4Maybe best 2D choice of 2010, but could be better...
By Jamey
First, I just received my second set from Amazon today. The first set had an issue on the inside of the GLOSSY glass screen. I couldn't tell if it was a thread or a small crack in the screen. It obviously wasn't supposed to be there, and Amazon swapped it out for me. I'm on my first couple hours on the second set, but I haven't see the same issue with the second set yet. This does support a couple other reviewers suggesting quality control may be an issue with these sets. This contradicts the weight of the TV suggesting it should be very well built. The TV is stunningly simple to look at. There isn't a lot of extra bezel or showy manufacturer's name plates. I love this, as I'm usually driven nuts at having to look at a constant advertisment of a product I've already purchased. The "LG" that lights up at the bottom when the TV is turned on, can be set to be off when the set is on. This effectively means in a dark room (as mine is), the ONLY thing you see on this TV is the picture...exactly as it should be. The only exception is a small set of lights along the bottom that are only powered during power on and off to inform the viewer of this.My general impression on the picture quality is mostly very impressed. I'm not a display expert so I'll only state what I notice as a slightly more "techy" than average viewer. These sets do seem to have a screen uniformity issue. Large and bright, white or very light colored sections of the screen will show light horizontal bands. These bands are light, but can be distracting depending on the viewer. It seemed to get better with more hours on the first set, but it could have been the firmware issue. Either way, know that if you watch a lot of content containing mostly white screens, you may want to look at another TV. Some people claim to not be able to see this. Others state they see even more of it during panning scenes. Perhaps there is some difference from one panel to the next. Either way, I have seen it on two sets, so anyone looking at purchasing the set should expect it, unless there is an update (software or hardware) to the set at some time.I looked at a backlit/local dimmed set like this for one big reason though...CONTRAST. Buying this set to watch solid bright screens would seem to be a waste. Where this particular set really shows it stuff is in the black level it can achieve. Movies are beautiful. I thought my old RPTV had a nice picture, but the sharpness and clarity of the 55LE8500 really put my old set to shame. As mentioned above, when you turn off the LG logo, all you see is the picture. Even if there is letterboxing, you will only see the picture. The rest of the screen will be as black as the bezel, and in a dark room, you won't notice it as letterboxing at all.Colors are vivid and natural looking. The settings from the factory are pretty decent, but count on using the two extra ISF settings that can be customized to your liking. Having a knowledgable Tech to come over to properly set up the TV would be wise if you can afford it, but it's not neccesary to achieve a nice picture. There is even a built-in menu system to aid you in doing so.Summing it upPros:Awesome blacklevelSharp pictureGreat colorsNo flashy labels or lights to be bothersomeAutomatic updates if you connect it to the internetTons of access to change viewing settingsdiscrete codes for most anything you might want for a customized remote.Cons:screen has uniformity issuespossible quality control issuesmaybe a bit too heavyscreen is a bit too glossyno 3D supportOverall, this is probably the best 2D TV released in 2010. If you can control the lighting in your room, and you don't watch lots of source material with large patches of very light scenes, this is the TV for you. Amazon is a great source for the set, but know the wireless media kit was offered free with the set last week, and the price has been changing dramatically (down and up and back down again). I gave it 4 stars because it could have been a bit better, and probably should have been.

5First rate television, stunning picture quality
By Wade Hathaway
I had my 55LE8500 delivered last Wednesday and after spending some time with it I know I made the right choice for a new television. The picture is really stunning when displaying HD programming. Bluray titles even more so. I am also extremely happy with the quality of standard def programming, ie non hd cable channels and avi files. The black level performance is amazing. This tv has full array LED backlighting with local dimming and does not suffer from clouding or flashlighting problems that are present in other products. The glass front is both an image improver lending a crystal clear look to the picture, but it is also very reflective so you will need to be able to control light sources in your viewing room. For me this was not difficult, however, if you have a room with many large windows and also lamps it could be a challenge. You may also enjoy the internet features available after connecting the television to your network. You can update the firmware when available, there are movie choices from Vudu and Netflix and many more options. This product is an expensive item, but the build quality shows and the display technology is among the best out there this year. My first choice had been a Panasonic 54VT25 plasma; its screen is not so reflective, but I am worried about image retention and burnin so I went with the LCD.If you want one of the best HD displays and can control the light sources in your viewing room, you won't regret owning the LG LE8500.

5Top Dollar, Top Quality TV
By S. Patel
Got the LG55LE8500 TV about 3 weeks ago. So far I am very happy with the TV. anything HD looks great and blu ray is just amazing. black is black on this tv and colors are quite accurate. as great as this tv is, it does have its cons. analog cable tv does not look very good at all on this set. the screen is a borderless glass screen which can be quite reflective during dark scenes especially if you have a very well lit up room. also you will see some horizontal banding(lines) across the screen on bright blue background scenes at times. some people are going to be annoyed by this, others wont care or even notice it. overall, this tv is supposed to be the 2nd best model of LGs LED tvs and it lives up to it. its not the cheapest of TVs but price compared to equivalent Samsung models, its well worth it as far as build and picture quality go.

5Sony 55" EX-710: An Excellent Affordable LED/LCD TV
By Tomitoon
I spent hours researching and comparing "LED" LCD TV's in the 55" size category. I finally narrowed it down to two "edge-lit" LED TV's (the Sony Bravia 55" EX710 and the Samsung 55" LED 6300 series) based on price/performance, overall image quality, image contrast, refreshing rates (for sports), ease of use and customer service.I've owned both Sony and Samsung in the past and was satisfied in general with their performance and customer service so I felt comfortable with either TV from a reliability and customer service perspective. In terms of image, watching the TV's side by side for well over 10 hours, I can say I could not distinguish between the two TV's. The shape of the Sony is a bit different (slightly taller and narrower) than the Samsung, giving you the impression that the Samsung is bigger, but it's not. Both the Sony and Samsung TV's provide excellent color resolution and contrast, deep dark colors and vibrant lighter colors as well.I did find the Samsung 6300 series tv image on "non-HD" tv programs to be slightly better than the Sony, but the difference was marginal. As for sports, both have 120hz. and relatively fast refreshing rates, so sports viewing on either TV is excellent. For ease of use and set up, I found the Sony 55" to be very good. Sony provides the user manual as an item on the TV menu instead of a written one, which may not be to everyone's liking. But then again, with it installed on the TV, you're never wondering "where the heck did I put that user manual!"In the end, given the overall similarity in quality and performance between the Sony 55"EX710 and the Samsung 6300 series LED/LCD TV's, I boiled it down to price and that's where the Sony won out! I paid $1499 for the Sony while the best price I could find for the Samsung was $1750. I put the price savings towards a 5 year extended warranty for the Sony!

3Samsung C6400/C6300 vs Samsung C6900/C6800 vs Bravia EX710/EX711
By Matt P
I spent weeks researching and testing various LCD/LED flat screens. In the end I purchased the Samsung 55 inch C6400. The C6400 model is the same screen as the C6300 model except the C6400 has Samsung's built-in internet apps whereas the C6300 does not. In the process, I purchased two Samsungs (C6400 and C6900) and one Sony Bravia (EX711). Here is what I learned: * All of the review websites "calibrate" their screens before performing a review. During calibration the screen's default settings are changed to supposedly make them more accurate. Nifty features that are built into the screen like "Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio" are frequently disabled during calibration because they can affect the accuracy of the image. In my opinion, if a nifty feature in your television can make it appear brighter or more colorful, go for it. Color accuracy is overrated. What matters is whether *you* like the picture or not. * Edge-lit screens like the Samsungs and Bravia I reviewed are thinner, lighter, and more eco-friendly than the full-array screens. In theory full-array screens give better contrast ratios, and require less picture manipulation to achieve said contrast ratios. To my untrained eyes, it's hard to see a difference. * Dynamic edge-lit on the C6900 sounds like a good idea, but in my testing it created some weird affects that my wife, in particular, didn't care for where some parts of a dark image were pitch black and other parts of the same dark image were a brighter black, giving the appearance that someone turned on a spotlight down part of the screen. * The blacks were darker on the C6400 than the C6900. Go figure. * Edge-lit screens tend to hide the speakers on the back of the set. This produces a "reflected" sound that is decent, but not the best. We planned to purchase a theater system with our television so this didn't really matter to us. * The Samsungs and Bravia screens came with a swivel stand. This was important for our living room set up. * None of the Samsungs supported HDMI Auto Return Channel. Without ARC I have to power on the screen *and* the theater system to watch video from external devices like a blue ray player or game console. Not a big deal but it occasionally frustrates. The Bravia fully supported HDMI Audio Return Channel. * When using motion blur reduction, the Samsungs have A/V sync issues in combination with our theater system. I have addressed this by increasing the audio delay in our theater system. It's not exactly perfect but it gets lip sync close enough that no one (except myself of course) ever notices it. * All of the Samsung screens exhibited corner lighting and flashlighting to some degree. Each Samsung screen was slightly different. To see this, put the screen in Movie mode and view a uniform dark image in a pitch black room. You should see that the screen is slightly brighter in the corners and certain areas of the screen are also brighter (flashlighting). At first this really bothered me, but then I got used to it. There's simply no way you're going to notice this where it matters most: where the movie picture is playing. You'll only ever see it in a darkened room between scenes and around the edges where the movie isn't playing. * Amazingly the Bravia didn't have *any* corner lighting or flashlighting. I don't know how Sony pulled that off, but I was impressed. Samsung should license Sony's edge lighting technology. * The Samsungs all have a reflective screen which produces a really sharp and bright image that seems to pop off the screen. The Bravia uses a matte screen. I was baffled to observe that the Samsungs all handled reflections much better than the Bravia. There is a window directly behind our viewing sofa. With the Samsungs you were hard pressed to even see a reflection at all during daytime viewing. With the Bravia, the television was almost unwatchable during daylight hours. Reflections caused a blooming halo affect that was really dramatic. Score one for Samsung's "Ultra Clear Panel" technology. * All the Samsungs handled SD content really well. SD content on the Bravia looked bad in comparison. * The Bravia screen frequently exhibited really noisy colors, particularly with skin tones. This was much less of an issue with 1080p content, but was really annoying at times. The Samsungs never had this problem. * The Samsungs use a remote control that is relatively simple and is backlit. My wife and kids had no issues picking it up and using it right away. The Bravia remote control was significantly more complicated and was not backlit. * All the Samsungs employ mediocre motion blur reduction. Motion blur reduction helps minimize the stuttering affect during movement - especially panning shots. The problem is that unless it is set to Off or Clear, the Samsungs occasionally stuttered. In practice this isn't a problem as I actually prefer the Clear setting, but sometimes I want to dial this setting up for animated feature films (Cars, Toy Story, etc.) and it often doesn't work out well. * The Bravia had kick-but motion blur reduction. I was really impressed. Everything was smooth and fluid. This may have been in part due to Sony's "True Cinema" technology. * When I originally started out, I really wanted our new television to provide Netflix playback and DLNA media streaming. Despite what is advertised, Samsung's Netflix and DLNA support is poor. On both Samsungs, Netflix was constantly switching bitrates (about once a minute) and each time the picture disappear to black for about a quarter of a second. Audio was unaffected. I repeatedly took the exact same network cable and plugged it into other devices (PS3, Roku, Laptop) and Netflix playback was flawless HD. Samsung reportedly insists the problem is the user's internet service. * None of the Samsungs or the Bravia I tested would connect to my DLNA server. I have approximately five streaming devices (Logitech music box, No-name streaming box, iPad, PS3, etc.) spread throughout my home and none have had any issue connecting to my DLNA server. * The Bravia did have better Netflix support, however overall bitrate was still less than other devices (PS3, Roku, Laptop). A few video stalls (buffering) were experienced on the Bravia. * In my opinion, the C6400 isn't worth the extra cost over the C6300. In my case I got a super deal on the C6400 so it wasn't an issue. Perhaps in another few years, these issues will get ironed out.

5Great TV - Nothing to complain about
By netrabbit
I bought this TV online during black friday for 1500$ delivered. Right out of the box the TV was simply amazing. I did not have to change any color, brightness, contrast settings. It chooses the right picture mode based on the content. Some people have complained about the sound, but I found it to be sufficient for my room (15 feet by 30 feet). I like the fact that the stand provides about 20 degree movement on each side. Before this I bought a Vizio and the picture quality on that was horrible (I obviously returned it). This is one of the best TV out there if you are not looking for 3D.Some of the things that I found not that great:* The factory setting for the screen size cuts about 3-5% of the picture from all sides on HDMI input including computer, XBOX, DVD, Dish HD Receiver. It took me some time to realize that I was missing some of the picture. You need to set "Screen" to "full pizel" to get complete HDMI picture. I am not sure why they would set the default to setting that would cut the picture.* Netflix streaming is ok, I would rather connect computer directly. Because the in-built software only displays instant queue. You must add movie to instant queue using computre and I have also noticed a lag (sometimes hours) before the instant queue gets updated.* USB port on the TV plays photos, music and home videos. However, tt recognizes FAT32 drives only. There is also limited support of the file format. It played AVCHD straight out of the camcorder, but did not play TS files that I created by combining the AVCHD clips. Nor did it play DV AVI Type 1 or Type 2 format files. It plays the photos and music very well, no issues there. It is also DLNA server so you can stream content from home computer.Overall very happy with the picture and sound quality of the TV.

5Shockingly Good, but the 8000 will be the Kuro replacement
By David A. Leon
I was a committed DLP fan before undergoing a conversion experience on Friday April 17th. I had planned to replace my Samsung DLP with a Mitbushi DLP or LaserVue. In the final hours, I just couldn't go through with it.A major Los Angeles vendor set up a display with the UN55B7000 sandwiched between a LaserVue and a Kuro 151. The results were pretty plain to my eyes. The Luxia pretty well crushed both of them. The cult of Kuro will denounce me for heresy and blaspheme, but this is what I saw. About 1 hour of fiddling with the settings on LaserVue did not change the situation much. The Kuro was locked in at calibrated settings which the employees would not allow me to change. Evidently, it was fully tuned up. Once again, this left me with the impression that a fully calibrated Kuro is an over-rated beast indeed. No wonder Pioneer quit the market. The bottom line: I bought this unit the next day. It took about 2 hours to tune up after I took it out of the box. [Use the natural color setting. Customize motion smoothing to 7 for jitter control and 7 for blur control, or shut it off entirely] Since then it has been pretty astounding. Unbelievable color. Unbelievable reds. Unbelievable contrast ratios. Unbelievable black levels. Very bright. Generates no perceivable heat. Does not get hot. The detail and sharpness and depth of image is truly astounding. I have never seen anything that can compare, and I have been shopping for several months now.ConsI am still questioning the merit of the 120Hz motion smoothing technology. It does weird things to slow motion instant replays. It does stranger things to 24fps movies. Seems to work best with live actions sports and HDTV programs shot on digital. You can always turn it off. Blu-rays seem more natural with the technology switched off. Ultimately, Blu-Ray looks magnificent either way.AdviceA word of advice for the first reviewer and everybody else. You should never, never, never use the speakers on your HDTV. All HDTVs are equipped with pathetic 10 watt reference speakers that stink. All HDTV owners should invest in some sort of home theater surround sound system. It doesn't have to be that expensive. Even a $300 Home Theater in a Box will make a world of difference.

5Amazing TV - will not disappoint!! UPDATED 9/23
By D. Lewin
UPDATED BELOW 9/23/09...I have had this TV for about 2 weeks now and could not be more pleased! My A/V setup was in place when it arrived and all I had to do was connect the HDMI to start watching television. I am running HD cable (HDMI), Wii (Component), Blu Ray (HDMI), and a camera (HDMI) all through the Denon AVR-1910. Only the HDMI out from the Denon to the TV is needed as it switches and upconverts all video. So after I plugged it in, cable channels started appearing...except for 2 HD channels - just got a black screen. I spent 45 minutes adjusting resolution ins/outs on the cable box, receiver, and TV to no avail. Finally, I rebooted the cable box, and there they were. Yes, I should have tried that first. Anyway, everything has been running without issue.I must say, this picture is flat out gorgeous. I spent a lot of time researching TV's and checking them out in the stores; LG, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, LCD, LED, etc... but I always came back to this Samsung LED line of sets. I had read reviews talking about "searchlights" in the corners, and conversely, dark spots in the corners. The former issue I never really saw firsthand. The dark spots though, I did notice in the stores. It seemed more prevalent on the 8000 series, and in some cases I didn't see them at all. When it came down to it though, I found the overall picture so stunning that the dark areas didn't affect me (it was REALLY subtle). I was also suspicious that the sets in the stores that are constantly turned on may have something to do with it. I am pleased to say that I don't see any artifacts on my new set. The picture brightness is very uniform throughout. Couldn't be happier! If you've seen these TV's firsthand you know the thinness of the set is beyond compare. Mine is on a stand, but on the wall it would look amazing (too bad speakers aren't this thin). As far as the picture goes, if you are pushing an HD signal to it...WOW! The picture is so vivid, bright, and detailed some scenes truly start to look 3-dimensional. Not sure what effect I'm really seeing but that's what it looks like. We had friends over and the kids were watching Kung Fu Panda in HD. All the guys were standing there behind the kids mumbling about the amazing picture. Standard def pictures look fine as well, certainly better than my old DLP. But make no mistake, the payoff is in the HD content. So I find myself tweaking the picture each day....2 notches lower on the color, 1 higher on the gamma, 1 more for backlight, etc... it's pretty much at the point where all channels look fabulous and I don't need to adjust anything else. I'd say, expect to do that on any TV you get. I tried a cnet configuration that they recommend for dark room viewing and I hated it! Immediately switched back to my personal settings. The great thing is that the accurate colors and different configurable settings on this TV provide the flexibility that makes it nearly impossible NOT to get a perfect picture! BUT everyone's TV room, own eyes, and preferences are a little different. Because there are so many setting combinations, finding the perfect configuration for you will just take a little time - don't expect to have it straight out of the box. As far as contrast goes, awesome! In a scene of Iron Man (Blu Ray), when Tony Stark crashed his own companies party, Jeff Bridges is wearing a tux with a white scarf. I could see the ever-so-slightest off-color herringbone pattern in the scarf next to the black jacket - and it wasn't a close up. (Not kidding, it was kind of neat!)....so just based on that scene, I'd say the contrast and sharpness are top notch. The 120hz motion effect is great as well. If you haven't yet, go see a demonstration in the store - you really need to see it to understand the hype. It is definitely pretty cool, but I have added some blur and judder back into my settings because it kind of freaked my wife out a little bit. Incredibly smooth, but definitely not how you'd see a movie in the theater. Many scenes end up looking fake, or like you're standing there watching a play on stage. Just know that it's completely adjustable or can be shut off entirely. Again, your personal preference will dictate the settings.I'm also happy to say that the Denon upconverts the Wii video nicely and it pops out on the Samsung in full-screen looking great. I imagine PS3 or XBOX games with HD output look as good as Blu Ray. I also got the wireless adapter and hooked up to my Windows Media Center to browse pics and movies. Works great - no issues there. The only oddity that I have seen is the fluctuating back light during dark scenes. Other reviews point this out as well. If a scene goes really dark, like rolling the first credits after the movie, yes, the entire screen will dim. Switch back to a bright scene and the brightness pops back on. When it happens it's noticeable, but it doesn't happen often. I only see it in an extreme contrast change as described above. In my opinion this is a small price to pay when 99.9% of the experience is breathtaking.Overall, this set delivers an incredible picture that is hard to beat. I read a lot of professional reviews and they always find a few negative things to focus on, like "the moiré on the fence in the 16th fight scene when the guy drops his gun was noticeable." Huh? They also say 240hz is better than 120hz. Yes, if your name is UNIVAC and you are analyzing a test pattern. Real people can't even sense some of these things! I stopped paying too much attention to these after a while. Stand in front of these sets, adjust the pictures, and you will figure out what looks good! For me, this was it - I absolutely recommend this television!UPDATE: 9/23/09 - Fluctuating Backlight Fixed! Just want to say that this TV still impresses me every time I watch it. As to the fluctuating backlight issue... I found a post that explained how to go into the service menu and turn this off. It's called CE Dimming and can be set to on or off in both Standard and Movie modes. I turned it off in the Standard mode and it worked without issue. You do need to go in and readjust your picture settings since it resets them, so write them down beforehand. Otherwise, it worked fine and now I have to say the picture is 100% solid. Here are the instructions: With the TV off, push Mute, 1, 8, 2, Power. Scroll to "Advanced", press 0000 - don't hit enter. Scroll (down arrow) to CE Dimming and hit Enter. Select Movie or Standard, and hit the left or right arrow to switch it off. Done, hit power. Turn on the TV like you normally would and Auto-dimming is now off!

4Beautiful television, great picture, poor sound, menus and limmitations
By Jeff Gates
Pros:1- amazing size to performance ratio. This TV is incredibly thin. You will have to see it to believe it. At just over an inch thick (not to mention 55" from corner to corner), this television boasts some of the best stats available, compared to any other brands/models out there.2-LED back lighting. This feature is what initially caught my eye. When I first saw it I noticed immediately how incredibly deep the blacks were. This boost in depth of the color plate seems to permeate the entire color spectrum, allowing for deeper, more remarkable fullness when viewing all forms content.3- base statistics. The contrast ratio (although I have read many conflicting, reports, including the manufactures own specification information, which makes it difficult to place an exact quantitative value), 120hz, 1080p, 4 millisecond response time, USB x2 connections, LAN access, ect... They are all there. This television has the capabilities to seamlessly bind your computer or local area network and your home theater into a truly coherent "media center" provided you have the gumption.4- "Xbrite" like display. I call it this for lack of a better option. The screen itself of this LCD is not matted like many of its predecessors, it is glossy resembling a plasma TV or some of its smaller LCD PC monitor cousins, which allows it a brighter, fuller color clarity. This could be considered as "bothersome" by some because it allows for more apparent reflections of light, casting it back into the viewers eye, but the shear intensity of light emitted by this TV puts this claim to rest.Cons:1- Menus. After spending multiple hours removing my previous television, measuring and cutting holes in walls, fuddling with cables, and vacuuming dust bunnies and drywall dust, I found my self at the heart of my disappointment with this TV. Navigating the menu system. Don't get me wrong, it is not difficult, but it is entirely cumbersome. To start off a simple task like switching sources is made time consuming and attracts attention because you have to hit a minimum of 3 buttons on the remote to switch to your closest input. This may seem like someone complaining that you have to turn the faucet on to fill a glass of water but just play with it for a bit and you will see what I am talking about. The menus themselves are all animated and take a moment to load, which adds to the frustration when trying to navigate through them, and when you get to the input you want you have to manually exit the menu by pressing the "enter" or "return" button on the remote. This problem could have been easily alleviated by having shortcut buttons to the individual inputs on the remote, like most other manufactures offer.2-Sound. The sound quality is greatly deteriorated by the fact that the speakers on this model face the opposite direction of the screen. Reverberation off a wall is not an adequate substitution for direct focus. The sound quality is not bad in itself, such as being boxy, tinny or deteriorating with increased volume, it is just not as full as others that I have heard (but this is to be expected being the form factor that it is). It will be necessary to have a surround sound system with this TV, but you probably already have one if you are seriously looking at this model.3 Limitation of inputs. For some insane reason, Samsung preemptively decided which inputs (HDMI) you could use for which devices and placed limitations on those inputs as they saw fit. This is entirely lame and a let down. Scrolling through the menu selections on various HDMI inputs you will notice that a good majority or your picture modifications are not adjustable according to what input you have currently selected. Despite changing the labels of the inputs and reorganizing HDMI inputs, you are not able to get the full gamut of picture corrections that you payed a lot of money for. This, for me, is the biggest let down of the television. There is nothing worse than seeing a whole slue of options that are supposedly available, but are "grayed out" for some unknown reason. I expect, at this price and ability, to be able to fully customize each input that the televesion has, regardless of what peripheral I am connecting to it.This con might not prevent you from purchasing this TV, but you should be at least aware of it. I have a lot of different devices connected at any given time, ie. blue ray, dvd, vhs, xbox 360, ps3, wii, xbox, n64, psx, snes, nes, pc, camcorder, camera, and some flash based devices, like some of the newer ipods/iphones, and it really bothers me that I cannot change the settings to what ever fits my needs best.4- Dynamic contrast. This feature seems to be a blessing and a bit of a curse. On one hand you get dark, rich colors, and on the other you get much darker whites when the majority of the screen is dark in hue. You only need to scroll through the menu system of the TV on a static, dark background to see this flaw in action. How dynamic contrast works is that it lowers the backlighting of the television when it senses most of what it is displaying is dark, which makes any contrast in hues, i.e. whites to blacks, much darker than they would normally be. This may not be a deal breaker for some, but depending on what you watch, there is a noticeable difference. I personally like to watch a lot of the space/nasa documentaries, and when they show Hubble images of deep space that are for the most part black, with just a few pin points of light, you notice that that you are loosing quality/brightness of image (as compared to other flat panels without this dynamic contrast perk).5- Lack of inputs. This downfall is the price you pay for having such a small form factor I guess. 4 HDMI is ok, minus them all being individually limited, but there is only one component in, no composite/S video in at all and the stereo out is a 3.5mm jack so you need an adapter, which is not included. The TV does have optical audio out, so if you have a somewhat capable/newer surround sound system you will be ok, provided you spend the money and buy the expensive cabling to connect it (heaven forbid that your receiver is more than a few feet away or else you are going to feel it in your wallet). Another problem that all of these digital connections bring, that is rarely advertised, is that there is a lot more optimization involved to make them work normally. Say "good by" to just plugging things in and having them work. If you don't have a lot of patients for reading user manuals or trial and error, it might be necessary to pay the extra cost for having some "Geek" come to your house and make everything work properly for you.Another slight annoyance is that this TV does not offer any sort of video out. A slight inconvenience really, but I would like to keep my options open.6- 120 hz it more like "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Some people like its effects on movies/games, I personally have turn it off to make the TV look normal to me. You really need to evaluate the feature for your self and make a decision. For me, it looks like it increases the frame rate at times and slows it down in others, which gives the overall viewing quality a "hurky-jerky" feel. Others that have seen the feature on my TV say it gives it more of a 3D quality or that it is more like looking out a window, as apposed to viewing a TV. Its effect is much more noticeable while viewing certain media such as , blue ray, DVD's or video games. I can barely notice it while watching HD/SD content from Comcast (1080i/480p respectively).7-"Media Center" short comings. What, no youtube? Even my phone has that. I would also like to see WMC connectivity, a flash enabled web browser, and come to think of it, bluetooth, so you can connect a qwarty keyboard to actually take advantage of it all. This would truly bump this TV into an upper eschelon, rivaled by no other device to date.SummaryAll in all, I think this TV is feature rich with a few let downs that could be corrected with a bit of ingenuity (hopefully made possible in the way of firmware upgrades, putting the LAN feature to good use). I would not personally recommend this TV to any of may friends because I would not want to hear them complain, but I would tell them to come over, play with it and decide for themselves if it is the right choice for them. Knowing what I know now it would be hard to say if I would upgrade again from what I had previously (LG 50px4dr) to this TV, but I can truthfully say that the picture quality on most devices (cable, xbox 360 and others (NOT PLAYSTATION 3, I get a weird snowy pixelated effect on the home screen that drives me crazy and was the reason I bought a new TV in the first place)) is vastly superior to most other televisions that I have seen. The bottom line is that you need to play with this television for a bit before you purchase.

5835 52 inch Review
By CN11FortCo
Received this TV late last week (6/2/11). The set looks great. I ordered a 52 inch Samsung 7000 series Plasma a couple of months before this and ended up returning it. It put out a lot of heat! The Plasma also had image-retention.If you would watch ESPN for even twenty minutes and change the channel, you could see the shadow of the ESPN logo for a couple of minutes.. The Plasma also had a slight buzzing noise. BTW the Plasma was properly broken in.After returning the Plasma I decided I did not want logo's and letterbox's (widescreen black boxes top & bottom) dictating what I watched. I knew I wanted an LED-LCD from one of the top manufactures (Samsung, Sony, LG, Sharp). The Sony's were a little ridiculous as far as the price and did not look any better in the big-box stores than the other brands: Buy one if you really want to pay more for a Sony logo to impress your friends (I hope you do not have those type of friends, life is too short)... The Samsung TV's seemed to have "clouding" issues and I was not impressed with my Samsung Plasma. This set had good reviews and the 52 inch size is perfect! The TV is bright (backlight needs to be turned down a bit from factory setting) and really looks amazing with no noticed "flash-lighting" or "clouding" so far. Colors a very accurate and the apps, ex. Netflix, are great. The TV even comes with wifi built in, no usb wifi device needed! Blacks are dark for an led and viewing angles are very wide.If you want a solid set from one of the top manufacturers this set is perfect and can be had for a solid value.

4Decent TV
By Bryan
Let me start off by saying this TV when I first saw it online I fell in love. The reviews at the time all had 4-5 star, no complaints ect. I first saw it at $1450ish on Amazon and figured for a 52" 3D LED TV that sounds like a steal.I have a 32" Sharp TV in my bedroom thats older and love it, grant it 5 years old, still is a great LCD.Anyway a few things on this TV I want to point out as some reivews don't mention this or understand it.This TV while it is LED it is Edgelit LED which means it will have some very minor bleed, but this is what allows it to be soo thin, and boy is it small! GREAT for wall hanging!Let me go into some details on this. The edges of the screen on dark images look perfect, no issues, on bright images you see the far left and right side have a very minor bit of more brightness to them, and no one noticed until I pointed it out even. (I am just very detailed so I see everything). Its def not a cause to not buy the TV. Its very minor and again on dark images (which I thought is funny as expected otherwise) it has no bleed on edges. The flightlight effect some people are seeing, if I recall correct its same as above, on edgelit this can be common, but its also very very minor and only visable if you have the image set to certain modes that are just bright. I have yet to adjust anything manually, am going to calibrate it with the Disney WOW disk when I get around to ordering but I am sure after this it will be fine. All in all I think for 3d LED tv its fair price. It has plenty of features for network (which the Wifi setup without issue and works great also btw).My only other complaint other than minor things mentioned above, which wouldn't stop me from buying again because for the price I cant find anything better except maybe plasma is that its not a true 240Hz like Amazon and Sharp make it look. This TV is 120Hz and has a setting for 120Hz high, low and 240 Aquomotion. The 240 Aquomotion is not a real 240Hz, its 120Hz on the screen side and does 120Hz on the LEDs or something like that.In Sharps words "AquoMotion 240 Technology improves fast moving images by combining Sharp's 120Hz Fine Motion Enhanced Technology with 120-backlight scanning. Fine Motion Advanced processing creates and inserts 60 unique frames a second, which smoothes out edges that occur between frames in the original footage. The backlight scanning works with the panel refresh rate to further reduce perceived motion blur and improve overall clarity and picture quality."So that's my only other complaint really. I thought I got a great deal on a 240Hz TV to find out its really just 120Hz. That made me feel like the value of it went down some.I really have not gotten to test 3D also because no glasses and the new model ones just came out and are not in stores yet and I don't want to buy the old ones of course. Also if buying on Amazon, buy it after like 1AM ET or late on weekends. The price has dropped down to mid 1300's and seems to jump all over. Also be careful as Amazon only price matches one time, I thought they would keep matching own price but while they did work with me a few times they pointed out its a onetime thing so make it count if using!Overall I would say is still a decent TV for price, even feeling robbed on the 240Hz a little. You cant find a 3D 52" LED TV for this price. Only plasma. My other minor complaint I forgot to add is the screen is semi gloss, can have some glare. Probably not as bad as a plasma would be but was unexpected.I would rate it at a B+ on A-F scale. Would be an A if was true 240Hz and not gloss as again the bleed and what not is so minor I don't mind it once you correct settings.***Update*** 7/4/11So TV started to get more noticeable flashlighting effect. Seems that as it broke in some they got brighter and now I can see them through some images. I read a lot of people online get this problem but also a lot don't. With the size of these nothing is perfect.Anyway I reached out to Amazon and no questions asked they placed a new order and the delivery guys will pick this one up on way out.I did also notice on this TV I do have 2 stuck pixels. They are the yellow ones too but from 2 or more feet away you can't see them because how small they are.I hope my new one has no stuck (even though couldn't tell) and the flashlighting is none or much less. It seems when you first turn on the TV you get no flashlighting but after about an hour of being on its at its brightest. Will update when I get it *crosses fingers****UPDATE*** 7/11/11So new TV came. Box looked not the best which I was worried about (not Amazon's fault).Anyway got it all setup. It has same flashlight issue, but has a few less but still has them. Hopefully they won't get any brighter this time. The upside is this one has no stuck or bad pixels at all and old one had a few yellow ones. (Not that I could see them from more than 2 feet away and I wouldn't RMA with only a few if you cant see them from 2 feet or more away). Like I said before some flashlighting is expected on these types of TV and it also depends on your brightness. They don't show them also for the first hour you turn them on, it's after about an hour they start to show. I can see them simple after an hour on and than putting it on Auto (so it does not dim down) and turning my cable box off so the screen is blank. They are livable and may adjust away better when I re-calibrate.On the other upside Amazon has a GREAT deal right now. Buy this TV from them before end of July and you also get TWO free 3D glasses!! That's extra $160 you save! Just add them to cart at the same time you buy the TV. This TV does not come with any by default but with Amazon doing this AWSOME BUNDLE the value of this TV just got even better! So after all this would I buy this TV again? Yup! It's still a great price and has a nice picture. My only complaints still are minor flash lighting (only visible after being on more than an hour and very minor, someone prob wont see unless I point out), the semi gloss screen and the misleading 240Hz thing as its really only 120Hz. It's still a great buy though. You can't find anything with these features for this price still. It has great apps, built-in Wifi (no dongle to play with or buy even like some Samsungs make you) and it connects to internet without any issues!Buy the TV and get it before july ends so you get the free glasses! You won't regret it. And with Amazon if you have ANY issues they will work with you without question. So you see a few people with issues with lines or something but a simple eMail or call and Amazon takes care of you. That's why I buy from Amazon over BestBuy or Walmart. Great price, great selection and AWSOME customer service!

5awesome tv
By bellyhead
bought from modia thru amazon. delivery was quick and without any trouble. tv is nice and thin and very light weight. picture right out of the box was ok and with a little tweaking it is absolutely stunning. watched some basketball and game of thrones and was blown away.tv is hooked up to standard cable box(hdmi), dvd player(hdmi), wii(component)after a quick firmware update via ethernet cable i tested all of the online services and everything worked as advertised. i love the dlna feature which works great with windows media player and connects to my libraries on my pc. was able to watch movies, play songs or look at pictures.sound is not bad for a tv but of course you should connect it to a surround systemhaven't even tested wifi or 3d yet. will update as soon as i get a sec to test.conclusion: i upgraded from 32" without changing viewing distance. i feel like i am only now really enjoying hdtv the detail and clarity are amazing. highly recommend this tv

5Excellent, but NOT without flaws - Read here
By VideoAudioPhile
First off, I'm not a biased reviewer. Everything I review, I do it for the sake of truthness. By the way, I own the 40 inch of this model.I have owned and do own SEVERAL TVs, ranging from brands and types. I am a HUGE audio/video phile, and I always have been since the introduction of high definiton teleivision. I'm going to break this review down into a few parts.SETUP + BUILD QUALITY- Pretty straight forward. Easy to assemble, but the back semi circular black piece doesn't like to stay in place and doesn't feel super high quality. The stand however feels sturdy especially once the TV is screwed into it. This is an easy part, it's four screws which is nothing difficult. Now, onto the TV. Compared to other Sony models I've owned or do own (S5100, XBR4, SXRD XBR2, Trinitron 34 inch CRT, EX 46 inch), this TV feels VERY high quality. The bezel feels very well made and produced, unlike a few Sonys I've seen before. The screen also feels very high quality, and is not super reflective, unless there's a lot of light. Then, it gets interesting. The remote is set up decently, but may be a little confusing to some. Again, straightforward. Upon turning on the TV you'll enter a setup screen etc, you know the rundown. You will be prompted to set up an internet connection, and when you do you'll have tons of interesting aps to keep you busy for a while. Netflix and the Golf channel are to name a few. The menu system is also similar to that of the Playstation 3, and is VERY easy to navigate. Good rating here Sony.FEATURES + INPUTSPretty short category. FOUR HDMI ports! That's pretty decent. You'll have standard Component, Composite, Tuner, and PC inputs. All put very well on the back or side of the TV. 3D TV, and it can simulate 3D for ANY video, so it isn't just 3D capable, it's 3D ready. In addition it also has the internet aps I briefly spoke about and has all the basic features and inputs you want from a TV. Menu is very easy to use.PICTURE QUALITYOkay, the big category now! Before I begin speaking about this, I ALWAYS let my TVs burn in for 80+ hours of use, and then I have them professionaly calibrated, NOT BY BEST BUY. Best Buy calibration is total garbage - I speak from experience. I pay a seasoned professional who does a fantastic job with all the latest ISF gadgetry. Out of the box, SD picture is decent. It's not as good as say a top CRT, but the SD is comparable to other TVs in this category of Edge Lit LED. It's good, but not fantastic. Some channels look better than others. Out of the box the HD picture is where this set shines. It gives some very deep blacks and showcases a vast array of detail. It's sharp, and there is VERY little motion blur. The CineMotion setting I set to off. Detail is equally impressive in light/dark scenes, and all HD sources look very, very good. I use the Playstation 3 as a Blu Ray player and I play all sorts of console games such as God of War 3, Mass Effect 2 (360), Call of Duty, etc. I also watch a massive amount of blu rays from comedies to action, and the picture never fails. I compared this to a LX9 XBR (Brand new), and I thought the picture quality was VERY similar. I forced the guys at the Sony Style store to move these two sts side by side with the exact same inputs. The XBR 9 only had VERY SLIGHTLY better detail in darker scenes (splitting hairs), but that may have been due to other reasons. Overall, quality is wonderful. Again, motion blur even in dark scenes is not evident. I like to test a certain scene in the game "Resistance 2", to showcase any motion blur, and even when only 120Hz is turned on there is very little or no blur. By testing the Bravia 3 engine, my calibrator found the engine was powerful and moving images where showcased very well. We were suprised, because most of my Sony sets in the past failed during this test. However, I DO NOT like an out of the box picture, personally. It's over bright, the colors are torqued up and are innacurate, and these other features such as "advanced contrast control" or "LED control" are garbage. Turn them off completely. Get this TV calibrated - and even then, it isn't 100% perfect. My calibrator worked hours to get the gray scale as accurate as possible. He came very very close, and the TV calibrated very nicely. We have it on the "Custom setting", which Warm 2 as the color option, and brightness set to 51, Picture to 75, and color to 52. We have ALL SETTING OFF except Live Color set to low. Back light is on 6, because I like it a tiny bit brighter. Sharpness needs to be set to 0, it ruins a picture. If I get enough likes on this review I will post my gray scale calibrations. This all may be true, but the picture is NOT without flaw. Due to being edge lit, you do have a little bit of cloudiness. I have both the 40 inch and the 55 inch model, and it's MUCH lower on the 40 inch. It's only seen slightly at the edges in very dark scenes, but still there. The 55 inch was worse, but still not very evident unless in a dark scene. And even then these sets aren't as bad as others. It's not noticable really on the 40 inch. This however, is the only flaw I see. I am very, very picky when it comes to my TVs and this one delivered. The 3D is very nice - especially on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and also Dispicable Me. I also like Deep Sea 3D, but at a few scenes it gets blurry. Overall I really like 3D and at first was not a believer. I tested the LG LED and the Samsung as well, and the Sony was my favorite. I also LOVE Samsungs because of it's 10 point gray scale adjustability, but this TV had better picture quality.Overall, in this catgeory it gets a 9.5.SOUNDUgh. The sound on these speakers are very tinny. They don't produce bass well at all, and to me are garbage. I use a Samsung 3D receiever with two Pioneer towers up front with a Polk Center channel and Polk rears with a 10 inch 250 watt Polk Sub. I refuse to listen to a TV's speaker, as they sound horrific. I noticed even with HDMI voices tend to sound muffled.Overall, a wonderful set. The only problem is the fact that the backlight at very dark scenes can get annoyingly cloudy, but that's edge lit LED. Picture quality is very detailed, and the gray scale gets 95% accurate when calibrated. Out of the box decent SD settings, but wonerful HD settings. The 3D capabilities on this set are done nicely, and Sony's 3D glasses are among my favorite or comfort. Sound is terrible though - but that was expected.Enough "helpful" buttons pressed, and I'll post my full calibration settings. (Wont look 100% on your set because each TV is different, but will be closer).Happy holidays!

5Excellent 2D HDTV, amazing 3D if you want it.
By Totoro
I've had this set for about a month now and absolutely loving it. If you are in the market for a new HDTV, you should try this set out at your local SonyStyle or B&M electronics store as a future proofed set even in the presence of so many 3D skeptics. If you like gaming, you will be pleased to see HD gaming has been taken to the next level. Just play Motor Storm 3D and you will believe.2D is amazing, and 3D is stunning! I didn't notice ghosting when viewing native 3D content as compared to the Samsung/LG sets (where ghosting was extremely obvious). Although this is an LCD set, the 3D clarity were similar to the Panasonic plasma sets I also tried. I ended up going with this set because the glasses felt better designed.Only negative is the limited native 3D content so far... but things should get better by this winter and early next year. Can't wait for some football on ESPN 3D.UPDATE (11/28/2010): I've had this set for a little over 3 months now and my opinion on it is still the same, better if it was possible to go over 100%.Pros:As stated before, amazing picture quality both in 2D and 3D.It wasn't an important feature for me when I purchased this set, but I am now starting the realize how nice the black levels are on this set. Once you get used to the black levels on this TV, you will notice the mediocre black levels on cheaper or traditional LCD HDTVs and finally see what you've been missing by not getting a Plasma... but this is a LCD (LED) set that has black levels comparable to Plasmas - a must see. Plasmas are absolutely a non option for me because I do a lot of gaming and pause my DVR alot, don't want to deal with burn in problems down the road.Additional positives I discovered about Sony 3DHDTVs in general are the replaceable batteries for the 3D glasses. It will end up costing much less to operate than the Samsung rechargeable types because once the batteries in the Samsung glasses are dead, you have to replace the glasses. Much cheaper to replace the CR2032s ($1.50 - $2.00 each for a good one) than to purchase new glasses.3D Gaming is georgeous on this set. Gran Turismo 5 in 3D mode is a must try for people who like 3D (native 3D mode was hidden deep inside the game options menu - resist the temptation of just pressing the simulated 3D button on your TV's remote if you struggle with finding the 3D option as I did for a few minutes).Cons:3D blu-ray library have definately improved, and next year releases looking good... but still needs time to mature. I still think some the exclusive releases are slowing adaptation of 3D HDTVs, but I could wait - it is nice to see demand for native 3D blu ray on auction sites pressuring some movie studios. You may notice 3D content on DirecTV may flicker a little when compared to native 3D blu rays because the DirecTV signal consist of two channels of 720p or 1080i instead of two channels of 1080p as you would get on a blu-ray or PS3 game. Neither one of these issues are issues with this set specifically, but with 3DHDTVs in general. Native 3D blu-ray and games are amazing on this set.Reflective surface may reflect some direct sunlight. I have a large window with vertical blinds directly across from my entertainment center and behind my couch. During the brightest time of day, a small percentage of those lights can seep through my blinds and be reflected on the glossy finish. It isn't a problem when I'm just watching TV 2D or 3D with regular room lighting or during the day. But when I play GT5 in 3D mode in the middle of the afternoon, it can throw my perception off as I try to focus further down the road. But since I don't get to play in the middle of the afternoon that often, it isn't an issue for me.Integrated speakers are horrible. I didn't expect too much though... this set is designed to be thin for visual aesthetics and so naturally doesn't have the required airspace for the integrated speaker sound to reverberate and amplify itself. Hooked it up to a home theatre system, and problem solved.

5One of the Best Edge Lit LED Panels of 2010
By B. Hayes
In a world of so many options for LED LCD TV's, I can say that this is an excellent choice. I sold my Pioneer Elite plasma due to the flicker, and was looking for a CCFL backlit LCD, but was not impressed with the selection this year (wanted CCFL backlit as I own a Samsung 46B750 LCD from 2009, and the picture is spectacular). You will often see reviews of edge lit LED's state issues with clouding or flashlighting and uneven backlighting. The HX800 has a very uniform backlight with no issues seen with other manufacturers. I would recommend, however, to purchase the panel from somewhere like Amazon with a liberal return policy because you don't want to get stuck with a panel that does have issues. For the price, this is an excellent panel with accurate colors, very good black levels and shadow detail, and excellent motion handling. Before buying this panel I had bought the LG 55LX9500 full array LED local dimming set and was disappointed with the banding and uneven backlighting. Overall, the HX800 is a great panel.

4Very nice TV, good for sports (tennis), relatively cheap
By R. Garcia
I got this TV because it has features that are more commonly found in much more expensive TV's, and the one expert review out there said very good things. In particular I wanted the dimming (non-edge) LED lighting and the ambient room sensor (except I've ended up turning that off, oh well), and I didn't need to pay more to get thinner than 3". Another price note to Amazon: you're being undersold! I paid $998 at Sam's Club, and just saw that it's now being sold by [...] at $899.I'm happy with the image. A review has suggested that it looks bad when viewing it from the side, which is the main reason why we went to see it in person before buying. Like any other LCD it's not as good as a plasma screen--which wouldn't work in our window-filled room--but I don't think it's at all bad.Even better, it's doing well with tennis! We watched the first day of the US Open on someone else's HDTV and noticed that the tennis ball's fast movement across the court looked noticeably jagged. We set this TV up on the second day, and it looks smooth (and that's with the dejugger/smoothing settings set to low).I also like the looks of the TV. One expert review calls them "generic," but I want a TV to fit with my house, not vice versa. The matte screen means it doesn't reflect, which is great for the picture when it is on and for the room as a whole when it is off (less noticeable). Another reviewer noted that the VIZIO name stays orange when it's on standby/off. I find this more annoying in principle than in impact. Still, I'm *almost* tempted to go get some black electrical tape...The setup was easy: it connected to our wireless without problem, programming the remotes was easy, etc. The 5 HDMI connectors are generous. Right now we're using 2 HDMI's (TiVo and computer), the component & RCA (DVD) and the RCA sound out. Someday we'll replace the older components and go to all HDMI/digital sound, I assume. I look forward to the promised software updates that will allow streaming through wireless and/or the USB ports!I haven't tried out the internet widgets (I don't really care), and since we haven't gotten a high-def DVD player yet, I don't know how it does with film's 1080p/24 output. I haven't had any problems with smells.

5Love the Vizio
By Pictorico
I researched in-depth for about two months before making this purchase. And, now that I have received it all I can say is, this it is a great buy. I researched specs and made many in-store visits to compare brands, models, features, etc. After the research I had been considering Samsung and the Vizio, coming down to features for price, bang for the buck. I can tell you that for about half the price of a Samsung in the same category I have the latest features; built-in Wi-fi that works like a charm. many widgets available, though there a a few that I was interested in that are not yet available. The major ones are available like Netflix, Pandora, Amazon, Web Video, Vudu, Twitter and Facebook. As far as picture quality, after spending many hours evaluating many models the Vizio gives the Samsung 6500 series a run for its money and again I state for a lot less money. Super easy setup and it sits elegantly where ever you might place it.Software updated itself automatically over the built-in Wi-fi connection immediately. Easy to navigate controls, good feature set for controls and more than adequate inputs/outputs. The remote with built-in keyboard, a big plus. The one area where I suggest you might want to add is the audio. Though the built-in speakers are adeqaute, it doesn't do justice to the set. I used an old PC sound system and it provided great improvement, giving me everything I want. So I suggest you either purchase a separate sound system or the sound bar from Vizio which I have not personally tried. Highly Recommend.

3Beautiful TV - but smells too bad to keep
By J. Anderson
I bought this TV at Sam's Club over the weekend (yes, it is a XVT423SV, not the old 422 model) and am having the same smell/odor issue another reviewer mentioned. I returned my first one and this new one is about the same. I've had it running for about 20 hours now with the windows open trying to "burn off" the smell. Vizio customer support says that it is some kind of protective laquer that prevents corrosion during shipping, but that it will go away. So far, it has not improved, but I'll give it a couple more days. The picture quality is fantastic, as are the internet apps. The sound is fine - par for similar sets. The remote control is amazing. It connects via Bluetooth, so you don't have to have line-of-site with the TV to use it. It also has IR, so you can use it to control your DVD/Blu-Ray player, Tivo (it controls all but the typing in text via keyboard), etc. There is some heat coming out of the top of the set, but it is a very small amount and not a concern. The smell, though, is overwhelming. If it doesn't subside, I'll sadly have to return it and review my options. I'll update my review when I've made my decision.Update 9/2: I've had the TV on and off for a total of about 50 hours over the past few days. The smell remains, so I've decided to return it. I'd like to think that Sam's Club just got a bad batch, but I'm not willing to try a third set in the hopes that it doesn't smell. It is a shame - the TV is really, really good otherwise.
