5Great TV
By James Van Fossentrustee
After searching for the past year, I deceided to go with a Sharp 45" LCD. Then I saw C/C had dropped the Hitachi 55" to $3149.00, much lower than I could get even online. Went to look and was blown away by the pic. It was a no brainer, the Sharp for $3,000.00 (Costco) was good, but couldn't pass up the Hitachi for less. Only gripe was no stand. While Hitachi may not sell the stand with the TV, retailers should keep one or two in stock. Found one at a local Hi Def TV store for $399.00. High price, but wife didn't like the idea of a wall mount. Now to the TV. Great Hi-def pic. Standard cable fair to good when streached to fit screen. I usually don't run any 4:3 programming to avoid burn in. Sound from built in speakers better than I expected, but also have a 500w kenwood surround sound systen for backup. I like that you can plug a sub-woofer into the TV, but had to turn mine down as bass was overboosted. Standard DVD and VCR very good using high quality cables, but plan to upgrade the DVD in near future. The remote is actually very easy to use for TV, but lacks functions when controlling my digital cable box or stereo. I decided to use the cable remote instead. If using over the air or basic cable, TV remote works fine. Right now, all cable boxes and accessories are hooked up with monster cable, but have an HDMI cable on order, cheaped on-line than in store. I expect even better pic quality with this setup. The only bad experience with this purchase was a pushy salesman, who was pushing any TV but the Hitachi, and an expensive warranty. I would recommend any who like large plasma units to take a look at this, or the other 55" Hitachi units. A great TV, that even my wife likes.

4Great tv for its price
By Mohammedi Padaria
ProsThe picture quality is unbelieveble. HD quality is second to none. It is probably the sharpest picture I have seen (researched plasma/lcd tvs for over 2 years). It has lots of inputs for all devices and the setup out of the box is pretty easy. Picture in Picture quality is great.TV comes with a WIPE functionality. This allows you to clean the plasma screen and prevent any burns. (Usually available with much more expensive models)ConsRemote is bit antiquated for the price of the tv. Picture in picture works only if one of the feeds is HD. Base needs to be bought (add $200 to the price.)Bottom line - I would recommend buying this tv. Shop around and you should be able to find it for less than $2500.

5Best 55 inch Plasma Ever!
By brent975link
After a year of research and several visits to BB and CC, I have come to the conclusion that Panasonic 50 inch plasma is the best there is-- until I saw this Hitachi 55 inch. Being the brand-conscious buyer, I wanted my first plasma to be a Panasonic, a Samsung or a Pioneer. But I couldn't get my eyes off this TV. Side by side with the Panasonic 50 inch, the Hitachi looked bigger, sharper and richer in color vibrance. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me but my brother had the same observation. What sealed the deal was the price; for 3 grand, this TV was a steal (the Panasonic was $600 less but then again, it was also 5 inches smaller); the stand or wall mount is sold separately (I got the stand for $150). This TV is a dream come true! It has tons of cool features like the anti-reflective glass screen which takes away the glare when watching daytime shows. The picture mode can be automatically programmed to shift from day to night mode with a timer. Another cool feature is the zoom; I could remove the black bars when watching 16:9 widescreen DVD and HD-DVD formats (which practically prevents premature burn-in). It's a 720p/1080i resolution TV (1080p may be better but all HDTV broadcasts nowadays are still 720p; it may take several years before real 1080p shows arrive-- when that time comes, it's probably time to buy another plasma). I have watched Discovery HD theater and boy, it was eye-popping! Watching football on ESPN-HD feels like being there. My HD-DVDs, especially 'Superman Returns' and 'The Last Samurai' were totally out of this world! I can't believe I have waited this long to buy this plasma TV. For the quality, picture and price, nothing beats Hitachi!

5Great Deal on great Plasma
By Robert
Just picked up my second Panasonic plasma and couldn't be happier. This TV has great picture and just enough bells and whistles for my needs: 3 HDMI inputs and an SD card reader for viewing photos. This TV does not have anti-reflective glare (not needed in a dark home theater room), USB ports (who cares), LAN connection (I already have streaming Netflix through Roku and Wii), 3D capable (I personally don't want that, you may), or a fourth HDMI input (don't need it, you may). The picture is identical to any other model in the series, just significantly less expensive because it omits the aforementioned features. So just decide what inputs you need and pay for the model that provides just that and nothing extra. I have had my 42 inch for three years and it is perfect and I expect the same quality and reliability out of this one too!!!

4Excellent with only 1 flaw
By HOOKEM
This unit is an excellent value for the money. The one flaw is the speaker positioning. The speakers are located on the bottom and point down towards the floor. This is problematic because if you place this in a entertainment center or cabinet it creates an echo or muffles the sound. Probably much better mounted on the wall. However, overall the picture is great and for under $800 you can't beat it.

5Great TV
By Islah
I bought this TV last weekend from Bestbuy on the thanksgiving sale for only 700 dollar. Couple of things that i didn't like about this tv is the motion judder and the reflection, nothing much can be done about the reflection unless make the room a bit dark in the day time and if you are looking at the picture then you kinda just forget about the reflection. Motion judder can be minimized a bit by turning the video NR and motion nr. I noticed that after the break in period there is much less motion judder now. I also bought two other tv's for comparison both philips, one 120hz led and the other was 240hz lcd. both of these tvs did not come to par to the picture quality of Plasma. The PNM of plasma is a joke. In order to make the motion smooth you will see bricks around the images. Anyway bottom line I like my tv a lot. I still cannot find a 50' 1080p tv for the price i paid. The picture comes out very natural, where LCD's and LED's have to process the picture which makes it very fake looking. Plasma shows the images as natural as they are. I would highly recommend the higher moder of this tv, the S2 which has the anti reflective/glare screen. i would buy the tv in a heart beat if my wife would let me.

5Easily the best TV of 2007 for the price
By J. D. Robinson
Moving to a new house and am buying two new flat panels for living room and bedroom. I had assumed that LCD was the best technology currently available, but after a lot of careful research, found out about the new Samsung Plasmas, the 54/64 series in 50" or 42" sizes.WOW! This is an amazing set. I am very picky about what I buy, but at the same time try to spread my $ around so that I can have decent components for everything. This TV is in the sweet spot for bang for the buck. I thought that I would really be missing out by not having a 1080p TV, but this thing is truly amazing.I am running an HD Tivo from DirecTV (HDMI), an Xbox 360 (component), PS3 (component) and Wii (component). They are all amazing, and for the money I saved on not getting 1080p or LCD, I am able to get a 4254 for the bedroom. The two main differences between this unit (5064) and the other model (5054) is that this one has a slightly stronger anti-glare shield and can view photos off of a USB stick. If you have a 360, you won't likely use this functionality anyway. The stronger anti-glare shield is great if you are putting this in a bright room with lots of windows, but if there is not going to be glare on the tv, go with the 54 series because the glass is clearer due to less heavy glare shield. I will say that the glare shield is really great - my old rear projection Sony reflected every light in the room, this plasma doesn't reflect anything even with every light in the room on.The fit and finish is top notch, plenty of inputs including 3 HDMI and a PC input. Take care to break your plasma in properly, don't watch too much SD tv with black bars during the first couple hundred hours, at least stretch the picture. This TV is best suited for HD input, it looks fine on Standard Def, but that is not what it was designed for.If you are in the market for a TV, and your price point is in the "just below $2000" and you want a 50" this is your TV. Smaller size/price point? Go with the 4254 or 4264 from Samsung. You won't regret it.- Update (2/14/2008): with the price hovering just over the $1,000 mark, this thing is an even better buy. 8 months later and no complaints. -Josh- Update (2/8/2011): Power supply blew. TV was still chugging along until that happened. The good news is that I found the power supply from an online parts shop for $70 and instructions from a forum and downloaded the tv service manual in PDF form so plan to fix it myself. Paying Samsung certified tech to do it would be about $400, not worth it for a 4 year old TV.

5My Thoughts on the HPT-5064
By J. Carter
The HPT-5064 is one of CNET's top 5 rated plasma HDTVs as of this writing (9/13/07), and with good reason. This TV has all the major features at the right price point in today's market, making it a strong contender on your shopping list. I shopped every LCD, DLP and Plasma in this price range, and the HPT-5064 emerged time and time again as the #1 choice.Let's get something out of the way first - you're probably going back and forth between 1080p and 720p TVs, trying to figure out if 1080p is worth the premium. Quick calculation - at this size (50"), you're supposed to be sitting at least 10 ft. back. At that distance, your eyes won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. So, my advice - buy this TV. If you can't sit at least 8-10" back, if you've got the patience of a monk and are willing to wait for 1080p prices to fall to 720p prices, or if you're one of those people who never buy anything for fear that there's something "better" out there, go for 1080p. Then again, you may get hit by a truck tomorrow, and 1080p isn't going to do you much good then, is it? Your headstone will say:While He Was Waiting For 1080pGot Hit By A Semi Going 73Like something out of Disney's Haunted Mansion. You know what I'm talking about. Also replace "He" with "She" if you are a girl. I would have put "He/She", but that's a strange construct with all kids of linguistic baggage that I avoided in the name of brevity...even wit, if you could call it that. The best advice for technology is, "Don't buy the hottest thing - buy yesterday's hottest thing". Why? Because technological upgrades aren't exponential, they're incremental. You're paying for a lot more than you're getting at the time. Meanwhile, prices on yesterday's hot thing are dropping faster than the housing market. Look at Apple. You buy something, and as the UPS guy is ringing your doorbell, they cut the price in half and release a new model. Apple's cool, though.Enough philosophy. Here's what I love about this HDTV:* Fantastic, natural-looking picture with no macroblocking, ghosting or blurring. Coming off a 32" LCD that suffered from all those problems, I'm very happy. Colors are perfect. Blacks are black (not CRT black, but CRTs aren't 3" deep either). Contrast is amazing. Feed this thing high-quality off-air HD channels, your Xbox 360 or PS3, HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray, or 480p DVDs, and you'll be impressed. Standard def, as expected, looks like standard def stretched out over a 50" screen. If that's your thing, go for it, but I don't suggest it. This thing thrives on a diet of steady HD content. Go to your parent's house if you want to watch...I dunno. I was going to say Sesame Street or Antiques Roadshow, but even public television comes in HD now, and your parents probably have an HDTV, so my joke has no punchline. Go to your parent's house anyway, your mom misses you and will probably make you a sandwich.* 3 individual picture adjustments for each input with three modes - Dynamic, Standard and Movie. Dynamic (also known as "torch" mode or "store" mode) will make your eyes bleed, just don't do it. Standard is great for brightly lit daytime viewing (though tends toward the blue spectrum), while Movie features the greatest amount of adjustable values, and fits the bill as the default setting for discriminating viewers (see CNET's website for settings that are just about perfect). Any adjustments you make to the three modes are kept in memory for each input. It's a tweaker's dream. Just don't drive your significant other crazy trying to determine if "48" or "49" is the best color value. (P.S. - it's 48...or is it?)* Burn-in protection. Go ahead, admit it. You're worried about burn in. You've read the reviews that say that burn-in is overrated, but then, right there on the forum, man, is a dude who took a picture of his brand new plasma with the CNN logo permanently etched in. If you're worried, Samsung threw in a few modes that can help you prevent and erase burn-in. I take the whole burn-in issue with a grain of salt, from both sides. Just like with your old CRT, you shouldn't display any still images for an excessive amount of time (multiple hours), but watching a letter-boxed movie one night isn't going to ruin your television. Just use common sense and don't leave Bioshock or your TiVo on pause for 6 hours with the TV on. And run the modes every so often, it can't hurt.* Style - this TV looks better than its step-down model, the HPT-5054. The speakers are hidden beneath a thin bezel on the bottom of the set. It's also glossy. I'm not a glossy fan, but good luck trying to find a 50" plasma that isn't glossy. It's like trying to find a bathroom when you really have to use the bathroom. In other words, it's hard to find. Maybe I didn't look that hard. I guess if you really have to go, it doesn't matter if you find one or not. A bathroom, that is. It's also got the anti-glare screen and the USB port for showing pictures and what not. The TV, that is. I don't know of any bathroom that has a USB port, but hey. They're putting USB ports in just about everything nowadays, so who knows. Maybe I just gave somebody an idea. Which I won't get credit for. Again.* Viewing angle - you can walk right to the edge of the bezel and this TV gives a perfect picture with no washout.Other random advice: If you've got the room, go for this or a bigger set. Never settle for smaller when it comes to HDTVs. If you've never had a big set before, you'll get this thing home and say, "Dear God, what have I done?" like a mad scientist who has just seen his monstrous creation come to life. However, after a few days, you will acclimate to the size, and may even say to yourself, "I could have gone a little bigger." Then, one night, you will watch your old TV and say, "You are puny, and insignificant." And maybe you will make-believe that you are crushing your old TV between your thumb and forefinger with one eye closed, because it is really that small that it can be crushed in such a manner. Don't worry, your old TV doesn't have feelings. But you do. And you are sad that you paid almost half of what you paid for the new TV for the old TV. So you stop crushing it. And maybe you pout your lip a little. Maybe not. I'm just saying get the bigger TV, that's all, try not to read too much into it.

5Highly recommended
By Steve
I shopped endlessly for an HDTV at all of the retail stores, and I was pretty much set on Samsung for quality and price. I finally decided on the 50 inch 5064 and I am so glad I did. It looks beautiful, just mesmerizing. My signal is from Verizon FIOS for the HD with an HD-DVR through HDMI connections. The order was filled within one week and the delivery company called me to arrange a time the next day. They arrived on time, unboxed the unit, moved my old 36 inch CRT (240 pounds) and set up the new plasma TV, all in about 10 minutes. The crew was very friendly and professional. All in all I saved money and had a very pleasant purchase experience. The only problem is that I can't stop watching it! It's great!

4Not perfect, but for a 1080p 46" for less than $1100, it's almost there.
By P. Denney
I bought this a week ago, and have been thrilled with it so far. I have only noticed 3 negatives: (1) the lamp is a bit too noisy (though I have heard this is temporary, and mine is starting to get better); (2) the viewing angle is not great -- but it is not supposed to be great on rear projection; and (3) there is a bit of pixelation (however that is spelled...) on faster, more colorful scenes. If you can live with those once in awhile, the TV is more than worth it given the priceThe HD picture is great. I have watched several football and basketball games, and it looks simply amazing. It also looks great for movies, and while the black levels aren't great, they are good. The TV's sound is quite good, too. Am I an expert? No. But I've been watching HDTV for over 3 years on a 30" TV, and this 46" model looks simply amazing.

5Best television in price range
By Michael Kent
I have had this television for about 3 months. It used mainly for watching movies but the kids like watching cartoons on it also and even the regular cable doesn't look that bad. I own a Toshiba HD A-30 HD DVD player that is capable of sending a 1080p/24 signal which this tv is capable of displaying. The picture is perfect. I have not needed to tweak any of the settings for colors. The only settings I change are on my HD player depending on if the movie is HD or standard DVD. The viewing angle is fine. Some people freak out cause you can't see the picture if you are sitting at a 179 degree angle from the tv, but who does that? That spec is useless to use to determine how good a tv is if you are not realistically going to be viewing from that angle. All in all it is a great tv for the price. The other Bravia series which are $1000 more for the same size are not worth it in my opinion.

4Great TV for the Price!
By Kertis K Tomlins
I received this television as a Christmas gift. For the price the picture, clarity and high resolution display can't be beat! I compared it to other brands in the store and for the size and cost, there doesn't seem to be much competition. I would, however, recommend using an external speaker/surround sound system as te audio isn't the best. Great TV overall!

4Reliable, problem free, okay picture quality by 2012 standards
By Roderick T. Dailey
I bought this tv around 2010 and it has worked flawlessly since. I use it for gaming, tv, dvd, blue ray, etc. and the picture quality is good in most cases, but leaves a bit to be desired when there is fast paced action. You can get some blurring or ghosting when watching objects that are moving really quickly on the screen. The user interface is great and intuitive. Overall a really good tv, but getting a little old (by 2012).

2To Compromise the Java Man
By Mingus
Another reviewer rates this 5 stars without even plugging it in. I wonder if he is one of the third party sellers....Anyway, what I would like to add about this particular tv in regards to hz:LCD televisions that are 60Hz are generally easy on the eyes with no noticeable imperfections until there is fast action or camera panning. A 60Hz television will begin to look jumpy, an effect known as "Judder". So, please take this into consideration when spending so much money on a tv. 120hz seems to be minimum standard anymore and some are 240hz.Edit: Someone else commented that TV stations broadcast in 60hz. That is your incoming signal, but your television generates 120hz for the image it displays if you have a 120hz set. Many of the new sets are at 240hz making a 60hz set seem rather archaic.Another good thing to look for is the contrast. This is where you will notice a lot of difference in the quality of the picture. Plasma is generally the best for contrast but you can't go wrong with LCD or LED either. Whatever you decide, I would at least get a 120hz, 1080p, minimum.

5Beautiful picture
By Mike Hike
Bought this TV for a good price and am very impressed with the picture quality. The specs are not that great; however, the picture is better than TVs costing more with better specs. About the sound, it is about as good as anything else that is 1.4 inches thick. I have not found a slim TV that has great sound. This a TV that is very pleasing to watch. The matte screen finish, 1080p, stunning colors, and good dark scene production (for a LED) make this TV and joy to use.

4Good picture, poor sound from speakers, no headphone jack
By Nicholas Wilson
The picture is beautiful for TV or computer VGA or digital connection. It also has an adequate, but plain vanilla media player that can give you a slide show of photos or play MP3 files from a USB plug in. However the slide show does not include any transitions such as fade, nor any pan and scan effect. When you use the remote to pause or back up the slide show, the picture shrinks to show an interface panel at the bottom, and only returns to full screen after a 5-sec delay, so that's another annoyance. The media player can't play any digital video files. It can't zoom in or blow up a photo. Like I said, it's plain vanilla.Other reviewers said the speakers suck, but I didn't realize that it has no headphone jack, which is a major inconvenience for me, since I like to use wireless headphones a lot. It also has only one RCA audio out pair, and they are not volume controlled, another major pain. That means you can't use an inexpensive, simple audio amp and speakers because you have no remote control of the volume or muting. Instead you have to use an amp or home theater audio system that includes its own remote control, and you have to use that instead of the TV's remote to control the volume and muting. Really, how much cost did Toshiba save by not including a headphone jack? And why couldn't they at least optionally make the audio out jacks volume controlled by the remote? My inexpensive (under $60) 2-year old Memorex DVD progressive scan player with HDMI out and upscaling to 1080p makes standard DVD's look great on the Toshiba HDTV screen. But apparently it's not possible to control this DVD player through the HDMI connection using the TV remote. So now I'm up to a minimum of three remotes to watch a DVD and have decent sound. I have a Dishnetwork DVR receiver, so there's another remote. Some brands and models of DVD players and sound systems CAN be controlled by the TV remote through the HDMI connection, but not any of mine.I tried connecting the TV to the HDMI output from my Canon EOS 7D Pro DSLR camera, and it makes a beautiful display. With a long enough HDMI adapter cable I can hold the camera in my lap to work the controls, including ability to zoom in. Again it would be nice if the TV remote could control the camera functions through the HDMI cable, but apparently it can't. The camera is brand new, and I'm not sure if it allows control through the HDMI, but some of Canon's consumer cameras definitely do.I'm very happy with the picture quality, but I probably would have bought something else if I had known there was no earphone jack or controlled audio out on this model. That's why I deducted one star from my rating.Even though this is a full 40" screen it is light and thin enough for me to easily move from one room to another without help, or even to put it in the back seat of my car for transport. That's important because I want to be able to use this to display my photos and photo DVDs in a gallery setting or for small group slideshows. For that purpose I would connect it to my laptop as a computer display rather than use the limited built-in USB player.

5Excellent HDTV for the price!
By T. Chambers
At this price range, this is an excellent 40inch LED 1080p HDTV. Picture is better than most TVs that cost 200 more than this. The sound isn't as bad as some of the reviewers claim. I don't have any problem with the sound and found that it can fill up my whole living room. People need to be realistic; you're NEVER going to get HUGE, house shaking sound from a flat screen TV speaker. If you want sound like that, you gotta buy separate speakers / home theater system. GET Real people. TV looks great, nice shinny finish, stand very stable, and nice and thin. Great TV!!

5Best TV currently on the market.
By Jigsore
I had researched for about a year or so before placing a pre-order for this set. In 2010 I purchased a 55 inch Samsung C8000 LED set, and had bad luck with two units which were unrepairable, and needed to be replaced. Finally I got one without a problem, and it looked pretty great with bright content, but in blacked out scenes, or letterbox content there was a "flashlight" and cloud effect that was just too distracting. This is in a completely dark room by the way. It was at this point that I decided I was going to buy the best TV on the market with little regard to cost, and almost everything I read led to the upcoming VT30. So I placed my order in April, and the set was delivered on May 13th. Immediately I was blown away by the picture quality of this set, but also noticed a "flicker" effect, almost like the picture was fluttering on the high contrast scenes. For about the first month of owning the set I can't tell you how much reading and research I did to see if there was a way to fix this flicker problem, and although there is a lot of info on the web about this set, it seems like nobody was addressing the flicker issue. So I thought it must just be me, but then I found an article that talked about the greyscale of PDP technology, and that it can cause flicker which only some people see. I know that my vision is good, but could this be a problem with Plasma? Is it just me? Is it the settings of the set? Well, it couldn't be the latter, because I had tried just about every settings combination possible, and nothing had worked. When the contrast was turned down low it did reduce the flicker effect, but never went away and made the picture too dim to really enjoy. The picture quality on this was so good that I was heartbroken to think that it would go back because of this issue, after all, for this kind of money I expect near perfect results as I don't make this kind of purchase every day. So before returning the set I bit the bullet, and forked out the money to have a professional calibrator come out and adjust the settings in the TV's Service Menu. This is a menu that you can access with the proper codes, and is intended only for professionals to tweak the color, greyscale, light output, etc. on the set. Turns out that the set needed the calibration badly. I have never had a professional calibration on a TV before this, and although I figured that it would be a good idea, I never realized just how much difference it could make! The picture quality was already the best I had ever seen, but after professional calibration it is absolutely mind blowingly good! The flicker is gone, the picture is bright, but subtle, and tons of detail in the shadows. Black areas of a scene are pitch black, and colors are incredibly accurate. I almost want to miss work just to stay home and watch TV now. I have Comcast HD, and although it is pretty good in my neighborhood, you just can't beat a Blu-Ray on this thing. In fact, the calibrator that dialed in my TV has a Pioneer Kuro, and has calibrated up to an 11 Million dollar home theater, and his opinion is that there are a lot of great sets to choose from with Panasonic, Samsung, LG, etc, but he agrees that the VT30 is the best you can get right now. If you can afford it, I highly suggest that you take a good look at this TV before you make the leap. By the way, the Samsung LED that I referenced above is now in a bright room, and looks phenomenal. The Samsung D8000 is a pretty awesome set for 2011, and until the calibration I thought I was going to end up that direction, but it also has the flicker effect, and I have had bad luck with two Samsung TV's, and two of their Blu-Ray players in the past. Not sure how reliable they are this year, but I'm pretty sure that the Panasonic was the right choice.Update: The fluctuating brightness issue on these sets that some people are talking about was on a small number of the initial units released. It has been addressed, and fixed. You will not have a problem with fluctuating brightness from this point forward. Also, I saw the new Elite sets from Sharp and the VT30 is still definitely the king of the mountain. Go see for yourself and I'm sure you'll agree.

5Final review -- success.
By PeterUbers
I was reluctant to purchase this tv as are/were many secondary to the fluctuating brightness. My amazon TV is an August 2011 build. A previous amazon customer who wrote a review here mentioned his recently acquired (sept 2011) tv was a July build. amazon, on the phone, could not guarantee me any build date, I guess I got luck of the draw on August, which apparently all August and beyond tv's have a replaced A board from the factory -- there is changing information on this on the 'net forums.I was also a bit reluctant to purchase from Amazon, as I've never purchased something this expensive online before, but I've purchased from Amazon for years and have ZERO negative to say about Amazon reliability and service -- it's always been impecable.I received this this tv only 2 days after I purchased it from Amazon, it arrived in great condition, my wife was home and she didn't know to ask the gentlemen who delivered it to put it on the stand, but they did not offer to do this for us. They turned it on, made sure it worked, and left (they just removed the top part of the box, pulled the styrofoam wrap down a bit, and plugged it in).I got home, plugged in the wifi, updated firmware from 2.060 to 2.070 witout any problems.I must admit -- for the purpose of this review -- so far I have not done any major testing. I currently own a Panny TC-P65S2 (2010) and came from a Panny TC-P65S1, and have only owned panasonic plasmas. I have dealt with fluctuating black levels (and am annoyed by them) on the S2, and the VT30 was a great prospect when I heard about the great black levels, apparently stable (thus far in reports from professional testing, i.e. cnet).I'll report back as I start playing around with this thing. I gave it 5 stars because I did not want to lower the average rating.I can already tell the black levels are much better than the S2, the one sheet of glass is very cool, it's 1/2 or 1/3 the depth of my s2 -- very thin for a 65" plasma. The brushed aluminum trim is also a nice touch.Oh, and no buzz compared to my S2 .. my S2 can get rather loud, but this thing has no significant buzz - you can hear a little when you're a few feet away from it.******Final review:My EEPROM number is 84.46 .. this is an August build, Serial MJ1214XXXXX. This has the updated a board/firmware, because I see NO FBr (fluct. brightness)Performance -- stellar (compared to my previous panasonic plasmas). This is clearly, without the 9G Kuro on the market, the king of plasmas. I hope all purchasing from Amazon get the August build or beyond. When I called Amazon, they could not guarantee me that, but they would guarantee that they'd return it no charge if I was not satisfied in 30 days. Nothing touches Amazon's no tax price right now.Colors, black levels, "pop" .. all amazing.Sure, it's not a Kuro, but it's 90% there, and that says something. I thought my S2 black levels were terrible once I got the tv and started using it. For someone who will be doing dark room watching and CARES about black levels, fluctuating brightness, fluctuating black levels -- here's your tv.Thanks for reading.Update (all good) 11/28/11:This TV continues to impress me -- rock stable black levels and on brightness fluctuation issues (see my report above). Will definitely continue to stay with panny for plasma as currently their plasma is the best on the market. Time to get an oppo blu-ray player.

5Plasma For Life - VT30 is a Winner
By ha-evolution
This is my first plasma tv and I am pleasantly surprised. I did plenty of research before buying this tv and everything I read about this Panasonic VT30 series was correct. It has wonderful blacks and can get plenty bright in certain modes. I was somewhat concerned about the brightness issue given that my past flat panels have all been LCD. I admit I was a fan of the overblown brightness modes that LCD's allow but it is far from the most accurate picture and affects black levels. I had previously purchased a Samsung D8000 edge lit LED LCD but sent it back to Amazon because of the uneven back-lighting. This TV shows no uniformity issues (as expected with plasma technology). Watching sports on the Panny is great and 3D looks awesome also. Black levels are amazing - there is no black crush that I can discern and I have barely adjusted any settings on the TV.The styling of the VT30 series is a definite plus. I was considering the cheaper ST series but after I seeing the huge ugly bezel I couldn't settle for old school looks. The VT one sheet of glass look is very well executed. The panel is also slimmer than I was expecting considering this is a plasma. Also I have to note that there is no fan noise and no plasma buzzing which other plasmas brands are known for (Samsung). The Panasonic VT30 is a keeper.
