color/picture uniformityNotes about the "Amazon experience":- I had no problems with the local delivery company, which was CEVA for me- Amazon paid all shipping costs, both ways- Amazon did not give me any hassle at any time

5Best LED
By BTideRoll
I shopped around for awhile trying to decide between plasma and LED. I went to a few stores to see the TVs in person and to compare all the different brands and features. I had seen commercials for the Sharp Quattron so I specifically wanted to check it out.Hands down the Quattron has the best, brightest, and clearest picture amongst the LED/LCDs. I looked at all the plasmas which just seemed so dull compared to the LEDs and specifically the Quattron. I wanted the LED because it weighed less, consumed less energy, was brighter, and didn't have the risk of burn in or a plasma TV hum, or the glare issue everyone is talking about. It comes down to personal preference really and the debate will never end over which technology is better. But you CAN use facts to determine which to purchase. If you don't care about viewing angle, and want a brighter picture, lower weighing and power consuming product, then you choose LED. The newest LEDs really do have good black levels compared to prior years LCDs.The Quattron's colors truly are more crisp and richer than even other LEDs that I compared it to--it was so obvious with all of them side by side (especially with scenes containing yellow). I found the colors to be pretty realistic, true, bold, and rich. Some reviews I read were saying how the colors seemed unreal or fake. You be the judge. You can calibrate this TV however you want so each to his own with regards to color. I left it on standard and everything looked great right out of the box.It isn't as "fast" on paper as some of the 240hz models (mainly those with 3d), but it doesn't need to be. I'm not worried about motion because my 3 year old regular LCD with 120hz from samsung handled sports and motion just fine, and this TV does as well. As the other reviewer was stating, this 120hz motion engine is a beast. It, at times, makes you feel like you are on the set the movement is so smooth. Sometimes it may seem artificial its so realistic/smooth as he was stating so you can turn down some of the effects depending on what you are watching. I've compared this movement to other TVs and the movement is *consistent* on this TV and has no blur, whereas on some other LED/LCDs you will notice edge blur even on regular shows and I'd hate to see those on sports.I'm upgrading from a 46" Samsung Touch of Color that was top of the line back in 2008 and this 40" Sharp blows it out of the water in every way. I'm going to be upgrading to the 46" version of the Quattron since I love it so much.Network setup was easy, it found my home wireless network. I was really impressed by the built in wi-fi. I didn't even have to configure anything. I just turned the TV on, it found my network, and immediately asked if I wanted to upgrade to the latest software/firmware. The Netflix and other apps work fine, but honestly just about EVERY device now has all these built in apps (my ps3, blue player, and now the TV). So I prefer to use the apps via my PS3 to take the burden, if any, from the TV. Sound is plenty for this TV, but you can obviously upgrade to a home theatre system. I was satisfied with the built in sound and it was plenty loud for my needs.Bottom line is this is a very high quality LED. I have never invested in a Sharp product. I've always stuck with Samsung, but this TV has won me over. It is so high quality from the TV to the remote control (love it). You see this quality in the price, and with TVs, you get what you pay for.Final verdict? I am completely satisfied with this TV. It's very thin, light weight, bright, gives an awesome picture, and has good audio. If you want this caliber of a TV, but don't need the built in Wi-Fi (for many reasons), you can save money and get the 810 series. If you want all the bells and whistles get the 830 series, and if you want everything plus the 3D, try the 835 series.

At first I couldn't believe how unbelievably clear things looked! But then it started to weird me out a bit. I felt like I was the camera man and at times it took me out of the story. Also I noticed way too much detail in animated films and they didn't quite seem as fluid as they should be. In action based movies I started noticing that certain parts were suddenly moving a slight bit faster than seemed normal. This is when I really started to investigate all the features. To make a long story short, I figured out that the setting called film mode was giving these awkward effects. Basically turn it off to have a better viewing experience. The TV looks fantastic without the added feature so it's pretty much unnecessary for most situations. Also make sure you do some color calibrations. Start with the movie AV mode and work your way from there.Just remember no TV is perfect out of the box no one setting is perfect for everyone. Play around with the colors and settings until it looks good to you. I'm extremely pleased with the purchase!

5Great LED TV for the price
By TWC
Reviews play a big part in any television purchase and since I relied heavily on them, it only made sense for me to provide a good review that could help others. Overall, once this TV is setup correctly and all calibration and adjustments are made, it is by far one of the best TVs out there in terms of picture quality, clarify and accuracy. The out of box setting is acceptable but will feel like you are at a big box electronics store. There are a few calibration settings out in various forums so just search for them, try them all and choose your pick. There is some clouding especially when displaying blacks but nothing that will stand out during a normal movie. It is not distracting enough to take your attention away from any movie. Overall blacks are great. TV is loaded with features and options starting from full calibration settings to internet apps galore. One big con is that the navigation menu/software is far from superior. In fact, it can be downright horrible at times. You will get used to it but it could be better. Internet WI-FI built in is great but getting a good signal is not the best. I ended up using a wired connection with a wireless repeater. The TV tuner is borderline. It takes a few seconds to switch between channels regardless of advancing channels or punching in the channel numbers. Like other reviewers said, do not count of advancing channels, just punch in the actual channel you are looking for. Finally, this LED TV is the best value out there. For the price, you cannot go wrong. It is clearly about $200 cheaper than the competition and Sharp makes their own LCD panels. Here are a few calibrations from various sources. I do not take credit for these calibrations.Calibrations from AVS ForumsAV Mode Movie (AVS)OPC OffBacklight 16Contrast 35Brightness 0Color -5 or -8Tint -5Sharpness 1CMS HueRed 0Yellow -20Green 16Cyan 0Blue 0Magenta 27CMS SaturationRed 10Yellow -9Green 0Cyan -5Blue -10Magenta 0CMS ValueRed 0Yellow 15Green 0Cyan 6Blue 10Magenta 0Color Gamut Range ExpandedColor Temp LowMotion Enhancement 120Quad Pixel Plus OnActive Contrast OffGamma Adjustment 0Film Mode OffDigital Noise Reduction OffMonochrome OffRange of OPC N/APower Savings OffCalibrations from CNETAV Mode MovieOPC OffBacklight 4Contrast 30Brightness 1Color 0Tint 0Sharpness 0CMS HueRed 0Yellow 4Green -5Cyan 2Blue 0Magenta 2CMS SaturationRed 0Yellow -2Green -1Cyan 0Blue -7Magenta 0CMS ValueRed 2Yellow 0Green 9Cyan 4Blue 3Magenta 0Color Gamut Range StandardColor Temp Low R Lo =11 G Lo =7 B Lo = 13 R Hi = -2 G Hi = -7 B Hi = 0Motion Enhancement 120Quad Pixel Plus OnActive Contrast OffGamma Adjustment 2Film Mode OffDigital Noise Reduction OffMonochrome OffRange of OPC AnyPower Savings Off
