1Don't waste your money
By sheltercat
**UPDATE** - I'm updating this only to say that my brother-in-law, who bought this same TV at the same time I did, just had his die as well. Same issue, it would not turn on anymore. His lasted longer than mine only because it was rarely used. In terms of hours turned on, they were probably about the same. This company makes TERRIBLE products and DOES NOT stand behind them.I got this TV in a Black Friday sale, for $250. That was, what, 6 weeks ago? And it has already died. It will not power on anymore. Total waste of money! It was nice while it lasted; picture was good, sound was OK (not great). I have since found a load of complaints online about this company's awful customer service and their refusal to fix their TV's or refund your money. I'm chalking this up to a learning experience and doing better research before I buy my next TV. I will never buy another Coby product again.

1COBY - Color? Operational? Bargain? Yeah...about that...
By Jon Shai
Like many others, bought this on Black Friday 2011. It worked for roughly 100 days, just enough to get it out of the 90 day warranty period.Worked is relative though, the screen was quite bright...uncomfortably so in a darkened room. The color was over-saturated and no amount of fiddling with the the settings would make them comfortable for regular movies. It makes cartoons look quite vibrant however, so maybe for a play room? The sound was mediocre on a good day.The best thing I can say about this unit is that the remote worked longer than the TV did without having to change the batteries once!I'm working with Visa to try and get some of my money back through the extended warranty benefit on the credit card, but the documentation required is reliant on first finding someone who can provide a written estimate on repairing a Coby...not having much luck with that either. If the negative reviews don't scare you off from buying the TV, try calling a few repair shops and letting them laugh when you ask about repairing anything Coby and see if that helps you reconsider. You've been warned.

5Excellent TV at this Price, Size and Resolution
By M. Bennett
Gave this as a gift and the recipient was VERY pleased, and still gives glowing reports of the set.Given my budget I was afraid I was going to have to settle for a 32" or 720p set, so was very pleased to find this one.I was a little hesitant given the price. At that time there weren't so many negative reviews. I certainly respect those reviewers who got defective units, and I hope they got some action to resolve it. All I can say is that the particular unit we got has been doing fine for 3 months, and made the owner VERY HAPPY.I think it's important to get 1080p in these larger screen sizes. Perhaps an audio or videophile would want a higher end set.

5Makes me feel I made the right choice.
By S. Bae
If you're in the market for a HDTV then the Samsung PN50B650 is worth a second look. Externally, the attractive Touch of Color design incorporated into the clear beveled edged glass exudes sophistication and class. Internally, the Crystal Full HD Engine and Samsung's e-panel technology translates into a blur free clear vibrant picture perfect for sports and movies alike.Truthfully I started off in the HDTV market looking for a 52" LCD panel with 1080p and 120hz specs. After a month of searching I realized that a name brand set with the above specs was out of my budget. I wasn't considering a plasma because I thought it was outdated technology, fear of image retention (IR), cost of operation, and plasma's heavier weight difference. However, as I researched more into plasmas I learned that my fears were they themselves outdated. Plasma was not outdated technology, many companies were still pouring money into plasma R&D. IR for sure is still a concern but with some simple basic precautions and use of the built in pixel shifting option, IR has become a very minor concern. This set is also Energy Star compliant using 40% less power than prior years plasmas (as per Samsung's website) and comparable to LCDs of similar size. As for weight, I wasn't too concerned because my set wasn't going on a wall. Regardless, the weight difference to a LCD is only about 15 lbs or so. Also, this set comes with an attractive stand that allows the TV to rotate for optimal viewing. The cons I have so far are: Even with the FilterBright technology incorporated into the screen, glare is still a factor. I have my set in a room with no curtains but no direct sunlight and find myself changing the brightness control at times during daylight use. While the Media 2.0 is a fantastic feature (and the reason why I highly recommend this set over the B550 for a few extra $) it can be slow at times. Lastly, the speakers on this TV are marginal. Not bad in loudness but definitely no mid range or bass as one would expect. You will eventually need something externally powered.I will not bore you with pros and cons of this set's internal specs, you can interpret them anyway you want but for a non HDTV expert that was merely trying to get the best value for the money, with great picture quality and technology (e.g. Cinema Smooth 24p frame rate), in an attractive looking TV, this Samsung was a clear choice for me. Lastly, the other plasma I was considering was the Panasonic G10. It has slightly better reviews but esthetically IMO the Samsung was a clear winner. For the non HDTV expert like myself, the image quality differences were unnoticeable. On a side note, as the post above had mentioned, standard def cable channels are pretty darn good on this set compared to my old 37" LCD.*I do not have the buzz or the pinkish hues some others claim on their sets.Update: After 7 months of use, my Samsung tv is is still going strong with no issues. Picture quality is still bright and vivid. I have either found the most balanced setting for day and night time use or my eyes have gotten used to this set because I longer find myself adjusting the picture settings. Burn in is not an issue and its not even on my mind (although I do not play video games on it). Its great having a tv with online capabilities. While I don't personally find myself using the "widgets" very often, I do appreciate the no hassle automatic software updates to the tv. The two widgets I do use on occasion are the Amazon Video on Demand and the Blockbuster Video on Demand. Either of these two features allow one to watch HD or regular quality movies streamed from their respective providers at about $3-$5 a movie for a 24 hr rental period. Not bad when I don't want to drive to the rental store. Other noteable widgets available are Twitter, YouTube, Ebay and flickr. The tv's speakers are adequate for everyday use but for movies and sporting events an externally powered speakers are advised. I use a Sony sound bar that looks and sounds great with this set. My electric bill has increased about $10 per month. The set is on for 10 plus hours a day.

5Highly recommended!
By Eternyl
Basically I've had this TV for about 3 weeks already, and wanted to share since when researching this new 2009 Samsung PN50B650 set, there were limited reviews.the specs and price on this had me at hello...3,000,000:1 Mega Contrast0.001ms pixel-response time.600HzCinema Smooth4 HDMI portsTuners: ATSC / NTSC / QAMENERGY STAR qualifiedAnynetDLNAFirst off I was always sketchy on Plasma...because of course burn in, and the whole LCD rage taking off.Basically it was a "burn in" vs "dead pixel" face off.But burn in is a non issue...sometimes the History channel will leave its logo for a few seconds, but it's not even noticeable unless you try to find it. I play PS3 games on it and it's perfect. The 4 HDMI ports are priceless....I thought it would be overkill...but add in a TivoHD, PS3, Receiver...and I'm down to 1 side HDMI input left...The 650 also has the extra internet USB adapter ($75) is very nice as well....connecting to Flickr, your network & Yahoo Weather is very nice.not built in but, so what. The TV speakers are basic and tolerable I guess, but if you are looking to get a 50" plasma, I would hope you would have a home theater in a box at least. The TOC finish is very very nice, and the touch of color really makes this set stand out...I thought I'd hate it but once it's in the house...it is nice.I think the main reason to really look at this set is the "Cinema Smooth" feature which is present on this panel....and I think only until you get to the 850 model you won't see it available. This is very nice since it delivers in the native 24p content, same frame rate as movies are recorded.and I don't have any buzzing, which some people were reporting on the AVS Forum.Well compared to my Samsung 40 40A650 LCD 120hz, which I really liked...this Plasma is a big step up.In the store the bright lights and the demo modes make the LCD stand out...but in my home setting....holy bright...it was always in movie mode...so now the kids can play games on it in, the plasma is for the living room now.The blacks and whites are more lifelike on the Plasma...although the LCD has way whiter whites...it just make it look too digital.basically I have a much better viewing angle...pic looks perfect from all angles....and it looks more "real life quality"..if that makes sense.basically I still can't get used to the "3D Soap Opera effect" on the LCD, and the speed is still nowhere to the plasma especially in sports...even with the 120hz I could catch the blur in a football. Here's my deal sealer....standard def channels, are pretty good...I can watch them again. On the LCD...standard Def..I preferred to watch an old Toshiba 36" CRT in the loft if I had to.granted it's not an 850 or 950....but the price difference is huge.at this cheap of a price, I'm thinking about getting a second...seriously it's a steal.

5very happy
By active user
This review is my personal opinion and is not sponsored by anyone. After a good amount of research I decided to get Samsung PN50B650. It's been almost 3 weeks already and I could not be more happier. I am not a videophile, but picture looks outstanding and it actually looks better then my 1 year old Sony Bravia 52inch LCD. best feature is ability to stream content from your PC or USB memory stick or HDD. so far, I have not discovered format that it does not handle.

5Very nice tv
By David Perry
I purchased this TV about 2 months ago and am incredibly pleased with it. When comparing it to other TV's at the store it seemed a little dimmer but had a cleaner picture. Once it was in my living room it looked absolutely great. The picture is viewable when seated or sitting on the floor at about 160 degrees and remains clear and bright even during the day time (and I have a skylight right above the TV).

The only complaint I have is that if you're eye level is about 2 feet above the screen, the picture almost completely disappears, but since I usually sit while watching tv, this is not an issue.

I also use the tv with my XBox and Plastation 2 and with the composite video connections it looks great.

5EXCELENT Television, Picture that rivals/bests more $$$ sets
By A Customer
First off, the first reviewer is either completely lieing, or bought a used/grey market television from a shady vendor. This television came COMPLETLY assembled, and with no setup problems whatsoever. I literally set the box down, cut it open slid the top off, shoved the set back into the place it resides now, hooked everything up and it worked FLAWLESSLY. I would bet on the first reviewer not actually owning this television due to the extreme nature of the misinformation he put out there.

Rest assured, the picture quality on this set is second to none in its price range, and in my (and from what I have read, many others) eye it has a better picture than sets costing mor in many cases. The setup is very intuitive, anyone with half a brain can get this thing up and running in no time.I had looked at several TV's and after narrowly avoiding the sony mistake, I am VERY glad I went with this model.

5The First Reviewer Has the Wrong System in Mind
By MARK SCOTT MOSTY
After reading these two reviews, I felt I had to try to set this record straight: I completely agree with the second reviewer. This is an EXCELLENT TV. I had absolutely no problems setting up or using mine and it came completely assembled. As the second reviewer said, all you do is take it out of the box, plug it in and it fired up. Setup involved answering a few on-screen questions and that was it. I too have been impressed with the quality of the picture and feel that I made a smart buy with this TOSHIBA. I think the first reviewer either was taken by the local Rex store or he has this 51" mixed up with some other model. Nothing he described matched my experience with this TV. Believe the second guy....both of us had basically the same results.

41st Review of Curtis LCD4299A - Great Bargin in a 3D HDTV
By Deano
Can't touch 42 inch 1080p 3D at this price! Found it on new years for $450. But with no reviews that were out there on it, it's a risk to buy sight unseen. But not really once you have. I thought some of you might be out there looking for someone who had something, anything to say about this specific product.Curtis is a little known mfr, but their other sets get good reviews where it counts for 3D, in the display. (OBTW, they're NOT the phoenix of Curtis Mathes, an exceptionally high quality mfr that went under in the eighties). You'll want to read DisplayMate's 3D shootout review on Passive 3D superiority to the earlier (and still market dominant) Active 3D. [...]Bought a refurbished Samsung BDC5500 3D player on the same order (yes, it is a pattern you're seeing here). Hooked up both & was watching 3D blu-ray in under an hour last nite for only $530 combined.PROs: Price, bright clear display, price, 1080p 3D, price, 42in, price, 3D glasses same as Theaters (wink wink)CONs: So-So audio, Stand can't pivot, cheap Remote (I know cheap), And no good BDC5500 remote code for Curtis TVs, "35" gets ON-OFF control only. Lastly (from my brief experience) the enormous 16" x 23.5" bracket spacing rules out many adjustable wall mounts. I'll have to fab my own.I've obviously only barely tapped into this TV's feature set, but it did just fine scanning my broadcast TV channels (don't need cable just to watch news), and the HDTV stations I flipped thru come in looking just fine. And yes, as you probably guessed I use bottom-feeder $15/mo DSL (at least I'm not dial-up) so I can't tell you how it does on internet streaming.Other disclaimers - Never saw a Curtis TV before unboxing mine, so I can't give you a fully informed account of side-by-side viewing competition on a retailer's sales floor. But I'm a Samsung fanboy when it comes to displays (there, I said it) with 4 of their monitors (up to 27") gracing various computers in my house. And nothing with this Curtis HDTV's screen disappoints.Oh, ignore the occasional claim you may run across that 3D Blu-Ray players are either `Active' or `Passive' and must be matched to an HDTV of the same technology. That's bunk. This Passive 3D HDTV works just fine with my Samsung player whose MFR is leading the Active 3D camp. Google it if you still feel hesitant. Now let's be realistic on viewing expectations. Breathtaking movie theater 3D awesomeness you ain't gonna get (at least if like me you sit close to the front). At this screen size it's like viewing a 3D scene through a wide window. But it IS bright & clear 3D, has visual depth, and gives just that much more of an immersive experience over just your basic Blu-Ray.And did I mention price?!? For the cost of normal 1080p HiDef, you're getting great 3D for free!UPDATE 2/14/12 - Good news. The Logitech Harmony 300i Universal Remote Control works with this TV. You can find a refurbished model for $17 bucks online. Since the programming codes for each individual device are downloaded from Logitech's website, I'd wager any of their universal remote control models will do the trick. This overcomes the most major of my concerns. I did find a wall mount large enough to fit the super-wide bracket holes. It's extra-heavy duty made for TVs up to 65" and weighing 4 times as much, costing double what should otherwise be necessary for a 42" TV. But I'll never have to worry about an earthquake shaking it off it's brackets.Paired with a better remote, I'll up my rating for this TV to 4.5 stars. The built-in audio is still sub-par compared to the other strengths of this TV, but if you're playing the audio through a decent sound system, there's no reason not to have this TV as the centerpiece of a modest home theater system.

5Does everything you could possibly expect for the price
By Auroran
I bought this TV from Amazon, but with a price match to CompUSA. It arrived last week, and so far, it works perfectly--as well as I could possibly expect for the under-$500 price I paid. The passive 3D technology (using lightweight polarized glasses) is generally both impressive and unobtrusive.a) The one true 3D Blu-Ray movie I have watched so far is Disney's Christmas Carol. 3D effects were impressive but not eye-popping. However, I think that was Disney's deliberate intention--to avoid exaggerated 3D effects that might nauseate children and give adults headaches over an hour-and-a-half span.b) 3D (side-by-side) YouTube videos (streamed from the Internet to my Panasonic BDT215P Blu-Ray player) look good. The TV automatically recognizes side-by-side video and displays it in 3D.c) 3D photos and videos on my HTC Evo 3D phone play reasonably well, in 3D, on the TV via a simple MHL adapter. The quality is lower because the pixel resolution is that of the phone's own screen (960x540) rather than the source (1920x1080 photo, 1280x720 video).d) 3D photos and videos from my Evo 3D play better when transferred to a USB stick and plugged into the Panasonic Blu-Ray player. The Panasonic sends side-by-side to the TV, which (again, very conveniently) automatically interprets it as 3D. The only glitch in this procedure is that 3D videos must be remuxed into the .mkv format by a tool such as mkvmerge (and with the obscure option Disable Header Compression enabled).e) The TV offers 2D-to-3D conversion for anything it displays, from DVDs to broadcast television. This added-3D effect is generally rather minor, but I will probably use it when I can.In buying this low-priced 3D TV, I consciously made a few tradeoffs:- I didn't need LED backlighting. The primary advantage of LED backlighting is to make the TV lighter and thinner. This might have been nice, but I was not willing to pay considerably extra for it.- I didn't need any Internet capability in the TV itself. My Panasonic BDT215P player has all the Internet capability I need right now; and as the technology progresses, I can eventually replace a small $130 player much more easily than a large $480 TV.- I didn't need a name brand. I figure that passive 3D technology (for 42" TVs) is probably manufactured in only a couple places on earth right now, so I suspect that my TV was built in the same place that produces Vizio or LG 3D TVs. Interestingly, RCA Televisions Canada sells this same LCD4299A as their own, although I could easily believe that Curtis simply bought the RCA name in Canada. (I don't think there is a "real" RCA anymore, just a virtual brand.)

4Pretty good quality for a very good price.
By AJ McLaughlin
Let me start by saying that my television came promptly and in one piece, two days after ordering. I was very happy about that, and even happier that it wasn't busted up into fragments during shipping- so order with confidence. As for the television itself, the picture is pretty amazing. Some say you can't really tell the difference between 780 and 1080 with televisions of this size, but comparing it to my roommates television of the same size, mine looks clearer and crisper. No dead pixels so far and everything looks sharp in HD. It is also worth noting that the television turns on very quickly, without any beeping noises or space sounds. The sound quality is not bad at all. There is an option to simulate surround sound on the tv's speakers, which in my opinion, made it even better. The volume is good enough for me, and my bedroom is pretty large and cavernous. The TV also has enough HDMI ports for all my gadgets: cable box, XBOX, Wii, my laptop- they all fit. This is the only knock I have, and the reason it didn't receive 5 stars: When I went to attach the television stand to the bottom of the TV, the screws were absolutely obnoxious to get into the holes. They did not fit properly or easily and the screws were easily stripped. The end result is that, although it is firmly attached to the stand, it is wobbly and makes me pretty nervous about someone bumping it. If you plan to wall mount, don't worry about it- but I was unhappy with the way the stand was constructed.Still, a highly recommended purchase. The page doesn't say, but the tv comes with a 1-year limited warranty if you're concerned. I am not. I'm happy with my new TV!

1No customer service
By John P. Thesz
Owned my tv for right at 6 months when it failed. It was under warranty, so I called and the tech showed up the next day. Great! He orders 2 boards for it, they take a week. Ok, fine. He replaces parts, does not fix, and tells me it is the panel itself, which is no longer made and I have to get a replacement. Hmmm. He forwards my case to On Corporation (the company that actually makes RCA tvs) and I wait. Coming up on 2 weeks now, not a word. I call the number given to me by the tech, answering machine. I leave daily messages. Nothing. Wow.

5Sturdy Starter HDTV
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
My last HDTV, a Dynex, had problems with murky color in the earth tones. Because of this, half-lit scenes in my favorite shows tended to become unreadable. It made watching suspense shows taxing, but I thought it was just a characteristic of HD. This unit proves that's not so. It has bright, clear colors, and even darkened rooms and caves have enough definition that I can follow the action. It also has clear enough sound that I can enjoy my favorite cable music channels.Several previous reviewers have given this unit bad rates because of their run-ins with customer service. I can't speak to that, because I've had nothing but good luck with this unit, and have had no need to contact customer service. Therefore I can say, with a certain level of comfort, that I approve of this television. It does everything I need a TV to do, and it does it well, without running up my electric bills. Definitely a good, inexpensive TV for families, businesses, and dorms.

Panasonic’s commitment to sustainability and producing products that are ecologically sound is evidenced in the 100,000 hour life span of the Plasma Display panel and the lack of lead or mercury in the panels. Thanks to a newly designed phosphor process and rear panel process, Panasonic's plasma panels last for up to 100,000 hours before the brightness decreases by half. That's more than 30 years of viewing 8 hours a day. Plus with Eco Mode, Panasonic TV's turn off and adjust brightness depending on the VIERA's operating status. 5*IMPORTANT* SETUP INFO! PREVENT HEADACHES
By Nbot
Read Here! Important Setup Info to ensure you don't ruin the screen, picture calibration (default is for energy savings, not good pic), $19 Active 3D glasses, $30 wall mounts, removing ads & youtube settings.Hey all, if you are reading this, means you already want this plasma, or started off like I did, confident that you were looking for a new edge-lit LED tv, but after days of research shocked to see yourself purchasing a plasma! The better picture, for 1/2 the cost, with plasma-ish issues (heat, burn-in, etc) now mostly a thing of the past, makes you wonder why people are snapping up LED's (I got this for $699 at a local box shop, would've done Amazon at same price but didn't want to wait).Note: *3D GLASSES* You do NOT need to spend $50 each on glasses. Last year the major brands agreed on a universal active 3d standard via bluetooth. You can buy the new $19 Samsung SSG-4100GB glasses here on Amazon(Samsung SSG-4100GB 3D Active Glasses 2012 Models - Black), and they work great on this TV (I have 2 pairs). If you don't believe this, google "3D active glasses CNET" and find their article confirming this. I'm sure other active glasses will soon be available as well. CNET has a good article on the difference between Active & Passive pros & cons as well if you're still on the fence; IMO, the 3D on this TV with the $20 Samsung's is awesome.Anyways, you know the pros/cons already of this TV (if not, I put my PROS/CONS as a comment/reply below); this article is to save you 10 hours of reading on how to set it up and enjoy it. The following suggestions should apply to any UT50 or Panny Viera plasma (except the calibrations are only for the 50" I would assume).1. BREAK-IN PERIOD: Even though this is mostly a thing of the past with newer plamas, you'll see everyone with an opinion on this topic, yet its clear that plasmas are still *NOT* yet IDIOT PROOF (just use easy rules below & you'll be fine). You'll see the plasma gurus of years past insist that you need to run a video file of "slides" repeatedly for 100 hours minimum to evenly break-in the screen, or you'll end up with "IR" (image retention) & "burn in" images on your display. Even though newer plasma tech is now much more forgiving, for the first couple weeks (100 hours) you should *not* play the same video game (fixed icons/menu), or watch TV in a 4:3 format (that has black bars on the side) or wide-screen(black bars on top) or the same TV station (NBC with their logo on the bottom right). There's a pretty good chance you'll end up with something burned into the screen, and you won't be happy, and your dog or wife will hate you. You'll hate yourself. Google "Cnet Do I Need to Break In New Plasma" for a more informed article on this, but basically, stick to 16:9 video (fills the entire screen), if it doesn't, hit the "FORMAT" button on the remote to FILL the screen so you don't have black bars, and don't stick on channels with static logos (ESPN with the news ticker! NG with their logo, etc) for hours on end. ALSO, apparently a good idea to keep your CONTRAST settings below 100% for the first 100 hours or so (80 or below is the word, I'm a risk taker, think I'm at 85). Just watch full-screen content without stationary logos during the break-in period as much as possible, or don't stay stuck on any one channel/logo/ticker. Me, I just put a DVD/on-demand movie on repeatedly when I was doing other stuff around the house (find the longest movie you've got). If you are reading this after the fact & already hate yourself, go to Youtube and google "fix plasma" etc there are some videos that may be able to burn it out, or apparently Disney made some "WOW CD" that is a plasma staple, google it, lots of people useit, I can't comment on it not having used it.2. BREAK-IN PERIOD (2nd): There is a built in "Anti-Image Retention" scrolling bar (under Menu>>Setup>>Anti Image Retention). I run this after watching a movie or say at halftime & afterwards of watching an NFL game (just being paranoid probably, but its easy so why not). At least initially...if you go onto Youtube there is a 5 minute video clip called "Plasma HDTV Burn-In Clip" (starts with pink spirals). There's a link on that page you can download the video & put it on a USB stick and then tell your TV to run it in a loop overnight for a few nights (if you were motivated) as others suggest, I decided I'd just run the scrolling bars in between viewings, from what I've read the new plasma tech is forgiving enough as long as you don't push it too far.3. CALIBRATION: I would put this 1st, but figure its more important not to screw up the screen. The TV comes in an "Eco" friendly setting so they can get that $21/year energy cost sticker. This is a garbage picture. You'll end up spending $46/year or so according to CNET in reality once you adjust the TV for a good picture (and I'm assuming your getting the plasma for a good picture, not to save $25/year on electricity). You can google "CNET TC-P50UT50 CALIBRATION" and find their suggested calibration settings, or if you really want to get into it, google "AVSFORUM TC-P50UT50 CALIBRATION" and there's a 20 page thread titled "The Official Panasonic UT50 Settings/Issues Thread", and the 2 main contributors (PathofNeo & anikun07) suggest similar but slightly different settings than CNET. If you jump to Page 9 (post 250) of that thread, you'll find anikun07's settings for both CINEMA mode and also 3D MODE. If you want to know "why" these settings are best (including why you should use CINEMA mode, not CUSTOM mode for better blacks), read the first 9 pages. I'll cheat & post anikun07's current settings below for you, but if he changes them in the future I wouldn't know, you'd have to check the thread. I didn't bother getting into the custom RGB color settings, just the main easy-access settings.4. REMOVE ADVERTISEMENTS / DISABLE ADS (seen on startup & in the Internet menu): For the ads displayed on startup, go to MENU>>SETUP>>ADVANCED SETTINGS>>VIERA CONNECT BANNER (and set to OFF). For the ads displayed as one of the apps, just unselect that app from being displayed in the app/store settings (uncheck it). If you are confused how to move an app from the 1st screen to the 3rd, there's a FAQ on Panasonic's site for this TV that explains the steps in detail.5. YOUTUBE: The app allows you to link your phone or tablet to your TV (so you don't have to painfully type in search terms using that remote from the 90's). It gives you a PIN to enter into your device, then whatever you type into the device & hit play, ends up playing on your TV, pretty neat.6. VIDEO SETTINGS FOR 3D, NORMAL TV & INTERNET APPS (NETFLIX ETC) ARE ALL SEPARATE: These are all controlled separately, so once you find the right settings for your cinema mode, you have to play a 3D movie, then open up the picture menu again and make the settings per below, and same for Internet Apps, go into youtube or netflix & edit the picture settings there as well (I used same settings for both TV & internet apps). I guess each input has its own setting, so HDMI1 & HDMI2 you have to make the different picture settings (see comments below page 3)7. MOTION SMOOTHER (Soap Opera Effect): Everyone will tell you the first thing you need to do is disable the digital manipulation of the video, turn off the "Motion Smoother" (see full settings below). Basically, you'll turn off all digital manipulation, as they (according to the experts) just bog down the picture quality. This is confusing to me; why would *all* of the TV manufacturers spend money adding digital manipulations of the picture that no experts want? Perhaps the features fluff up some settings/images, while ruining others, I don't know enough to speculate, however even on LED's everyone says to turn off these digital "enhancements" as well.8. WALL MOUNTS: You do *not* need to spend $100-200 for a wall mount! Only $28! Check out "Cheetah Mounts APTMM2B Flush Tilt Dual Hook (1.3" from wall) Flat Screen TV Wall Mount Bracket for 32-65 inch Plasma, LED, and LCD TVs Up To VESA 700x400 and 165lbs, Including 10' Braided High Speed with Ethernet HDMI Cable and 3-Axis Magnetic Bubble Level" here on Amazon, $27.99 (Prime) and its 1.5" from the wall & includes tilt (my old mount had swivel but I never used it). Holds up to 165lbs, nearly 5 stars from 2,000+ reviews, nice (remember to drill into a stud!). Also, if you tilt the TV downwards a smidgen, then the overhead room light doesn't reflect on the screen when you are sitting down, if glare's an issue at night, cheap fix.1/21/13 Updates:9. Android App: There is a Viera droid app in the Play store (can't comment on Apple IOS), works on tablets & phones. However, as of 1/21/13 its pretty annoying that you can't use the app to "type" into the search bars on Netflix or Hulu (why else would I use the app over the remote?). Youtube's sync let's you type in the search bar, hopefully they fix this bug. I note that there are bluetooth mini-keyboards that you can buy for ~$40, I haven't looked into this yet though. For now I'll probably make due with the clunky non-qwerty remote.10. I really wish the remote could be programmed to control my cable box as well; I'm not sure I want to spend $100 for a Harmony remote, and I'm not sure if a Harmony remote would handle all the custom internet functions anyways (navigating the Viera Netflix & Hulu apps etc), looks like I might be stuck with a few remotes for now at least; the Android app & non-programmable remote are really my only (minor) complaints on this TV, which is still a 5-star bargain at the price I got it at though.1/23/13 Update:11. Wireless Dongle: if you don't have an ethernet cable nearby, instead of buying the Panny wireless adapter Panasonic TY-WL20U Wireless Adapter for Panasonic 2012 Internet Ready TVs, something to consider instead would be one of these "Powerline" adapters that are slightly less in cost, but something you could use for other purposes later on, and/or be able to add other adapters to your house for other internet devices (I did a very QUICK search, these ZyXEL adapters seemed the best bang for the buck (Logitech's HD Powerline 200a is $105), there could be a better brand/price you'd have to check but these are $43 on Prime currentlyZyXEL PLA401v3 HomePlug AV 200 Mbps Powerline Wall-plug Adapter (Starter Kit - 2 units):Here are Anikun07's 2D & 3D calibration settings from the AVSforum thread I mentioned above (apparently these settings target a neutral D65 coloring, you may find you like TV's with unnatural heavy red hues, to each their own?):***2D CINEMA MODE*** (not custom, not vivid, not standard)______________Contrast: +90Brightness: +49Color: +48Tint: 0Sharpness: 0Color Temp: Warm 2Color Mgmt.: OffC.A.T.S.: OffVideo NR: Off______________Aspect AdjustmentsScreen Format: FullHD Size: Size 2H Size: Size 1______________HDMI Settings (*edit, CNET says the following, which is what I did as well: -- HDMI settings: [no change from default]. 5Awesome TV for the $$$
By btuck
I have had this TV for about a couple weeks now and so far it has been amazing! The plasma picture quality is FAR better than LED or LCD in this price range; the only problem is the screen glare in bright rooms (you will see refections if you are viewing during the day if the curtains are not closed). In my opinion the picture quality is well worth the trouble of getting off the couch and closing the curtains.I read previous reviews of the screen being dim. For one thing, the worst thing you can do while shopping for TV is to look at multiple display TVs. The reason behind this being, most TVs that are on display are in something tech geeks call 'Torch Mode' (basically the brightest and prettiest TV gets the most attention). This is deceptive because when you view the TV in your home you will not have another TV in the room to compare the picture to. But if the picture on this TV is not bright enough for you, go to settings and simply change the picture mode to 'Vivid' or 'Custom'.One more thing you MUST do to get the best picture out of this TV is: go to advance settings and find 'Motion Smoother'. When you've found it, turn it OFF! This feature makes the picture look fast and as if it were filmed by a cheap camera. To get the full cinema experience it is imperative to turn this OFF.Overall, this TV is the flagship in its class for picture quality and is an extremely good deal.

4Very nice, for my first HD/Plasma, but....
By NscaleMike
Purchased this in May of 2012, after reading numerous reviews, mostly here on Amazon from fellow consumers and a few from CNet.com . It's been a really nice TV...best one I've ever owned, wonderful colors and sharp images. Watching Blu-ray movies has been a real treat, using a Sony PS-3. The built in sound from the TV is perfect for the size of our living room. I will probably upgrade at some point to a better sound system such as a soundbar or similar. We use the preloaded Netflix all the time, great feature. I still don't know why Panasonic did not build in a wireless(WiFi) feature to this TV...most other brands like LG do....I had to purchase one separately from an online retailer in NY, they were extremely fast and cheap too. The "White Glove service" provided that delivered the TV was great...they'd call the day before the scheduled delivery date. They set it up and removed all the packing material. Now the "but"....After almost of 5 months of watching...roughly 6-8hrs a day, Sunday night during the fourth quarter of the Packers Saints game the TV stopped working....The red LED in the front of the TV started to blink...so I unplugged the TV...waited a few mins...plugged it back in...Nothing but more blinking....in this case it blinks 8 times, pauses, then blinks 8 times, pauses..etc etc...Looked this up online..and apparently this is a problem that has occurred before...other have noted such online. Panasonic was closed on Sunday...I did purchase an extended warranty through Canopy, but they said to contact Panasonic first. I did Monday the 1st of October...they seemed helpful and understanding...but It won't be until Friday the 5th before someone locally here in Vegas could fix it.S I G H...I will update as necessary...***Update....Ok the TV went out on Sunday night the 30th of September. Monday the 1st, 6 a.m., I contacted Panasonic customer service, I spoke with a Technician, who gave me a case# and arranged to have a local (Las Vegas)TV repair place come out and fix it on Friday the 5th. I called the repair place on Thursday to confirm they were coming out as scheduled, they said they weren't, because on the 1st, Monday, after I called Panasonic, they notified the local repair shop of the repair order, but the needed part was on a "3 week" back-order!! My blood pressure started to get a bit higher at this point. I called Panasonic right away, trying to find out why wasn't I notified of this delay. I got the usual "We're sorry"..."I apologize" etc etc...Inserted within the owners manual for the TV is a welcome letter, welcoming the new customer to the "VIERA Concierge" program. It's for owners of 46" and larger flat panel tv's...."As a Panasonic flat panel TV owner you are now entitled to a variety of free privileges that will make owning our new television even more of a pleasure. It's our way to give you the experience and peace of mind you expect from Panasonic. Panasonic VIERA Concierge adds value to your premium TV experience with services like: Expert Toll-Free Hotline and live web chat support from Panasonic's Nationally recognized customer support center. In-home priority service scheduling and follow-up if your television needs to be serviced (Usually fixed in about two days). COMPLIMENTARY LOANER TVs AVAILABLE FOR IN-WARRANTY REPAIRS BY CONTACTING PANASONIC"That last line I put in caps to emphasize my frustrations with these folks. So after several calls....so I could get a clear answer on when my tv will be repaired I started asking for a complimentary TV, since my TV was apparently going to be out of service for at least 3 weeks more....they told me to contact my local tv repair office for one, I said why? They said they will provide one...I called the repair shop, they started to laugh a bit...and said they only repair tv's and don't provide loaners. Called back Panasonic, they stated they didn't have any TV's to loan...I re-read them , word for word the VIERA Concierge program...I expressed to them my extreme dissatisfaction with their department. Once again...I heard how apologetic they were. I told them, I didn't want any more apologies... I just needed to speak to someone here in the USA, who can actually make a decision and either get my TV fixed or a loaner ASAP!....After being on hold for another 10 mins...they finally give me a number to an office in New Jersey. (201) 348-7755...I was able to speak with a "Bill" in their Executive Department. He seemed sincerely concerned about my case. Upgraded it to a Field Service Technician level, and said Panasonic really tries to fix their TV's within the time frame stated in the Concierge letter. They don't always have loaners available, but would have one sent to me by early next week, if the replacement part didn't come in first. I told him, the Customer service center should have got the ball rolling once they discovered the replacement part was on a 3 week back order, they should have called me, gave me an update, got the process in motion to get me a loaner. I contacted my the local repair shop, on Friday the 5th...the manager there said..."I don't know what you said or who you spoke to...but they're overnighting the replacement part". Monday was a holiday, So they came out Tuesday promptly, installed a new "SS Board" as well as replaced several screws with upgraded ones for their boards. The new screws appeared almost identical, but the washers are spring loaded, compared to the factory installed ones. The TV works just great now....It's a shame my blood pressure had to boil a bit...and I had to make so many calls to their CS department and finally a corporate office here in the US. The part was a re-manufactured board, that they used to replace the one I had.
