5The Nicest TV Right Now
By Corey Fisher
This TV is absolutely stunning. I was actually waiting for the C9000 to come out, but that TV's price is way over the limit. I found out that this TV which is the next step down and actually has the exact same technology as the C9000 minus the touchscreen remote (which can be bought seperately) and the slim profile, not a big deal considering the TV already looks beautiful and is half the price or less then a C9000!In all honesty, I think this TV has one of the nicest pictures I've ever seen. One example is the pin-point dimming, which has garnered a lot of criticsm and skeptisism. I have seen the production TV model live and I must tell you, I think it's better then local-dimming and I'll tell you why... Unless there is a new panel that is made to fix the local-dimming "halo affect", this is currently the only way to get outradgeous contrast levels without that problem. The pin-point dimming on this TV dramatically lowers the dark spots on the screen in certain area's without a halo affect and actually goes completely pitch black when watching movies with dark screens just like a local-dimming TV. I think this TV actually excels at the dimming part over a local-dimming TV because it creates supurb black levels without any halo affects. That's a huge deal for me. Next is the color accuracy of this panel, I think the whites and colors on this TV are probably better then I've ever seen. Sure Plasma's can sometimes have better color temperatures, but they will not pop out of the screen with ambience like this TV shows. This TV is sharp looking and beautiful and it displays wonderful 3D and High-definition like never before.Last, but not least... this tv is LOADED with features, easily making it one of the most feature rich TV's there is on the market. It's completely wireless, has 4-hdmi conenctions, has internet applications and streaming capabilities and best yet, it does it well! I have done a lot of research and have compared this TV with it's newest competitors and this one is it. Don't just take my word for it, go see it for yourselves and you'll just see what I am talking about.

5A Picture that is worth a Thousand Words
By CKE
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R17MOEDP3YNCAC If you have read any of the other reviews you probably have noticed a general theme - the Samsung C8000 has a picture that is unmatched. I know that sounds like hyperbole, but in this case it really is the truth. prior to purchasing I had spent about 6 months going to box stores and staring at various televisions. In all of that time I decided that the Samsung LED's were in class by themselves. At long last I was ready to make the purchase and I decided to order from Amazon.com in fact the price was attractive enough that I went ahead and ordered the Samsung UN46C8000 46" 1080p 3D LED TV, 1080p Resolution, 3D Technology, 3D HyperReal Picture Engine, Touch of Color Design, Kit Includes 2 Pairs of 3D Glasses, BD-C5900 1080p 3D Blu-ray DVD Player, Dig Pro HDMI Cable.Wow.In all of my travels to box stores I never came across a picture that was as good as the C8000. Nothing is even close.A few of my notes- I have never used the television in 3D, and I doubt if I will until sometime next year. To be honest the 3D accessories are too expensive and the available content is too sparse. So why would I buy a 3D television? Well for the price of the Samsung C8000 I am able to get a 3D television for the price of a different mid-range television. However, with the C8000 I get the industry's best picture and the expandability of 3D for a later date. Really how can you lose?- The picture is both bright and crisp. The detail is beyond belief. The best way to describe it is that the picture resembles a professional photo (print) in a high quality frame.- 4 HDMI inputs - Please note that 3D televisions require high-speed HDMI cables. Take my advice and save yourself some $$$ by purchasing AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters) [Supports 3D + Audio Return Channel] - no need to thank me, but you will save major cash.- The internet tv function and Samsung apps are interesting, but far from critical. You may find yourself using them, but you will likely use your Tivo, PS3 or other device to stream you content.- The actual "look" of the television is remarkable. It looks like a giant brushed titanium picture frame. The television is less than 1" (roughly the same thickness as the remote control).- Sound quality - is good, but not to the same quality as the picture. You may want to consider in investing in an audio system.- While it is internet ready, the C8000 is NOT wireless. Seems like an odd oversight.... unless Samsung is just pressing to sell more Samsung WIS09ABGN LinkStick Wireless LAN AdapterFinal Verdict - Everyone who has watched my television has been amazed. I really do think that it is both the value and picture on the market today.5 Stars

5Truely breath taking picture quality
By Mark J. Fritts
Being an electronics buff, I hold a high standard to quality. This Samsung UN46C8000 is amazing. Picture quality is the best I have ever seen. From the quality remote to the stand this television is the set for you. After it was programmed and user preferences were set, the first HD channel was a golf tournament on Golf Channel HD. Truely breath taking!!! My other HD sets are Plasma ranging from 58 to 32 inches. This is the first LED television I have owned. Being one inch thick, weighing in at 55 lbs it was very easy to handle. The picture quality on non 3D broadcast makes it look like a modified 3D. I have never seen anything like it. My wife who could not care the least about technology, was very impressed with the picture quality.Amazon made the purchasing experience painless with no sales tax and inside delivery. The delivery staff unbox your television, plug it in to make sure it works and are friendly to boot. Last but not least, you will be very impressed. I am very impressed with this next generation of quality. Samsung you definitely got this one right!!!!Update:All of the above comments are still true. I have watched my first 3D movie with the glasses and everything worked perfectly. 3D makes movie watching a whole different experience. Only one major problem...Other than the 3D movie that came with the free Samsung glasses, there are no other choices to purchase. 3D Blu-ray technology has not caught up with the 3D televisions. ESPN 3D debuts in June on Directv. The All Star game will be telecast in 3D and the College Football National Championship game will be in 3D. The television had software update available at the Samsung website. It was easy to update. The television was manufactured on March 30, 2010 and the software upgrade was available on April 15. The 3D Blu-ray DVD player also had an update. Not difficult to perform but a little surprised.

5Making a case for LG; amazing tv.
By Is It Dead Yet
LG does'nt get enough praise.Just bought this TV for the sake of it being an IPS panel and for its apparent adjustability (and also 1080p). Plus this tv is so easy to calibrate; the 'picture wizard' is extremely helpful. The amount of menu options is jaw-dropping, as is the style of the set. The LH40 model looks neat with the plastic square along the bottom of the panel, but I like the more minimalist look of the LH30, and I do not like the 120hz or the $100 price jump of the LH40.I made a comparison to my sony 32M4000 (which I have now given to my father) and there are some interesting differences (many are polar opposites):-The sound is far superior on the LG.-Black levels are very close, sony's is a bit deeper and maintains black colors better at angles.-The whiteness of whites is slightly better on the sony, but colors and mid tones definitely have more of a 'punchy' factor on the LG.-Color is amazing; rich and saturated; best ive seen on any LCD, period.-Color does not wash out at all from different angles, only very dark colors and black tend to become discolored (blue or red depending on the angle).-Of course there are far, far fewer picture options on the sony.-My sony has a ghosting problem with dark colors, not so on the LG; motion blur and lag is also reduced too.-OTA HD channels look decent enough, not as sharp as the sony, but the better color makes up for it imo. What was the main factor that made me get this LG?..its S-IPS panel. Samsung is an excellent maker of lcds, but I steered clear of them this time, as buying a tv from them is like playing the lottery. They use 3 different panels with differing levels of color and contrast quality; you are not essentially getting what you pay for: You may get Samsung's own S-PVA panel, the best quality (if you're lucky). An A-MVA panel from Taiwan's AUO (a notch worse than S-PVA). Chinese company Chi Mei's S-MVA panel (worst of the three).Panasonics IPS Alpha panels are decent, but on some panels dark colors appear far too blue from different angles. That narrows it down to LG's S-IPS panel; its color saturation, vividness, and response time are worth the slight sacrifice in contrast and black depth (at least in my opinion). This tv is not perfect, however; I spotted 3 dead pixels right out of the box (2 bright, 1 dark), right around the middle of the screen. They are practically invisible without being a foot from the screen and looking hard for them, however.Viewing angles demonstrate some darkening of the picture, but its not too bothersome (swivel stand helps). No other flaws I can think of at the moment, I recommend this tv!My calibration settings use color adjustments from cnet.com along with some of my own tweaks, try them out!Picture menu:Aspect ratio: Just SizeEnergy Saving: OffPicture Mode: Expert 2Backlight: 60Contrast: 88Brightness: 58H Sharpness: 60V Sharpness: 60Color: 50Tint: 0--Expert control menuDynamic contrast: OffNoise reduction: OffGamma: MediumBlack level: LowReal Cinema: On [grayed out]Color Standard: HD [grayed out]Color Gamut: WideEdge Enhancer: OffxvYCC: Auto [grayed out]OPC: OffExpert Pattern: Off[grayed out]Color Filter: OffWhite balance: MediumMethod: 10 point IREPattern: OuterIRE: [see below]Luminance: 137 (100 Luminance only, 90 through 10 are preset)-- 10 point IRE calibrationIRE: [Red, Green, Blue results, respectively, for each IRE point]100 [-8, 1, -40]90 [-13, -5, -40]80 [-20, -12, -40]70 [-17, -14, -33]60 [-17, -12, -31]50 [-17, -13, -26]40 [-13, -12, -19]30 [-6, -4, -8]20 [-6, -4, -10]10 [2, 3, -1]Color management systemRed color: 2Red tint: 0Green color: -1Green tint: -7Blue color: 2Blue tint: 7Yellow color: 0Yellow tint: 1Cyan color: 0Cyan tint: 0Magenta color: 0Magenta tint: -2

3Okay, but not great
By T. Doyle
I purchased this TV from Amazon supplier Tiger Direct based on Amazon reviews in early November 2009. We have a two year old 32" Samsung HD LCD TV that we were moving to another room and the LG TV was purchased to replace to older TV. My wife and I both found the quality of the picture to be inferior to the Samsung. Moreover, the biggest problem with the LG TV was the deterioration in picture quality with viewing angle. The LG also seemed to have a slight problem keeping audio and video in sync on a few programs, somthing we had not noted in our other TVs (we have four flat panel TVs in all - only one is HD) Given the room we planned to place it in required a wide viewing angle, we returned the TV.

5Excellent Economy HDTV
By Playingpossum
The LG 32LH30 32-Inch 1080p replaced a 720p 32 inch Samsung which I returned because of erratic sound quality. The LG provides a very clear picture for upscaled DVD movies and over the air digital signals. The speakers provide excellent sound for a small living room although the addition of a home theater system would substantially increase movie enjoyment. Standard definition signals also reproduce a stable clear picture. Colors are very good and the set provides sufficient tools to tweak the picture for personal preference. I have not used it for bluray as yet but HD from satellite is very good. The features of this unit described on the Amazon specifications list accurately describe its features and can be relied upon. I am not a hard core cinema/video buff but I cannot imagine that this unit will not satisfy most viewers who want a well priced midsized flat screen high definition TV. My five stars are based upon what I expect in similarly designed and priced units for a smaller room.05/14/2010 I have just connected the LG 32LH30 to a blueray player as well as a WII with Netflex connectivity. They both work well and the LG's bluray images are as sharp and vivid as those on my 40 inch Sony Bravia. I continue to be pleased with my purchase although I must also report the failure of the remote control (just out of warranty). LG customer support referred me to a third party vendor who sold me a replacement for about $17.00. This was my first failure of a remote since they were first introduced way back when.

5Great picture + networking = total winner
By Uluru II
This is my first HDTV, so keep that in mind - I was bound to be wowed by HD, no matter what the TV. But I really like this one. It has excellent specs (high contrast ratio, 2.7ms response time, 120 Hz) and a 'picture wizard' that seemed to do a great job in calibrating the picture settings. It supports the latest HDMI specs, and has some nice features like Real Cinema (which maintains film's 24 frames per second when watching a movie with a compatible source), and also the ability to tweak the settings of TruMotion, LG's image interpolation system.Interpolation is what 'smooths out' video on HDTVs - it actually creates additional frames on the fly to fit between the existing frames of the source, and it's what can give HD material that documentary/soap opera quality. Sometimes that's desirable, but other times it just looks bad and cheesy. This TV has Low, High, and User settings for this feature. I was able to tweak the User setting to a good compromise, that smooths out some of the blur and 'judder' effect of normal video, but doesn't make it look artificial. There are lots of other settings to tweak, for audio (downmix preferences, dynamic range, etc.) and everything else. This brings up the user interface. The menu system on the TV is very user friendly, and graphically attractive. The remote control is one of the best I've used - it has just enough buttons, while being well-laid out and thin and light, and fits nicely in the hand. The 'arrow pad' to move left/right etc. has comfortable buttons and works well (remotes often screw that section up, for some reason, but not this one).My favorite feature has to be the networking/Internet capability of this TV. When I bought this TV (at a store) it came with a free Wi-Fi USB stick, so it was a good deal, but be aware that on its own the wi-fi stick is an unreasonable $70-80, and you can't just use any old USB adapter, it has to be a special LG one - at least it seems to work very well and it's N or G capable. Or, you can also use the TV's wired ethernet port - even a 50' ethernet cable would be cheaper than the wi-fi stick. In either case I think it's well worth the cost to unlock the TV's networking capability. (***EDIT: I have recently seen the LG wi-fi sticks being sold at stores and on Amazon for around $35-45***) Built into the TV are the streaming Netflix interface, VuDu, YouTube access, and more, including Yahoo Widgets - this lets you access your Yahoo account and any associated widgets, like Twitter, weather info, stock feeds, whatever. I only really use Netflix and VuDu in this section, but it allowed me to eliminate my Roku box and remote. When you already have a computer or laptop in the room, the Yahoo Widgets thing seems a little superfluous - this TV is NOT a replacement for a computer with internet by any means, but for some people, being able to quickly check the local weather or movie showings, etc. on the TV could be valuable. The best part about the networking feature is that it will let you stream media from any computer on the network. You just need to install some included Nero software - which, by the way, is actually small, un-bloated and simple, unlike any other Nero product - and voila, your PC is a media server. You designate a folder (or however many you want) to be your media folder, you put videos, music or photos in it, and you can access them on the TV. It really works well and it's very easy to do, literally just a few clicks of the remote. I found that even streaming a 1080p mkv file wirelessly from my PC worked fine and looked fantastic. There are a few caveats - for one, it only supports mp3 for music (why not FLAC, or iTunes format?). It supports a lot of video formats (mkv/mp4,avi, divx, and more), but not all of them, and even for supported formats it may be finicky with specific files. Usually, converting the file to another format will solve the issue and make it playable; this is annoying but it's only happened a few times out of dozens of videos, for me. Occasionally, fast-forwarding or reversing through a video streamed from your PC can be confusing and slow (you backtrack 15 seconds, hit play, and it plays about 2 seconds before where you started). This and the other issue could have everything to do with improper video encoding, and nothing to do with the TV, I don't know. But given that the TV will automatically update its firmware through the network, one might expect these bugs to be gradually worked out. Hopefully, they will even add support for more file formats with future updates; it's just a matter of adding more codecs to the firmware, which seems like it should be easy to achieve. The styling of the TV is subtle and not cheap-looking, unlike some brands (*cough*Vizio*cough*). It's just a clean piano-black border around the picture, with a tasteful LED 'bar' light that stylishly fades from red to blue to indicate power. The stand is easy to assemble (just install some screws) and looks nice while supporting the TV adequately. The screen has a matte surface, so glare, while not totally eliminated, is not an issue. The typical buttons (power, channel, input) are on the right side, out of sight when viewing from the front. This TV has plenty of inputs - 4 HDMI, two component, two old A/V (the red, white and yellow kind), and normal cable input. It also has an optical audio output, which will let you consolidate all sources into one stream. This is great, because I no longer have to switch my AV Receiver between sources - cable, Blu Ray, VHS and Wii all go through the same input on my receiver. There's only one feature I really miss - the ability to control my receiver volume from the TV remote. My old tube TV remote could do this, so why not this new juggernaut? Like all flat TVs, the built-in speakers on this one are adequate but not much more. You'll definitely want a home theater setup, or at least a simple receiver with a pair of speakers, to do the big, beautiful picture justice in the sound department. (BTW, Blu Ray looks stunning on this TV!)I'm really quite delighted with the LG 42LD550. It's one of the few major products/appliances I've owned that met and exceeded my expectations, and I have to dig pretty deeply to criticize it. Even these criticisms are happily brushed aside, given how much I like everything else. My only regret is not splurging on the 46-inch version. :)

5Enjoying TV, nice picture, great features.
By Ferk V
TV is great for the type (LCD) and price. The picture is bright, good contrast, and very smooth. The menu/remote are very comfortable...overall the picture is very nice. Aesthetically, the TV looks great as well...no cheesy features or decorations. This is my first LG product and I'm very pleased with this set. Also added the wireless adapter ($70). The entire setup and interface are very intuitive. This is a kids TV and they had Netflix down in no time (even the 5 year old). My only wish would be a backlit remote control.Only complaint at all is with shipping. It did not ship on time and there was no communication from the shipping company. Ultimately, I had to contact the shipper to make an appointment (was stated that they would contact me). Once I called them, they drove it over the next day (Saturday). All in all, still very pleased.

2You are in for a big surprise
By Frank O.
I bought this TV a few weeks ago after reading many nice reviews about it, and while it's nice, I found its features disappointing. To start with the good part, this TV indeed looks great both on and off: its no-frills design is very elegant and will make it look good in every living room, its picture quality is amazing. I can't really comment on the sound since I don't have good speakers, but I'm not even missing them with the built-in speakers. Its TV-related functionalities and interface is also nice, with zillions of options to set the picture and sound to your liking. However, the selling point of this TV is supposed to be the built-in software for online applications (called Netcast), and Netcast on the 42LD550 is a major letdown. At the time of this review LG doesn't have model-specific information on the Netcast features available, only a generic all-promises page with the fine print "features vary by model and product category". Now, Netcast in principle has at least three different video-on-demand services built-in, as well as internet radio, and many other great features -- but this TV has almost none of these included! (I'm using the latest software version, as it updates itself automatically.)Netflix is included (that's the one extra star), and there is a dumbed-down version of Vudu, which only includes the movie rental features, but nothing else. (For example, there is no Pandora, even though it is included in the "real" Vudu application, it's only left out of the LG version). The rest are useless "apps" and a few selected Yahoo Widgets (all the good ones are missing, the best is probably Weather), Flickr, Picasa, Youtube and Twitter (twitter on a TV??), and that's pretty much it. But there is no Amazon On-demand, no TV On-demand, no internet radios, and I am listing only missing features that are available in some TVs with Netcast or Yahoo Widgets, but are not on this one.Another (minor) quirk is that this "wireless-ready" TV requires an extra USB wi-fi adapter (LG AN-WF100) to actually go wireless. This is also made pretty clear in the specifications; the only problem is that it's not easy to find this adapter anywhere! (At the time I bought the TV it was only available from a third-party vendor through Amazon marketplace, and it wasn't cheap.) So if you want wireless, check first if this adapter is available. At the end I'm not sure why would most buyers get this model. If you just want a sleek TV with great picture and sound, then there's no use paying for the internet-related features, and you can get a better or larger TV for much less money. It's perfect if you are considering buying a great TV with no internet features and a Netflix box - it may or may not save you money, but you get everything in one package, saving you the set-up or cable issues. But you may have cheaper options using a Netflix box, or if you already have a video game console, or by connecting your PC to your TV and using some media center software. If you expect all the bells-and-whistles from your internet-connected TV, then you have to get another model, because this one is really just a beautiful TV with a built-in Netflix box.

5Amazing TV
By B. Porter
I have had this TV for two weeks now. Woohoo, I'm glad I waited!A little background... in October 2010 Amazon had this television at a substantial discount (<$4,000). At that price, I got a tremendous TV. I'm not sure I'd be so inclined to give it 5 stars if I paid substantially more for it. At the end of the day, you can get a 63" Samsung 3D Plasma for <$3,000. You pay a couple bucks more a year in energy costs to run the plasma and have to worry about burn-in in the first 100 hours or so, but you arguably get similar or even better picture quality for less money.More background... I'm inclined toward LCDs and specifically Samsung LCDs. I've always been scared off by potential burn-in issues on Plasmas. I've also tried Sharp and Sony LCDs briefly and never got the same brightness or saturation out of them. I own the Samsung LNT5265F 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV. If you read the reviews of that set, you'll find it is one of the highest rated sets out there. I love mine.So the reason I've taken two weeks to review is that it took me that long to adjust the settings of the new 65" so that I felt they were as good as the LNT5265FX that I have downstairs. For a long time I was worried I wasn't going to be able to match the picture quality I had with that set for richness and naturalness of color. The good news is that I have indeed matched it and this set delivers the same vividness and brightness to match what is arguably the best LCD set Samsung has every made. At the end of the day, it all comes down to picture quality and if I couldn't get it as good as I have it with the 52", I was going to be disappointed. Now the other positives... the set is incredibly thin and the screen is simply huge. I watched Shrek in 3D and found the 3D effects worked great. I found that depending on your settings you may experience some cross-talk, but adjusted properly it was great. In particular, I found the dynamic motion enhancement seems to help 3D. But I haven't experimented enough with adjusting the 3D picture quality to really say definitively. The 2D->3D conversion works impressively well and my Comcast ESPN 3d channel worked great too.I've put it in game mode and the responsiveness seems comparable to a computer monitor (I have a Mac Mini hooked to the TV as well). If you read other online forums, you'll see other folks have had problems with uneven vertical light bands (this set is edge-lit from the top and bottom), flashlighting where portions of the screen burn brighter, warped bevels, and dead pixels. I have one partially dead pixel, but otherwise I've had none of these problems. If I put a very dark gray solid color screen on (easy to do with a computer) I can see some light output inconsistencies, but these disappear entirely for standard content.I also have the camera for on-board skype. Skype app works great and you can receive calls while watching TV. I'll caveat that the one skype session I did the remote party couldn't see me, but I'm not sure the reason. I'm hoping there isn't an incompatible video codec with this particular camera. For the cost though, probably would have made more sense to get a USB camera for the Mac Mini rather than bothering with Skype on the TV, though getting calls while watching is a nice feature.Overall I got what I wanted... a 3D capable 65" set with comparable picture quality to my gold-standard 52" Samsung LCD.Here are the settings I finally settled on for standard broadcast TV (YMMV):Backlight: 15Contrast: 90Brightness: 46Sharpness: 32Color: 46Tint: G44/R56Eco solution: offBlack tone: DarkestDynamic contrast: offGamma: 0Color space: nativeWhite balance: r-offset 24, g-offset 24 (all others 25)Flesh tone: 0Edge enhancement: offLed motion plus: offColor tone: warm2Digital noise filter: lowMpeg noise filter: mediumFilm mode: auto2Auto motion plus: offSmart led: standardHope this helps!

3Did not meet expectations
By Amazon shopper
I've been purchasing LCD televisions for many years. I have an old Sharp LC65D93U that I set up side by side for evaluation purposes. I also have a Panasonic VT25 unit that I used for comparison.A major benefit of LCD over PLASMA has always been the lack of reflections arising from incident lighting. This is my biggest beef with the Samsung, it is no better than PLASMA in this regard. The reflections on this screen are severe. The off angle viewing has improved from older LCD generations, but it is still poor. With a careful eye even at normal viewing distances on the large 65 inch screen, you can see these effects as you sway side to side.Defects:This is my second UN65C8000, the first had extremely bad "flash lighting" effects right out of the box. The replacement had very little. There exists on my set a small amount of spot lighting on the bottom mid-section of the screen which only becomes noticeable when watching in a completely dark room environment (visible in the black bar on the bottom when watching a widescreen movie). A more significant defect is with something I've seen on the biggest screen sizes throughout time, banding. It looks like someone took a dirty rag and swiped it across the screen top to bottom. As the camera pans quickly left-right, it becomes quite noticeable especially with certain color and texture backgrounds. Ignorance can be bliss, many people don't notice this until pointed out and I guess their superior brains just filter the defect out ... wish I weren't so caveman-like. Eventually this defect gets worked out as the technology matures, but I'm not giving Samsung a break on this. The banding I saw is more pronounced than it is on my past generation Sharp LCD. And as usual Plasma's don't seem to have any of this. Some major plusses. In side by side comparisons to a known reference (color filters etc), the Samsung's colors are much closer to true than those on my Sharp. And the contrast is significantly improved (certain shades of grey show on the Samsung were-as the Sharp can't distinguish). The power consumption, which varies a lot depending on the video content and the settings, is around 145 watts for the Samsung, a major decrease over my Sharp which is reading 380 watts for the same content. All the pixels are good, not one out that I could find. Finally, the set weighs very little and is amazingly thin. It's ideal for wall mounting, I suspect the feint spot lighting near the bottom is caused by pressure of the stand mounts on the panel.Thoughts on 3D and other special video processing options:By default, the set is configured for overly bright levels and cool un-natural tones along with a feature called "auto motion plus" enabled. The result is a very fake looking picture that few would want to stick with. To make matters worse, the motion plus setting cannot keep up with the processing demands which causes the video to skip and freeze especially where the video source is hand held and jerky (as in Modern Family). It makes an already jerky picture very distracting to watch. I found that this feature had to be disabled, to me it's like getting a few more horse power in your car but it sputters when you really accelerate ... I'll take smooth power (I thought the electronics were bad when I first got it, but thankfully you can turn this off and get proper video). The set offers cool, normal, warm1 and warm2 color settings. The warm1 option is spot on from my calibrations, though most reviewers seem to prefer warm2 ... warm2 is subdued and over saturated for my tastes. Beyond these are many specific options that can be tweaked but I feel that one config doesn't fit all content sources, and only a few of the options make meaningful improvements. Without a reference of what things should look like, making subtle tweaks is putting too much faith in the highly suggestive easily influenced human perception. The 3D is effective, but I doubt anyone of quality would stand for the glasses and the considerable un-easiness that goes with watching it. 3D is by and large unpleasant though it is a great toy to play with for the time being.Build Quality:I must admit the build quality on this set is poor. Looking closely at the unit, it has very liberal use of thin plastic and no proper restraints for cable harnessing. The HDMI connectors are unfinished and look like they were made by hand, likely to fail if you plug/unplug too many times. On all my other TV's I have never noticed build quality this low (brings to mind expectations of "made in china").The remote control is cute, but somewhat difficult to use due to the lack of button shapes to calibrate where your fingers are. I'm not put off by it because it's not going to get much use with today's content boxes which control the real media. The access to the internet etc is a useless feature for me. Today's content boxes are mostly enabled and I don't think the panel is the place for this stuff to live. The speakers on the unit are fair, suitable for quick TV watching here and there. So, overall I have very mixed feelings on this unit. The many positives are neutralized by the significant sacrifices in screen glare, banding, and minor spot lighting. For less money you can get a plasma-TV free of defects in this size with a better overall viewing experience. I would not recommend this set to a family member.

2Samsung still working out the 3D bugs
By Joe
This is an exceptional 2D set with poor quality 3D capabilities. I purchased a Samsung Blu-ray DVD and the expensive Samsung glasses. The movie they ship with the unit was used as well and the 3D quality just wasn't there. I was sorely disappointed with the blurred 3D image, almost as if you had not activated the glasses. After service replaced the main board as well as the 'T-Con' board multiple times, they determined that the unit 'appears to work as intended' even though they agreed the blurred image was not right. I unfortunately had purchased Samsung's UN55C8000 and their UN40C7000 3D TV's as well. All have the exact same issue. Even more disappointing than the 3D picture quality was Samsung's "Executive Support Team" which determined that "we're sorry, but the unit appears to be working as designed and there's nothing we can do for you."For my money, I'd strongly suggest looking at other brands to determine if anyone has truly nailed 3D yet.

3Glass panel front is VERY reflective
By Bill in Virginia
The great picture and good viewing angles for an LCD/LED were the reasons I bought this for our living room. It did not disappoint with either picture quality or viewing angle. But the EXTREMELY reflective glass panel covering this beautiful TV made it virtually unwatchable even though it was angled away from the main window. The blacks were so black we could watch ourselves watching TV in the dark areas of the picture -- especially while watching movies, which tend to be darker than regular TV. Many of the plasmas I've seen in the stores are less reflective, which makes plasmas viable options if you think you can handle a glass panel. The TV has been returned and we're shopping for less reflective replacement.

5Great TV set with amazing functionality
By RZ
I got mine from a local store on sale for a little under $1600. That was about three weeks ago. And since then my entire family just can't get enough of it.Picture quality is just great - and that's expected. But what amazes me is all the extra functionality with what this TV is packed.1. Video streaming with Netflix. (It also has VUDU, YouTube, Picasa - but I did not try VUDU yet, and YouTube and Picasa work just fine, but I do not need a huge display to view some low resolution videos from YouTube). So Netflix movies available to watch instantly look great. Even those that are not HD quality. I must say that I have FIOS internet connection, so that must be also a component for high quality videos, but as far as this set goes - it does a great job.2. This TV has 2 hi-speed USB2.0 input jacks, and it recognizes not just flash drives, but also USB external hard drives - even with NTFS file format. I tried both - FAT32 and NTFS, and also external drives with additional power source and without it, - this TV recognizes them all. It can play your video files (and other media too) directly from external hard drive! And it supports multiple video formats, including Matroska H.264. It also supports external subtitles for AVI files. I did not test multiple subtitles formats, but SRT works great. It supports standard Latin letters languages and Korean. No other encodings though.I want also to add a few words about design. I use a TV stand that it came with, and it allows TV to be turned both sides about 20 degree - just enough to get to the USB jacks or to additional audio or HDMI jacks that are placed on a left side. The main ones are located on the back panel - which is also pretty easy to reach thanks to that rotating feature of a stand. The rotation is very smooth and requires no force at all.I can't be more pleased with it.

5Everything I'd hoped it would be ... almost.
By L. Sims
Other reviewers have covered the technical stuff, so I'm going to keep it short and sweet.Pros: Outstanding picture quality in all modes, easy to use.Cons: Some screen glare, widgets not very useful.I've been very happy with the various presets and keep it in one of the THX modes most of the time.To give you some perspective, I've been in the video production business my entire career (30+ years)and the picture watching through my HD cable box is crystal clear. I've watched 1 Blu-Ray movie and was very impressed. I've watched football and there were zero artifacts during fast motion. The screen is a large piece of glass so there will be some glare, as is true with any polished surface. There is only slight flashlighting I've noticed when changing inputs but never during any programming, including really dark night scenes from the Blu-Ray.The audio is as good as the 32" standard TV this replaced. There are different modes and settings, but it is not going to sound like a 500 watt system. Keep your expectations realistic. The widgets as of this review include weather, finance, a few games and others ... too many to list but as far as I'm concerned, they don't add much value. There are NetFlix apps like VUDU and YouTube which work very well. These are worth paying some extra. When I hooked up the Internet through an ethernet LAN cable, it automatically checked for updates...pretty cool.Aesthetically, the set is good looking and construction seems solid. All the inputs are located in one place on the back panel ... no front or side inputs. There are cable guides so you can semi-hide the wiring. This works pretty well.In summary, I'm very happy with the picture quality, which is why I got this model. If you don't see any updates to this review, nothing has changed with further use.

5It ROCKS! You need this TV!
By Lloyd Ronick
Like the previous review says, your jaw will drop. The picture on this TV is clear, bright and lifelike, and the images are eye-popping. DVD's are amazing, even in 480P. I'm using the DirecTV HD TiVo as my satellite source, and an over-the-air antenna for local HD channels. DirecTV's HD choices are limited, but the picture on those (compressed) channels is beautiful. But the piece-de-resistance is the non-compressed local HDTV broadcasts. Just amazing. Our local CBS affiliate does their news in HD, and it makes the boring local news riveting just for the picture. Getting strong signals from an antenna can be challenging, but it's worth it if you can do it.The set has more options than you'll ever need, but I particularly like the surround-sound simulation mode that plays a simulated 5.1 image over the set's 2 speakers. It actually creates sounds that seems to come from behind you. Of course, you can hook it up to your home theater for the real thing (over an optical connection).I have noticed no rainbow effects that some say appear on DLP's, and the picture is plenty bright, even in my room that has a wall of windows behind me and skylights above me.In short, if you can afford this TV, you shouldn't hestitate to buy it. Amazon has a great sale on it now (July 2005), so it's even less painful. Besides, amortize it over the 10-15 years you'll enjoy this TV, and it's a bargain.

5Worth Every Penny
By Maestr0
Just got this TV to replace my 60 inch Sony CRT Projection. This Samsung is AWESOME. I am speechless. Once I hooked up the HDTV cable box my jaw dropped. Watching anything HD becomes an experience!TV has plenty of features. However, the one feature I wish it had was to make the TV speakers the stereo's center channel. Being such a thin TV you cannot rest the center channel on top as I did with my CRT Projection. No big deal though. If you can come up with the scratch for a TV like this, you won't be let down!

5The Lag problem is fixed for video gamers
By C. MULCAHY
If your Samsung was produced before june of 2005 - you can play video games such as the X-box but you must use the Component video inputs 1 or 2. This will reduce "lag". You cannot use the S-video or the Composite inputs...if you do you will experience lag.For new TV's that are built after June 2005 Samsung added a video game mode function to the TV that enhances video gameing. These TV's have no issue what so ever. So don't be agraid to buy this TV - it's the best DLP in it's class - perhaps in any class. I compared to Mitsubishi, JVC, and Toshiba. The Samsung won hands down. (I've read there have been many problems w/ the Toshiba projection TV's so be warned)

3Ignore the sound, picture is what matters
By Jason S. Linden
I'm not sure why everyone complains about the sound on televisions. You shouldn't be using TV speakers anyways. They're horrible. I wish they'd just make all TV's without speakers, save us all the trouble. Yes, the speakers on this TV are horrible, but I'd expect that. The picture is solid. The 120Hz works well (on animated movies, live-action movies in 120Hz looks weird on any TV, looks unnatural), images are sharp, brightness is great, however the LED lighting is not uniform, at least on mine. When the screen is on, but black, you can see the un-uniform lighting of the screen. Most of the time, this is not noticeable, but you do notice it during very dark scenes in games and movies. Also, I have seen the problem another review saw, where the backlighting will change brightness. I had to turn a lot of stuff off in the picture settings in order to get it to stop. The User Guide isn't much help with the advanced image controls, so I just had to experiment. The Yahoo! apps are cool, as well as the Netflix app, but these are really just fluff features. While convenient sometimes, the novelty of looking at the weather on your TV wears off quickly. I'd rather have them spend the time on the backlighting issues. In all, it's a solid TV with a good picture except for the issues I noted above. I got it for $800 at Fry's on sale.

4Toshiba LED 42SL417U
By Steve Frost
First of all...the manual included is terrible, for a MUCH better one, go to Toshiba's site...here --Now...I haven't had too many issues w/ this TV and I've had it in our bedroom for about a week now. The speakers are terrible, which was expected, especially on a super-thin LED tv...not a problem since I expected it but you'd think with the amazing sound quality they get out of headphones, that they could do something similar with smaller speakers huh?I have had no issues after turning off the dynamic volume option and the auto dimming sensor option (would dim every time someone walked in front of the tv or if the sun covered up the clouds since it shines through our windows...was very annoying). My games look fantastic on it and movies are great and the streaming is a very nice touch since I have a media server in the house. One issue I noticed was the sound is actually worse on the speakers whenever you're streaming from a media server (as opposed to watching tv or gaming) as I streamed from my Ps3 and the sound from the video was fine even on the tiny speakers, but it was terrible when it was streaming straight to the tv from the media browser. I'm sure that I can remedy this once I hook up some 'real' speakers to it eventually. All in all, it's a great tv..slightly heavier than I expected it to be (think it weighs in at 35lbs?). It's sleek, thin, picture is phenomenal. I have a 46" Samsung LN46A550 in the living room and I notice this one having a much bright picture than my sammy. Overall...I've very satisfied and I got a great deal on it even if it is slightly large for a bedroom setting. ^_^

3Return to Sender - Try Again

I posted this to Toshiba's website today, but I'm posting it here for others to benefit from. Also, I FORGOT ABOUT THE BRIGHTNESS PROBLEM I had encountered when writing the Toshiba review, so I'll add it at the bottom.**************************Just got this set from Amazon about 3 weeks ago after laboriously weeding out others because of size/features. I'm returning it to Amazon today for a replacement. (( Thanks for great service AMAZON! ))I had fairly high expectations for the set, even though I'd seen online reviews that said the sound was lousy. When I first turned the set on, it was confirmed - the SOUND actually WAS LOUSY. What a surprise! The lack of analog RCA audio output jacks is a pain, but technology marches onward! With a purchased stereo adapter, we got our version of 4-ch simultaed stereo/quad.So, we gave the set a run for it's money. Within a couple of weeks, we found that the set randomly CYCLES ITSELF OFF for 15-30 seconds, and then turns itself back on again. (This is NOT a result of accidentally hitting the SLEEP MODE button on the remote control, as one might think.) At other times, several times a day the PICTURE would FREEZE for 15-30 seconds, and then the set would turn itself off and cycle back on, again without touching anything on the remote or the TV. MAGIC! (...or not)(Toshiba tech support documented the off/on cases and attempted to solve the problem, but finally indicated it was probably a power board problem - no at-home solution)Also, during the initial wired LAN setup and for a couple of weeks afterward, the NET TV button on the remote worked fine, bringing up a small whirling circle in the upper right hand corner (while it was "thinking") and then eventually bringing in the NET TV functions. This last week, the NET TV button would not bring up any functions. Even when you would use the remote's MENU button to bring up NET TV, there was no response once NET TV was chosen. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...Testing the network connection showed that the NETWORK CONNECTION WAS GOOD.(Toshiba tech support was NOT CONTACTED about this since the OFF/ON PROBLEM was going to require a return anyway)There was NO OWNER'S MANUAL in the original packaging - there's NONE BEING RETURNED. In the Easy Setup Guide it says to read the owner's manual before using the TV, but that manual was only available to us online, which prevented us from sitting in front of the TV while reading and learning about the features. It was a very large (many paged) manual, and now that this set is being returned, I'm glad that I didn't waste my ink/paper printing the manual up. PLEASE INCLUDE A MANUAL for the $1200 MFGR price tag TOSHIBA. Yes, some people use them. Don't want to print one up, Toshiba, then why not include an ONBOARD MANUAL in the TV's features??? Then, people without computers can learn how to use the set, even if they don't want to use all the NET TV functions. How is anyone supposed to see the manual that's only available online (without printing), unless they have a laptop??? Guess I'll need to get one of those, too...Minor issues, but worthy of looking into:In Netflix mode, if you try to adjust the picture size at all, all picture size modes go black (sound continues) until you exit the movie/program and then re-enter programming where you left off. This may be a Netflix issue, or it may be a TV issue... Not sure. An example would be watching an old TV series like X-Files where the television version was in 4:3, but I'd rather have the full sized theatre mode 1 or 2, thus eliminating the vertical black bars. Trying to adjust pic size, we'd lose the picture completely and have to exit the program, and then return to get the video picture back. With the TV connected directly (wired) to our LAN, and piles of pictures in our MY PICTURES profile, it never seemed to find most of the photos that were in Media Player, and going out of the Media Player on the TV and then coming back in would bring up different folders oftentimes, losing ones that it previously had found. It DID seem to find most of my MP3's, but would only play them one at a time. I MIGHT NOT HAVE FOUND the settings to tell it to play all/shuffle-repeat, but it wasn't immediately obvious how to do that. Might need that owner's manual while sitting there working the problem... It was also NOTORIOUSLY SLOW at bringing up anything on Media Player.Toshiba's biggest mistake on this set:The TV's onboard speakers are PATHETIC, but I had it hooked up to our analog sound system anyway. HOWEVER, EVEN THEN, the AUX (audio) button on the remote could not be linked to the remote's TV mode so that my external amplified sound could be adjusted while the remote was in TV mode. This was just a pain to switch back and forth from TV mode to AUX mode when needing to adjust or mute the TV... The TV speaker sound was always turned down since it sounded terrible. The solution to this would have been a Variable Audio Output on the TV that would allow you to use the TV speakers and an external audio system with one single volume controlling both. In our case, our Brighthouse remote DID allow linking the AUX (audio) volume to the CABLE remote functions on the Brighthouse remote, so we could use the Brighthouse remote to adjust the amplified volume while in CABLE mode, eliminating having to switch that remote to AUX mode just to adjust or mute sound. This is a bit of a pain while in Netflix mode or any TV mode on the Toshiba remote, since you have to switch back/forth to adjust/mute sound since the onboard speakers are terrible.Sorry Toshiba. I'm hoping the replacement doesn't have these same OFF/ON issues, but if it does, I'm returning that one, too, and switching to Samsung for awhile. I can live with lousy sound, since I can always buy a better sound system that uses the optical audio hookup, but still...*************************OK, I forgot to mention to Toshiba that their AUTOVIEW function is also terrible. I believe its' purpose is to adjust picture brightness based on room ambient brightness. In our case, when watching late at night, when ambient room lighting was low, the TV was automatically adjusting itself to its' own screen brightness with no changes in the room lighting. This was a bit disconcerting since the picture would shoot up to FULL BRIGHTNESS and then cycle back downward to normal room brightness. You could see the TV doing this in stages as is wound its' way back down, but then seconds later, it would pop on to FULL BRIGHTNESS again, and cycle back down. Obviously, this is either a defect in the TV or a poorly configured feature that is reacting to itself. My suggestion would have been to have the electric eye (that's monitoring ambient room lighting) at the back of some sort of tube so that it actually reads the lighting 10-15' away from the TV, not immediately in front of the TV. I think that's what's causing the rapid auto-adjustments back/forth. YES, YOU CAN TURN AUTOVIEW OFF, but what's the sense of having a feature that you have to dum down every day or forever? Why bother having the feature if you don't have the technology worked out, yet?BTW, I know everyone wants to know how the picture was (clarity, resolution, etc.) on this TV, and I liked the HD 1080i, but since NONE OF THE CABLE TV PROGRAMMING IS IN 1080p, I never got to see the TV (yet) in FULL 1080p Mode. My son is going to have to drag his gaming machine down to hookup to see how that works. Otherwise, I was happy with the picture, but these other issues seemed to overshadow my initial experience with this set.UPDATE August 21, 2011 - Posted a couple videos to YouTube showing one of the most major problems with this set, after returning the first & second sets, only to get this one with similar problems.[...]
